Everything Else TWC / TWC Desktop "App"
« on: December 27, 2011, 04:53:37 PM »
Anyone download the latest Desktop "App" from TWC?  I have always had a TWC desktop program but here recently I updated it and now its real nice.  Nice graphics and such.  For some reason the temperature icon in the taskbar is a little smaller than before.  I'd be nice if the icons were animated as well.  Just curious if anyone downloaded the latest update.

General Discussion / Cox or Dish Network
« on: April 13, 2011, 09:07:34 PM »
Aside from Cox having a weatherstar...which one is better?  We currently have AT&T U-Verse and I'll admit, I really like it.  They have some cool features but their whole-home DVR is really dragging us down.  We have 3HD TVs and everyone likes to record a bunch of shows.  With U-Verse the farther you are away from this box in the neighborhood, the less amount of HD "Streams" you are allowed.  We were being allowed to have 3HD but due to continuous problems that amount has went down to 2HD. While we could just deal with that and watch SD, why pay $10 for HD when we can't even watch it half of the time?  Anywho U-Verse rant aside, the question is Cox Vs. Dish.

We had Dish like 3-5 years ago and it was outstanding.  Service was never interrupted unless there was an extremely severe thunderstorm.  The amount of channels we got was decent.  We really liked it.  We then got Cox and while they had pretty much the same amount of channels, the service would occasionally get interrupted.  However, the main thing we are questioning now is the amount of DVRs you are allowed and how their HD picture quality is. Obviously Cox Topeka has an HD Star and more local channels, Any comments would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks guys!!

Emulator Videos / Kansas Weatherstar 4000 Emulations!
« on: March 29, 2011, 05:25:44 AM »
Heres one from Topeka I just made.  The audio was originally "Moon Tune" by David Sanborn, but youtube wouldn't let me keep it, so there's some youtube "Audio Swap" song instead.  I will post random emulations from random parts of the state in this topic as well.  Hopefully with some more TWC-type music!

General Discussion / Changes to Topeka's EAS on Cox
« on: March 25, 2011, 08:52:04 PM »
I recently stumbled upon a letter Cox sent to the County regarding changes to the EAS.  It states that the ability to locally activate it is no longer available and that it will still be activated in compliance with Kansas' EAS plan.  Well I skimmed through that plan and didn't really see anything telling what was required to be activated.  So my question is...do you guys know or think they will still activate the EAS for Tornado Warnings? As far as I know, the only thing that absolutely must be activated are Emergency Action Notifications.  Here is an image of the letter.

PS I sent Cox an Email and all they pretty much said is that they routinely test the equipment and NOAA is in charge of activating emergency weather alerts.

I'm quiet surprised this hasn't been posted but a large Earthquake and Tsunami struck Japan a short time ago with wide-spread devistating damage, and now Tsunami Warnings are in effect for the entire Pacific including the state of Hawaii, with (according to TWC) a Tsunami Watch for Oregon and Washington.

Well, we are finally switching from U-Verse back to Cox.  We have had nothing but problems with their service.  I was comparing channels we would loose and gain, and found we will gain a few channels I missed.  With U-Verse, we don't get...

Topeka's local CW and MyTV networks, as with local school and college channels (which believe it or not I used to watch.)  Of course we will be gaining weatherscan  and local forecasts again!!  As well as I think Hallmark and a few others.  However, there are still a few channels I wish we would get, before like 2007 we used to get the Fox affiliate from Kansas City, but it was taken off the cable system for some reason.  Also, I wish we would get a channel from Lawrence, KS (A short drive east of Topeka) called 38 the Spot! Which airs a variety of programing.

Anywho I thought it would be interesting to see what channels other people wish their cable/satellite provider would get.

WeatherSTAR Tech Support / Olathe, Kansas IS
« on: March 04, 2011, 08:20:01 PM »
I do apologize that I do not know which cable system this is on, but the local weather ID is 22535. This is in Olathe, KS.

On the metro weather map, it has "Olathe" placed twice on the map.  I do know there are two airports in Olathe, both with NWS reporting sites.  I believe this is why there are two "Olathe"s...but the second Olathe is placed in Missouri on the map and I believe this probably leads to confusion among people with the cable system.  Here is a video from youtube:

WeatherSTAR Tech Support / #22909 LDL

Topeka, KS
Cox Communications

I noticed that on the LDL or little bottom strip displaying wx. info, it shows Silver Lake, Berryton and Topeka.  Cox doesn't serve Silver Lake to my knowledge.  I was wondering if it would be possible to remove Silver Lake and possibly Berryton and just have Topeka and Forbes Field.  Topeka (Billard) serves Tecumseh and Northern portions of Topeka.  Forbes Field serves Berryton, S. Topeka, Wakarusa, Pauline and Auburn.

General Discussion / Emergency Alert System
« on: September 13, 2010, 03:00:33 AM »
I have a small interest in the EAS and thought I would post a topic asking some questions.  If you have Cable or Sattelite (or any other TV service besides antenna) do they have an EAS system? If so what does it look like and what do they activate it for?

We recently switched TV service from Cox Cable to AT&T U-Verse.  With Cox it was a plain black screen with white text stating what was going on, with voice heard.  They activated it for Tests, Amber Alerts, Tornado Warnings and I assume would for national emergencies.  Thats it.
Videos:
Tornado Warning

Required Monthly Test (The video's owner prevents external embedding)

With AT&T U-Verse, theirs is a small banner across the bottom of the screen with a EAS Tone heard, and you can dismiss the alert by pressing the Exit button on your remote.  I think this it pretty useful becasue during a Tornado Warning, I would rather listen to the weather people on a local news station than the EAS.
AT&T Activates the EAS for:
(as far as I know) Just about everything including watches!!
Video:
Tornado Watch

Since we have had their service (about a week) it has been activated for a weekly test and a Tornado Watch!! Never seen an EAS activated for a Watch but theirs did.  I don't care though since Im a EAS fan.

But I'm just curious to see what other cable provider's EAS looks like and what they activate it for.

General Weather Chat / Possible Tornado in Topeka, KS
« on: June 14, 2010, 03:16:37 AM »
Around 11:20PM 6/13 the NWS issued a Tornado Warning for Central Shawnee County including the City of Topeka.  Winds up to 85MPH were reported in Central Topeka where officals believe a small, brief tornado may have touched down.  A funnel cloud was later reported near the NWS office in East Topeka.  Sirens sounded some 25 minutes later at 11:45 as the warning was being allowed to expire, causing confusion for people.  We will know tomorrow whether an actuall tornado touched down.  I was outside most of the time watching the storm pass by and happened to catch a video of the sirens going off (again, as the warning was expiring...)

Also the Radars under the "Radar Section" as well as the Radar for the "Topeka" section...and sometimes the Manhattan & Junction City sections...but sometimes it works for those cities.
