General Discussion / Tough country
« on: November 09, 2012, 03:58:18 PM »
I read where six Italian scientists were convicted of manslaughter for providing "inaccurate, incomplete and contradictory" information about tremors that led up to a massive earthquake in 2009.

I wonder if meteorologists are insured and bonded for their jobs.

Everything Else TWC / Re: General TWC Discussion
« on: November 04, 2012, 08:51:57 AM »
Just caught the tail-end of an interview with a so-called election expert conducting by Jenn Carfagno on the effects of weather on this election. I could not believe the guy when he said Sandy will favor Obama because he has handled the storm so well. That's contrary to what I've been hearing. Is the TWC becoming a political animal?  Please bring back the good ole days.

Just curious. How much better ratings are TWC getting now with Roker, Abrams and Bettes than a few years ago when they had Seese, Tesch and Mitchell?

Also, does the mornings have the highest viewership?

I think TWC should stay away from airing these types of reports. Just stick with the weather, and not try to become another news agency. I'm beginning to think TWC is forgetting their constituency. Maybe they are wanting to grow their constituency, but they are at risk in losing their loyal constituency over the years.  Just my .02.

OCMs & Personalities / Re: Maria LaRosa hired by TWC

Maria look good yesterday. Is she still considered a fill-in as she doesn't have a regular scheduled?

After watching that video, I'd be very interested to know who the co-worker harassing Nicole was.  It sounded like he/she would have been an OCM.  (This is more of a rhetorical question, since I know it shouldn't be discussed publicly.)

I might not have listened correctly, but I thought she was talking about a previous job when she had a co-worker harrassed her for being away on military duty. She only had good things to say regarding TWC until the buy-out.

OCMs & Personalities / Re: OCM Layoff- Bill Keneely
« on: March 02, 2012, 08:09:14 AM »
Just curious. Was it strictly money at play for the layoffs 2-4 years ago, or were other factors at play. I mean, why Bill Keneely and not Jeff Morrow? They had around the same amount of experience and I always thought Bill was better as a OCM.  Jeff is good, but Bill just better, imo. Then why did Kim Cunningham and Kelly Cass withstood the layoffs when other women OCMs with around the same experience and competency were let go?

It would be interesting to see the same poll with departed OCMs

OCMs & Personalities / OCM Work Schedules
« on: December 16, 2011, 08:52:11 AM »
It appears as if only around half of the OCMs have regular schedules. I realize the need for fill-ins but with the decrease in time of needed on-air OCMs, does TWC need as many OCMs as they have listed?

Another thought is that maybe TWC website schedule is not correct. The Schedule has OCMs either working a 5-day shift or a weekend shift, nothing in between.

I know a few, but that's about all. Where are Rick Griffen and Will Annen working? Some others I can think of are Sharon Resultan, Dave Swartz, Hillary Andrews, Melissa Barrington. Now we have Nicole Mitchell, Bill Keneely and Alexandra Steele. Are these people still in the industry?

TWC is taking Nicole's FB page off their site. They said they appreciated her work and wished her the best.  A RW is credited for the notice. Who is RW?

Thanks, and it does help though it is still somewhat beyond me.

What do the forecasters in the Seattle or Anchorage areas look for in making their forecasts. It is harder for them than the east coast forecasters? Maybe those Alberta clippers make it difficult to forecast in the winters.

One last simplistic item. How do the Farmer's Almanac people seem so accurate? I'm sure they do not use meteorology science in their predictions.

It's strange that in most businesses they will ask the departing employee to clean out their desk and leave immediately, even though still paying them. TWC must trust their OCM by letting them go on the air after their 'letting-go'.  i

Just saw on Facebook where Nicole Mitchell is starting her own fan page. That may prove interesting.

General Weather Chat / In need of Weather Systems 101

Where do weather systems in various parts of the world originate? My understanding is that in the USA weather comes from the west to the east, except for hurricanes. Why does it do that and do those systems ever make it to Europe? Where would Europe weather originate? Asia, the Middle East, southern hemisphere Africa and South America?
