General Discussion / Re: Charles Abel-Lear 1980-2019

As I said on Taiganet, this is quite the shock to logon and read this. We chatted somewhat frequently on instant messenger from about 2004 until around 2009. He recommended me for the WS4000 Simulator project when he decided to step away. For various reasons we had lost touch since then. His professional and weather related contributions will be greatly missed.

I don't remember it from the time. First time I saw it was a few years ago while transferring some tapes to dvd.

In case you haven't found it yet, it's "Dreaming At The Wheel" by Sam Cardon. https://samcardon.bandcamp.com/album/serious-leisure  WeatherNation might of also used "Wishing Well" in the last year.

They've also used a few songs from his "Impulse" cd. https://samcardon.bandcamp.com/album/impulse  "Emerald Mist", "Air Pudding" and "Peace of Mind".

These songs were identified through Shazam from a Warner/Chappell Production Music cd called "Corporate Vol. 1" and "Smooth Jazz Vol. 1", but with the songs listed under different names. I've found some other songs in their library if anyone is interested.

OCMs & Personalities / Re: Where is Jen Delgado?

The only thing I see is pictures of her left foot in a soft cast after a surgery in early January. At that time she said "six more weeks to go". https://twitter.com/jendelgadotv/status/817099562041151488

There doesn't seem to be any updates, unless I missed something.

Local Forecast / Re: What errors have you seen on WS3000 or WS4000?
« on: January 03, 2017, 07:55:06 PM »
Not really a TWC "error", but my cable company (Warner Cable Communications) did not configure the local audio correctly for the 4000. For the first year or so (in 1992), the 3000's audio feed was used:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSABArvQDXk

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nY6272wSENk

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGkmlT6UhMc

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1HY3ENIsm8

Even after fixing this issue, the 3000's audio would still be heard during full screen brown/red scrolls and if the upper display area was not loaded.

Every once in a while, the wrong cable company name and ID number would appear during the station identification videos, but the local conditions and forecast information would still be for this area.

This is so sad, I was hoping he'd beat it again this time. He was one of my "must see" OCMs going back to his early days with the network. Something that set him apart was he would sometimes use props to help tell the weather story. I would often see him doing the late night hours during the summer when I was out of school back in the 1990s.

When I need to find the date of a piece of tape, it usually involves some combination of the calendar, radar and/or satellite images or surface maps.

Calendar only works if there is a day of the week and month/day somewhere on screen http://www.timeanddate.com/calendar/?year=1996&country=1

National radar mosaic images (at 5 min intervals back to 1/1/95) http://gis.ncdc.noaa.gov/map/viewer/#app=cdo=cdo&cfg=radar&theme=radar&display=nexrad

Satellite images (back to the 70s) http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/gibbs/

Daily weather maps (back to the 1870s) http://www.lib.noaa.gov/collections/imgdocmaps/daily_weather_maps.html

www.wunderground.com has an archive of surface observations for most stations going back many years. I've used this to match temperatures (or other information) being shown on maps if there wasn't any of the above on screen or if the above didn't provide a perfect match.

Sometimes you have to just listen to what's being said if there isn't definitive visual clues as to the year or time of year.

Glad you found and posted this video! Nice to see some footage after that tornado outbreak and the locals from OKC.

In 1982 TWC's logo looked like this:

If I were DirecTV, I'd look over that contract that was signed with TWC back in April. There was much talk about TWC reducing non-live programming at that time. Seven months later, they are actually showing more non-live programming than ever before.

As of Noon today I think "Fat Guys In The Woods" is on, so it appears the 12-2 pm block has been cut. So that's a total of six hours (4-5 AM, 12-2 PM Sat/Sun) that have been removed.

The way things are going, it would not surprise me if they cut more of the weekday afternoon/evening hours sometime in the future. So TWC becomes a morning show with 60 second (or whatever) live cut-ins twice an hour the rest of the day.

September 25, 1994 IIRC. Part of my copy is black and white because of my goofy VCR.
