General Discussion / Taiganet No More?
« on: July 21, 2022, 02:06:58 PM »
I'm posting as somewhat of a question but also as a statement in case anyone has extra information to share.  I've been using the WS4000 emulator as part of my weather stream for quite some time.  Recently, I noticed it kept displaying 'No Current Report' and not displaying current information.  As I looked into the problem, I noticed taiganet.com is no longer available.  I am able to view it in web searches but the site and forum do not load.  I don't want to speculate, so here's the post to gather information!  Also, thanks to Bill for programming the emulator and maintaining a quality product.

Help and Support / Incorrect Temps, No Updates
« on: July 26, 2020, 09:07:54 PM »
I've noticed that conditions are not updating normally over the past few days. I'm getting conditions hours old, if not longer. I've restarted the emulator and computer with no change. I'm still seeing issues with the sunrise and sunset times displayed and how the app handles the night/day transition with conditions. It looks like the forecasts are still updating properly and I'm connected to the net.

Bug Reports / Almanac Time Error
« on: May 28, 2019, 05:22:01 AM »
I have noticed my almanac data is incorrect by 3 hours or so.  For instance, today's sunrise official time is 5:56 AM but the emulator is showing 3:30 AM.  Sunset is 9:25 PM and the emulator is showing 7:00 PM.  Is this a program issue where it's grabbing the wrong timezone?  Just curious since it's causing issues with the entire emulator showing the wrong icons for the time of day, along with the wrong sunrise and sunset times.  Attached are screenshots from the WSXL emulator and the WS4000 emulator for comparison.  Thanks!

General Emulator Discussion / Almanac Sunrise/Sunset Times
« on: April 23, 2019, 12:18:07 AM »
I recently dusted off the emulator and fell back into how much I used to enjoy having it running.  I was curious if any more development had been made since the redesign?  I'm thankful it's still around!  My emulator currently has an issue of grabbing the wrong sunrise/sunset times.  Is there a possible fix for that?  I'm also wondering about the possibility of additional packages to select, possible customization of the alert scroll visual style and the ability to send a test crawl for each product.  I've been streaming again now and then, so check it out!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d91o3r79ddI

IS2/HD Star #28785

Hello STAR Team,

Our IS2 hasn't been airing any local content since the time-change on Sunday morning.  None of the LOT8s, ad slates, cable provider logos or LDL.  I waited a couple days to see if it would come back but alas it hasn't returned.  Please let me know if I can be of any other assistance.  Thank you!

WeatherSTAR Tech Support / #99910 Radar Not Working

  Hey STAR Team!

Here's another error for you.  None of the radars are showing up.  The   bug radar during the local on the 8s, local radar, regional   satellite/radar, metro radar is not working.  The city, county and   highway layers show up along with the blank single-color basemap, but no   topography and no imagery on any of the maps.  See attached images,   please!  It started with the bug radar during the local on the 8s a   couple days ago and spread to the others.  Also, not sure if this helps,   but occasionally some of the radars would only show one frame of radar   data while it was on the screen, and not necessarily the newest scan   either.

I hope you are able to view the images, the attachment method wasn't working.

Update: As of tonight (now Nov 29, 1:00a CST), the radars are still not showing up as illustrated above.  Thanks for looking into this and let me know if there's any further info I can provide.   :)

WeatherSTAR Tech Support / #99910 Flipbook Error/Mixup

Hey STAR Team!

With help from a few others, I noticed this on the IS2.  The flipbooks for Cloudy and Mostly Cloudy are backwards, i.e. when it's Mostly Cloudy the 'Cloudy' flipbook is shown while when it's Cloudy, the 'Mostly Cloudy' flipbook is shown.  I can confirm that this is in the Local on the 8s on the left side of the screen for current/tonight/tomorrow as well as the current conditions scrolling through the LDL.  I believe it is only happening in the evening hours when the moon flipbooks are cued versus the sun ones.  Keep up the great work!

Here is a video to show the error:

WeatherSTAR Tech Support / IS2 #99910 Color Table Key Bug?
« on: November 10, 2010, 03:06:59 AM »
Hey STAR Team!

IS2 ID #99910
Grand Forks, ND
Midcontinent Communications

With help from Aaron (socool775), we caught a potential error.  The regional satellite/radar composite only shows the radar color table key under the image even when mixed precip/snow is showing up on the map, possibly confusing some viewers.  Please refer to below.  At :30, for the local radar, you can see it shows the rain/snow/mix color table key.  However, at :35 it only shows the rain color table key (even with the snow/mix showing up on the ND/MT border).  Thanks for checking into it!

