Local Forecast / YouTube Clips
« on: July 22, 2021, 09:35:20 PM »
Hey Guys,
1st you have to know that I am sincerely honored and grateful that folks have enjoyed my music on The Weather Channel but, please understand Songwriters get paid less than a penny for YouTube streams and I’m not get paid at all.

You see, YouTube AI doesn't recognize my music that's being used in the videos that have been posted over the years as YouTube clips from the Weather Channel broadcasts, because my song title isn't included in that person's video clip title. Most are including my information only as a part of their description underneath the video clip from The Weather Channel (thank you for that) but, they did not include it as a part of the title on YouTube...so YouTube doesn't pick it up.

Actually need a way to ask everyone with my music in their clips to please, please edit their video attributions. Don’t want them to take them down because then I won’t be paid for the number of plays they have accumulated to date.  Just need the titles edited.

Will you please ask any folks whom you may know who have vid clips from The Weather Channel which happen to use my music to PLEASE edit your YouTube titles to include my name and song title too?

Can you think of a way to get this request out to others?

Thank you again for all your support,
~Jeanne Ricks

« on: April 20, 2016, 03:03:27 PM »
Hey Guys,
Spoke with Brian Picard and was told that YES ~ Smooth Jazz has returned and is being used at least one day a week ~ SO FAR!

Thank you so much for your support in this effort!  You guys, I'm certain, have been a big part of their decision. :club:

Now please reach out to them and let them know how happy you are about their very wise decision.  Hopefully, the public response will be high and they will add a few more days fo Smooth Jazz airplay.

The guy doing the programming is Jeremy.Jones@weathergroup.com  I just emailed him and asked if he might allow me to submit some music for this new roll-out. Hoping he'll agree.

Thank you again for all of your support!

Local Forecast / RIP ~ Real Music
« on: December 04, 2013, 12:48:54 PM »
Hey Guys,
You have probably noticed that the local is currently using only two pieces of canned, branded music from some catalog.  Not good.

There's a guy named Jeremy Jones at the Weather Channel in Atlanta who has been put in charge of content.  I sent him an email and left a VM regarding the music situation.

I'd welcome your support.  I'd like to be assigned as their in-house music coordinator (which includes music discovery, acquiring overall licensing deals for labels, artists, publishers and artist representation) or at the very least compose new music for them.   The goal is  to develop and curate their Weather Channel -sound and brand- for all productions (regular programming: pilots, series, specials and promotions, etc. , the whole enchilada).

My degree in Film Scoring from Berklee College of Music, the variety of music that I've scored for several films including 'Assassination Tango',  combined with all of the music that I've written for them in the past ~ should be enough of a background to easily qualify to write ANY style of music that they need, not just 'Smooth Jazz'!

I want to encourage them not to take the easy way out and just use a third party music service but, instead have a steady flow of original music written specifically for their audience.

     Anybody with me?

TWC Artist Chat / Song Titles
« on: July 04, 2011, 01:14:23 PM »
Hey Guys,
I've begun three new compositions for the 8's but, have no really good song titles for them.  Do you guys have any great suggestions?!

And whatever happened to the 'Blowin' in the Wind' video a couple of you said you might create after I posted the song??? :dunno:

All the best,
-JR

P.S. - As I mentioned, I'm in the composition process - so no it is not possible to hear them now and it's really the other way around - I need to fit the title to the piece.  But that's ok - I just thought you guys might have some creative title ideas.  You're creative in so many other ways.  I'll plug along on my own and figure out what to name the pieces as they gel more.

TWC Today News / Holiday Music
« on: December 14, 2010, 04:25:06 PM »
Hi Guys!

The folks at The Weather Channel asked me for some new Holiday music.  We've hit some administrative issues with BMI clearance which I've been assured will be finalized today.  But in the meantime I wanted to share the  music with you.  You can download the music for free here!
http://www.ricksofactomusic.com/music.html

Again, it should begin airing later this week.

Happy Holidays,

-JR

Contributions / Proposition re: Music Video
« on: May 24, 2010, 05:30:30 PM »
Hey guys!

Was wondering if anyone would be interested in putting together a video to go with a new arrangement that I composed for an old Bob Dylan song entitled 'Blowing in the Wind'.  The video would need to convey something along the lines of the imagery used in his lyric...something to leave people thinking.
Whadaya think?!

