Local Forecast / Re: IntelliSTAR units to be retired this October...???
« on: October 23, 2015, 04:10:46 PM »
Looks like we finally have an IS2 here in Hanover. Unlike last time they tried to replace our IS1 with a unit from 40 miles away in Lancaster, this one is actually localized for Hanover.

Fall is here. The days of warm weather here in the Mid-Atlantic Piedmont are gone. We've seen high temperatures in the low 70s with mostly cloudy weather the last few days. I know it's getting cold when I drive around with my windows down and I feel the chill in the air in the middle of the afternoon.

Weather: I like 1Weather. It has a relatively clean interface and a decent feature set; it's not bloated like some other weather apps out there. If you want something really simplistic, I like Eye In Sky.

Optimizer/cleaner apps: I don't bother with them. Like with Windows, I find that they're pretty pointless. If you're concerned about memory use, either uninstall/disable apps that you're not going to use, or go through the apps that you actually do use, and disable push notifications. It's best to manually micromanage, IMO.

WeatherSTAR Tech Support / Re: Weatherscan City/Unit Changed?
« on: August 03, 2015, 06:26:19 PM »
Sorry about reviving a really old thread, but this problem has happened again (as on August 3, 2015). The Harrisburg Weatherscan unit is back in service in the Hanover, PA area on Comcast/Xfinity. It appears that the configuration of the Harrisburg unit has not changed in the last eight months, either, and does not include Hanover in it's forecasts.

The IS2 from Lancaster that I had gotten a few weeks ago has been replaced by our (I think) original IS unit.

Comcast in Hanover, PA is now showing an IntelliStar 2 on their SD feed (channel 53) instead of the trusty old IntelliStar unit (22608) that we've had for over ten years. The current IntelliStar 2 that I'm seeing is based out of Lancaster, PA, whereas the former IS unit was centered on Hanover itself. Lancaster is 40 miles away from Hanover, and the weather can often vary greatly over that distance.

This IS2 unit also appears to cover a very widespread area; my estimate is around 2,750 square miles. The cities on the LDL are Lancaster, Lebanon (21 miles away from Lancaster), York (23 miles away from Lancaster), and Hanover (40 miles away from Lancaster).

It seems like 40 miles from the main current conditions site is a very far distance and may be an error. Are  there any closer IntelliStar 2 units that would better serve the effected area in a more efficient fashion?

Thank you.

Local Forecast / Re: How does Local on the 8s Work at TWC?
« on: March 27, 2015, 02:56:55 AM »
Vizrt has been providing the graphics for the SD satellite LF since May 2011 and the HD satellite LF since September 2007. I doubt an actual STAR unit is in use for the satellite LF; it's probably an internal computer system with a custom Vizrt installation that is powering these graphics. If I had to take an educated guess, since November 2013 it's probably one system that powers both the satellite LF and the national feed LDL. It's not like the old days when you'd have a custom Weather STAR 4000 running the Travel Cities scroll.

As for when and how the current generation of the satellite LF is cued, it's very likely all automated, unlike the old WPS satellite LF days, when it appears that the satellite LF actually had to be manually cued. Back then, you'd see a relative amount of variation, maybe even a few second gap before the satellite LF would actually fade in. Now, it's a seamless transition from the Local On The 8s intro into the headlines section of the Satellite LF.

Programming and Graphics / Re: New Live Show hosted by Mike Bettes
« on: March 27, 2015, 02:13:37 AM »
Wasn't this supposed to debut in March? I did some poking around and I wasn't able to find any information on this new show besides that press release from January. From what I've seen on Mike's Twitter and FB, it seems like he has been handling midday expert desk duties for a couple of weeks. I wonder when they're going to shift him to evenings (Carl Parker is usually in The Lab during that time.) Since Kim is the current evening co-anchor and she is leaving in early April, maybe Mike's show will start then.

It might be delayed? i'm thinking if so it will debut in April or May.

There are still five days left in March... Anything could happen! It could happen tomorrow...! or Monday...

IIRC, you can buy a $30/month card that has, 1500 minuets and unlimited text.  Straight talk.
Correct. Just a note to keep in mind, this plan is not available on smartphones. It only works on basic/flip/quick message phones.

I submitted the issue to the tech support form at weather.com, and they are "aware of this issue and are working to resolve it."
