I'm not sure how long she's been with TWC officially, but this one probably went unnoticed on here since she does online forecasts and (for now), online forecasts only. I know that I remember seeing her back in April or May doing the forecasts for Tampa. Here's the information on her Facebook https://www.facebook.com/WeatherKyla/info (https://www.facebook.com/WeatherKyla/info)
And here's a video of her:

Kayla was on with Alex 4am-5:30am and did the 7 Day Forecast.
I thought only Meteorologists did forecast segments on TWC, at least on TV or has that changed?
Before Julie Martin was a Meteorologist she only did field reporting and non forecast segments in the studio.
Unless I'm wrong, Kyla Grogan is not a true Meteorologist so I find it odd she is doing forecast segments on TV.

TWC HAS had anchors do the forecast who don't have certificates in meteorology before. Examples include Marshall Seese, Dave Schwartz, Kristin Dodd, and Jeanetta Jones (the first three which eventually received their certificates during their last few years at TWC).

Apparently she's done work for The Onion in the past :rofl2:

Though back then, if they had to get Julie Martin on, it was a sign that they were extremely shorthanded. Though today she is an actual meteorologist.
-
Ok so her not being a meteorologist is not a big deal.
It is funny though her last job was playing a news anchor for The Onion News Network.
-
I don't mind her on air, she seems very professional. However, am I the only one who gets a little mad on the inside when someone just switches to a TV Network and 'acts' meteorologist when they've never done it in their life or have a degree? Or if they just switch to a news anchor job if offered it from being a meteorologist? To me people like that seem to carry an a sign that says 'I'm fake' and are willing to jump ship and abandon weather at anytime. It's just a bit depressing and angry that they can do that. I guess I'm the only one, though. <_<
-
I personally don't like to see people doing jobs they aren't qualified for either. Then again it doesn't matter as long as you look good and have a good personality in front of a camera, they wouldn't give a flying flip if you were certified for your job or not. I agree though, she acts like she may know a thing or two and maybe she does and we don't know it. :dunno:
This makes me think of our godawful CBS affiliate WGCL-TV, out of like 5 mets, only one is technically certified (no, it's not the Chief, she's just eye candy just like the last Chief who also didn't have a degree)No wonder this station is laughable. I wish they had of made that 1 certified met the chief, I've read his blog a few times on their site and he KNOWS his stuff.
-
Where do these names come from (their parents, I know, but really!) :dunno:
-
Kyla is a pretty common name now-a-days, if you ask me. You should hear some of the weird names at my school. There's a 6th grader named Jagr (yes, I spelled it right)
-
^Eh, I've heard weirder names BELIEVE ME. Names that make me wanna smh and say lol wut?
Like one of my niece's friend who lives in the same townhouse complex as she does. Her name is Jumanjinay I probably didn't even spell it right, you pronounce it like the movie Jumanji and add the sound nay to it.
-
Lol, sounds really ghetto.
-
Let's not forget Julie Martin.
Yes well aware, and there were many more too... I was just providing some examples.

Yes, it does drive me nuts. Here I am working my butt off to get my meteorology degree so I can have a job as a METEOROLOGIST (which is one of the reasons I cannot stand Al Roker), and all she has to do is have TV experience (well, we can make assumptions as to why she has the job). She doesn't seem too bad, though.

Kayla appears to be a regular on First Outlook. She was on with Alex Wednesday and Thursday.
She's not doing the whole week though.
They should just make it M-F instead of half of the week.

I guess they're still testing her out for that timeslot before they commit to making it a whole week.

It could be a half week and weekend shift like Kelly and Kim do.

She went to Boston University so she must be a smart cookie! It says she studied Journalism there

Is Kyla Grogan done with TWC?
Here's her last FB post,
Kyla@Weather.com
September 2
Hi Everyone - just wrapped up the 55 hour Forecast summer project for The Weather Channel/weather.com - woohoo! Off to do fun things, forgive me if I don't post for a while but it's rest and relaxation time :) Will let you know when I'm back in action. -Kyla
-
I guess she was just freelancing over the summer, huh?
-
She was on with Danielle Banks this morning for 4-6am Weekend View.

Marshall Seese got his degree.

Kyla confirmed on FB that she is freelancing at TWC.

Back on tonight

You don't have to be a meteorologist to report the weather and I've never heard any claims from TWC that they only hire meteorologists. Kyla is smart, funny, and so hot I want to spank her. All I know is when she's on the weather desk I stay tuned to TWC instead of just flipping the channel after the local forecast. The only other people I'll do that for are Jen Carfagno and Stephanie Abrams so Kyla's a big win for TWC.
-
But Jen had a baby...I don't find it that attractive to watch her for that. Abrams is too annoying. Kyla is not bad looking, Banks is hot too
-
Kyla was wearing a very skimpy outfit earlier today. Her legs were all too visible. That skirt was just too short, and I noticed several other remarks on TWC's FB page about this too. These OCMs shouldn't be working for the sex appeal, their job is to provide the weather in a professional manner.
-
So you don't like Jen because she had a baby (the nerve!) I guess that lets out the rest of the female OCM's too since they all either have kids or are pregnant, except Kyla and Stephanie. You also don't like it when gorgeous women with long legs wear a skirt 2 inches above their knee. :dunno:
Have you considered that perhaps you just don't like women at all and maybe that is the problem?
I feel sorry for these OCM's who have to put up with wackos who have something to say about every move they make when they're doing a great job working crazy hours to keep the public informed. Kyla is gorgeous, great to watch and a class act all the way. She has my seal of approval! :worship:

