General Discussion / Weatherscan in Canada? Soon a reality.
« on: January 10, 2012, 12:26:45 AM »
Hello again folks!

For those who didn't catch the "I'm back" thread, hello again! I've truly missed hanging out around here, but as time progresses old habits sadly get lost, but let me remind everyone that my time spent here was quite enjoyable and the inspiration for my ongoing project would have never been possible had it not have been for this forum!

On that note, a lot of you know I've spent my time over the years trying to create a version of Weatherscan, but for broadcast in Canada. Who knew launching a television station independently could take so much work!

A lot of progress has been made over the past year, I'm at the point now where I'm in discussions with Rogers (Canadian version of Comcast) as to what the best 'launch plan' is for this service. In the coming months Rogers will be broadcasting my product "Weathercaster" during the evening, overnight and morning hours on a few different channels, this will allow us to get feedback and better prepare me for the full launch shortly down the road from that.

However, the most important feedback for me is what everyone here has to say. So many people have such creative mock ups, My inspiration for the project came from here, it seems only right to ask for everyone's feedback here.

So what does everyone thing? What should change? What do you like? What would you do differently? Let me know, I'll be taking all comments into consideration. I'd hate to launch a product that true weather channel lovers wouldn't approve.

Hope everyone is doing well!

General Discussion / It's been so long...
« on: November 14, 2011, 07:57:05 PM »
Hello folks,

Man - it's been a while since I've been here! I've been wanting to come and say hi for so long -- but time gets the better half of me lately.

I have no idea who's still active on here - I still keep in touch with some of you outside of the forums - but I just thought I'd come on and say hello, let everyone know I miss coming to these boards on a daily basis. I often reflect on my time spent around these boards, a lot of great people talking about a great passion.

A few of you know about my plans to start a Canadian version of Weatherscan, it's been a project in the works for over 5 years and I'm glad to say that things are looking promising for a launch sometime early next year. Spending time on this board has helped in ways never thought possible. There's the aspect that developers see, but it's awesome to hear what the actual viewers want to see; this has allowed me to create the best viewer experience possible.

I'll update everyone on the status of this, but thought I'd stop in and say hello to the forum that made my day for so long. Hope everyone is doing well.

Also - I've actually got a survey on the go right now - basically asking what your thoughts are on weather focused television channels - if anyone wants to take a few seconds to answer the 5 questions - I'd appreciate it!

I hope to be around here a bit more often!

General Discussion / Packing up camp, and heading back to the US...
« on: August 14, 2009, 12:20:20 PM »
Hey everyone,

Sorry I haven't been very active on the boards lately.. I've been sorting through some fun life adventures, and been on the road quite a bit, and whatnot.

I was laid off from the station I had been at for about 5 years in June, and have been seeking jobs in Canada ever since. I've been doing a lot of freelance work with various stations, but nothing permanent. Things have become such a mess in Canada with not only my career, but also the industry itself that I have decided to pack up camp here in Ottawa, and make my way back to the US.

I've been in talks with several stations such as possibly returning to TWC as a Local Weather Producer, I'm also looking into WFAA, News 8 - Dallas Texas, FOX Atlanta, a few stations in Kansas (can you say tornado!) and possibly even somewhere in Florida, you know, for the Hurricanes and whatnot.

What do you guys think? Where should I go? I'm looking for a station that is well known for its severe weather coverage, and I swear, if you say TWC! But seriously, what's in your neighborhood? What do you recommend?

Of course, wherever I go you know I'll extensively blog and Tweet about whats going on.

We built a new set today... What do you guys think?

I streamed the final bits of setup on uStream tonight from the studio cameras, but I think we only had about 3 viewers as I decided to stream it very last minute, for only about 30 minutes.

Everything Else TWC / Abrams & Bettes BlackBerry Theme
« on: March 20, 2009, 08:32:30 PM »
I got really bored last night and decided to make a A&B style theme for my BlackBerry Curve 8330. The BlackBerry had been off for a day or so, so when I turned it on a few messages came in, which is perfect, shows what my home screen looks like with messages that are unread.

This is the first theme that I actually like on my BlackBerry, all the other look like crap, this looks AMAZING on the little high res screen.

What do you think?

I also have the full A&B music as my ringtone, and smaller cuts as my SMS / MMS / Messenger alerts.

General Discussion / Weathercaster by KSMI
« on: January 03, 2009, 05:01:07 PM »
Hey Folks.. After a few months of complete darkness I've re-wired everything for transmit, all audio has been re-done, as well as some of the video equipment. There were quite a few issues with audio getting from the mixer through the digital / analog conversion, but all issues should be fixed.

Right now, I am streaming the live feed from master. I have the multi-viewer on air right now, but this is just for testing purposes. When actual broadcasting starts, the stream will only display what is in the "PROGRAM / TRANS O/P" box.

Let me know how the quality is... How is the video? How is the audio?
For those of you wondering, the clip is of A&B on August 14th, at 7:00 PM

Should I be using uStream, or Windows Media Encoder? Comments and suggestions welcome!

General Discussion / The Weather Network - MobiTV - TELUS
« on: January 01, 2009, 02:11:34 PM »
This past week, TELUS finally released the MobiTV application, and XM Satellite Radio application for their series of Blackberry’s.

Already paying $150 a month on my BlackBerry bill, I thought I should add both applications to my BlackBerry Curve and give them a shot.

I shot a video of how the application loads, and selected to use The Weather Network as my demo channel. Similar to the satellite feed, this is not a local PMX version, it is a national version. People with TELUS get the same feed. However, there is NO PMX what so ever. The locals, highway, and national segments are all blank with no overlay.

Here is a sample of a LF and a bit of the newscast:

Most channels are only 15 seconds delayed. The quality is pretty good, it is streaming over the phone's EVDO network afterall. There is very little buffering. If you have any questions, lemme know!

Here is what the guide looks like:

Notice how the schedule has TWC names? TWN doesnt even have programs, in Canada, on our guide we see "National, and Local Weather" in our guides for TWN, that never changes. It seems maybe MobiTV got TWN and TWC mixed up..

General Discussion / Information about copied YouTube Videos...
« on: September 30, 2008, 11:53:21 PM »
I am tired as I can only assume Gary and Stephen are as well of new threads about YouTube Videos being stolen..

Now, there is a shread of respect I do have for people who did take time and effort to make a video, regardless of whos property it is (eg making a TWC emulator in powerpoint / fancy editor that took you 2 days).

If you uploaded a peice of work that is yours, meaning you uploaded it to YouTube and someone copied it, you are encouraged to use this tool to report it: http://www.youtube.com/copyright_complaint_form

I contacted YouTube this morning about a particular user and asked what I could do as a YouTube user if my videos were copied off my account and posted on another account (I also threatned to log in under my work account and do some deleting, thats problaly what sparked the quick responce ;) ) but I was still curious as to what a normal user could do. The answer is above.

Of course, YouTube will check your account for the matching video, see the upload date, compare the two, etc, etc... Hope this helps.