WeatherSTAR Tech Support / #99910 IS2 Incorrect Label
« on: October 30, 2010, 02:09:32 AM »
Hi, Star Team!  Good work with the IS2.  I noticed on my local box (#99910, Grand Forks, ND, Midcontinent Communications) that the regional Doppler displays (should be) I94 across south-central North Dakota.  Instead, it shows up as I90 on the label (which is in South Dakota).  Also, "Grand Forks" in the top left (above current/tonight/tomorrow temp) is slightly cutoff on the top by the edge of the safe title.  Right now, that appears to be the only thing that is incorrect on my unit.  I'll be sure to keep my eyes peeled.

One small suggestion that caught my eye: Would it be possible to put a ° between the forecast high/low temp and the 'F' in the 48hr local forecast?  Right now it's listed as"38F" and it looks kinda funky to me.

Thanks and keep up the great work!!

Bug Reports / Emulator's Satellite & Radar Error
« on: March 11, 2010, 12:28:46 AM »
I noticed that in the past two days, the satellite and radar imagery have been acting weird.  It appears that not all of the overlay was allowed to load, therefore has boxes of "missing" imagery.  Any thoughts?  Note the images:

Also, in reference to this thread, many conditions are still triggering the N/A icon instead of the appropriate one, i.e. flurries, drizzle, mist, etc.  Just thought I'd mention it!

General Emulator Discussion / Emulator Additions
« on: September 04, 2009, 09:39:49 AM »
I noticed that there was solicitation for things to potentially add to the emulator.  I'd like to mention a couple to hopefully get the ideas flowing.

(Changes/Updates)
I checked my sunrise/sunset data and the times were, in fact, incorrect in the emulator, along with the moon phases/dates (which I know must be entered manually (which my first post refers to).  The emulator says 5:55AM-5:29PM when the actual is 7:51AM-7:27PM (according to NWS).  Is there a way to make it more automated to grab the times automatically?  The moon phase dates are off as well.

The icons don't show up for blowing snow (icon 15), heavy snow (icon 42).  I also noticed it had N/A for light rain/mist (icon 9) & fog, N/A for smoke (icon 19 or 22) and it was showing N/A for snow (icon 16).  I think it wasn't grabbing the snow with wind icon, either, for when it's windy (icon 43), light snow (icon 14) and flurries (icon 13).  When the conditions said 'flurries' the icon was showing up N/A.

Now, I know that there is the potential for a bulletins page for watches/warnings/advisories, but is there currently, or could there easily be, a page that is inserted between each of the standard pages (local conditions, aviation, etc.) when there is an alert issued for the local area or that of which you choose?  Perhaps there could be an option to either show a map of the area with the current alerts or show the bulletins page with the text of what is happening from the NWS.  Maybe both?  Just throwing it out there.

Addition - Is there any interest for storm reports?  That may be an option to show (when they are submitted for the area, a screen with text is inserted once through the rotation).

Also, it's purely semantics but I was wondering, is it possible to add a space between the wind direction and wind speed, i.e. W15 to W 15 (on both the current conditions and regional observations)?

Addition - I was also wondering/hoping if/that the program would also remove or overwrite the images that are not being used and are old.  Is this in the program?  If not, could it be easily added?

I have noticed that the seasonal page has been stuck on the fall outdoors page since I started using the emulator.  Perhaps an update so the seasonal page changes to whichever season we are currently in.

Addition - LDL.  Pure awesomeness.  I'd love to see it in the program.

Addition - Ability to choose more locations for currents/forecast/5-day.  For me, there are no 5-day forecasts anywhere near my tri-state location so I have it set to Las Vegas to allow for a proper build.

Addition - More screens to choose from.  Pollen/allergy index?  Severe risk day 1 (when there is something to show), visible satellite (during the day), watch/warning/advisory map (when there's something to show).

Addition - Ability to change "versions" as mentioned here

Attached are some new moons I made for the almanac page.  Feel free to use 'em  :)

Addition - Regional currents (map), forecast (map)

Addition - More themes (I have two ready to go, hopefully more on the way)

That's all I can think of right now but I'm sure more will come to me after I post it.  I hope these are feasible.  Thanks for the great work!

I'm not sure if you guys are aware of this or not but I thought I would share it.  Sometimes, the NWS makes their forecast ridiculously long and it gets cutoff at the bottom.  (See Image)

I'm not sure if there is a way to make the forecast shorter or making that last line show up or not show up, etc.  I figured you guys would have a good idea of what to do.  Thanks!