P.S.  I tried uploading the sound file here but, it wasn't accepted.  So if there's interest you can find it here:

TWC Artist Chat / U Guys Probably Already Heard but......
« on: July 21, 2009, 02:05:19 PM »
U Guys R always so 'up' on things but, just thought I'd put in a word on TWC's latest venture - digital music distribution starting mid-August.  They sent me a note "Because your music is an integral part of "Local on the 8s" programming, IMI Music would like to distribute it via TheWeatherChannelMusic.com, which will launch mid-August. We look forward to working with you in maximizing your sales.'
So music will be available on their website for purchase (on a song by song basis), which is, I believe what you've been clamoring for.  Of course, I'll need an attorney to review the terms of the agreement they've offered - to know whether or not I can participate without it hindering other sales efforts or deals which may come-up.
And this is a curious development considering their decision to remove 'Smooth Jazz' from the channel itself - I dunno - it's odd - but, it should make U guys happy at least.
All the best,
-JR

TWC Artist Chat / Jeanne Ricks - 'Live' July 14th in Manhattan
« on: June 27, 2009, 08:36:38 PM »
Hey Gang-
Thank you all for being so receptive and positive - it is sincerely appreciated.  Bruce Walker at Hidden Beach Records currently has a copy of my new CD 'Make it Work!' in his hands and is to make a decision (along with Steve McKeever) about doing a release of it.

Some of you are located out here in the NY area so I wanted to put out an invite.
There's a very important concert upcoming.  I have been asked to perform in the 'Jazz Tuesday's' series at the Manhattan Baha'i Center's Dizzy Gillespie Auditorium (53 E. 11th St. - btw. B'Way & Univ) at 8pm & 9:30pm.
This performance is also being video taped and it would be really helpful to play for an involved and enthusiastic audience - instead of empty seats!    Guys, this is a concert hall, not my band's usual kind of venue (night club/restaurants) where we can rely on 'regulars' or walk-ins.  We actually need to fill the space with our own audience.
True, Tuesday nights are a drag.  I can say that traffic at that travel time is relatively light and parking easier (because the 'No Parking (7am - 7pm' and 'Trucks Only' limits have all expired by then).  AND there are some slammin' restaurants in that little area.
So please come out if you can.

All the best,
-Jeanne

Local Forecast / Independent Music Removal
« on: June 05, 2009, 10:46:11 AM »
Yep, they've decided to remove the independent music from TWC completely.

Here's the email that they sent to me as a courtesy:
'The Weather Channel has set a goal to maintain its current audience base, while attracting new audiences, and would like for the network’s music and sound to complement this goal.  Towards this end, we are seeking a composer or music production company to develop an overall sound for the entire network.    We are looking for an individual or group that is innovative, highly creative and has an understanding of programming music for television.'

So that's it.  You know they're going to choose a company because no individual has the time to put-out that much music on a daily basis.  They probably already have a production house lined-up.
It's a shame.

Local Forecast / New Album - I Need Your Help
« on: June 23, 2008, 03:42:18 PM »
First, I need to thank you guys for the kind words you've posted about the music.  You can't know how much that spurs us all on to keep doing what we do.  Since musicians mostly create mostly on computers now - we work in a bit of a vacuum.
I've been frustrated by the lack of enthusiasm for the 'new' version of 'Simple Pleasure' that I worked so hard on (2 overnighters).  When The Weather Channel phoned to get permission to use the song on their CD I was initially honored to be included with such notables - but quickly went into a panic once I realized the state of that original recording.  It was very poorly recorded on 8-track, 1/4" analog and had tons of hiss as well as an embarrassing amount of distortion (because I recorded it hot - in an attempt to reduce the noise ceiling).
So very literally the track was un-usable for a digital CD - it would've sounded like crap next to all these polished artists' works. So I set immiediately to work and even managed to have it over-nighted to an incredible mastering engineer in Chicago (Danny Leake) and got to their manufacturere in the nick of time.
The Thing is.... been trying to get my second solo album out for a while.  Releasing it myself (including the song by song internet sales) is not an option for too many reasons.
Was hoping to rally some support for the effort through you guys if you'd feel up to the challenge.  I need to prove to the labels that there is indeed an enthusiastic market for my music.  Would appreciate any support in campaigning the labels to sign me as an artist.  I need your help!
I'm hoping you, like me feel the music deserves the same kind of hype and exposure that Dave Koz, Najee, David Benoit, Jeff Lorber and Norman Brown get.  But, they still have trouble seeing women as Jazz Artists - which makes NO sense.
There are four labels that I've been trying to impress but, not getting past the gatekeeper.  This kind of assault on a record company by TWC fans, I don't think, has ever been tried....So, if you're willing...let's see what happens!