I think you're blowing what he said out of proportion. I didn't see what Kyla was wearing, so I'm not going to pass judgement on that, but we all know the female OCMs at TWC are seen as nothing more than sex objects. The hell with your credentials, as long as you pass the T & A test you're fine.
-
It says further up on this page that she went to Boston University which is one of those schools in the "Most Competitive" categories. That means that her IQ is likely higher than yours and mine combined. I'm pretty sure they don't have a looks section on the college application to get in there. I sure as hell couldn't have gotten in. On her page for facebook it says she's also in the process of getting a meteorology degree. So just how many credentials does a person need to have to satisfy you? I think you're ruling out the possibility that someone can be smart and beautiful at the same time. Granted, it doesn't happen often but it certainly happens! If TWC found someone who is both we should be so lucky!

You missed the point ENTIRELY. I never said she wasn't smart, she probably is smarter than me when it comes to meteorology. Great! I'm just an amateur anyway. I commend and appreciate her for wanting to earn her meteorology degree to further her education in the field. My point was TWC doesn't give a crap about how smart she is, their concern is whether or not she has the sex appeal to hold/build an audience just like the rest of the female OCMs. Having a degree and being knowledgeable to weather/meteorology is a bonus for them.
If you want a perfect example of this, look at three of our veteran female OCMs: Kelly Cass, Kim Cunningham (Perez), and heck even Vivian Brown. All three have changed appearances, not modestly, but radically. Kim is the best example of the three, she's hardly recognizable to me at times.
Also, I don't want to make it out to seem like this only happens at TWC, it happens on a local level as well. At our CBS affiliate we used to have a female weather forecaster who was the chief met named Dagmar Midcap. She was voted "Sexiest Weathergirl in Atlanta" and boy did that station run on that sex appeal angle to drum up ratings. I guess I can't blame them, they were obviously desperate since they were (and still are today) in the toilet with their ratings. They started plastering up numerous billboards and TV ads all based on how she look instead of what she knew. After she left, they had to find their new Dagmar Midcap to bring in ratings and they found her (quickly) with Markina Brown. Once again, she met the eye candy criteria, her meteorological credentials were just a bonus. Just like Kyla, I don't doubt Markina's expertise in weather, but the ad makes it clear that shouldn't be the only thing you should love about her.

And you have missed the point ENTIRELY that television is a visual medium. If you find smart, attractive people so hard to cope with, perhaps you should get your news and weather information from the radio. Then if someone was attractive you wouldn't have to be so horribly accosted by their beauty LOL!
It's fun to watch pretty people on TV. Their appearance is part of their ability to communicate and yes, draw in an audience and in turn possibly boost ratings. Looks will always be a factor when you're dealing with a visual medium. Anyone who gets into that business is well aware of it and I think it's smart of the OCMs to evolve their look, stay current, it's part of their profession and they know that when they choose to work in TV.
If you want to gripe that the information given is sub par that's one thing but to complain that it's wrong to put attractive people on television is flat out ridiculous.
-
Guys, Guys please calm down, we don't need the topic to get locked over an argument.
Kyla is a great meteorologist, whatever she wants to wear is her decision alone and shouldn't be argued about.

Everything in bold once again was EXACTLY the point of both of the posts I made. I may not have worded it the way you like, but that's what I was trying to get across to you in the first place. I don't understand why you keep ranting on about me being offended by a female OCM having both beauty and brains you're not making any sense there since I never said that. You're right she can dress any way she likes and as beautiful as she likes, again I don't care. I don't think beauty alone should speak for the OCM, the smarts she has should too.
-
Calm down, everyone! Looks are just as important to an OCM as are the ability to present and have some knowledge of weather. They all serve a part of the process, and ratings do matter on all of those aspects. Yes, I sometimes wish knowledge weighed a little bit more here in importance, but it's not worth a back-and-forth debate. Please don't make me come back here to this topic again as I will lock it next time.
-
I don't know why, but when I first found out about Kyla Grogan, I thought she was ugly. But I decided to Google her, and you people are right, she is attractive. And it's good that she also wants credentials to back her looks up. That's all I have to say. I don't want to argue.

What about Danielle Banks, is she certified?

Banks received her bachelor’s degree in media studies from Radford University and her Broadcast Meteorology Certification from Mississippi State University.

What a shame. Another great OCM gone.

Oh, no! I'm sorry to see her go. It seems as though nobody wants to (or gets to) stay at TWC these days.

WTNH News 8 Welcomes Meteorologist Kyla Grogan
Kyla joined Storm Team 8 in January 2015 returning to her home state of Connecticut. She began her meteorology career at The Weather Channel where she was part of the team that covered Hurricane Sandy and its aftermath, as well as several major tornado outbreaks.
