It appears Jeff is leaving TWC.
His facebook post "All good things must come to an end and so it is for my time at The Weather Channel. After 27 years of reporting the nation's weather, both in the studio and in the field, I'm moving on. It has truley been a privelage to bring potentially live saving information to viewers, particularly during severe weather situations. I thank you for watching all those years. Maybe you'll see me somewhere down the road!"
-
So he obviously isn't retiring if we may see him somewhere else (he's from Pittsburgh - would be nice to see him on TV here!), which leads me to believe TWC didn't want to renew his contract. Sad.
-
I guess he refused to get plastic surgery. Too bad, I've always liked him. He's one of the few true professionals left there.
-
It sounds like TWC's had another layoff similar to the ones in 2008 and 2009. This TVNewser article mentions that other OCM's will be leaving TWC as well.

I liked Jeff Morrow, so it's a shame to hear he's leaving. I do wish him the best, where ever he may end up.
-
Another classic OCM leaves...
I wish him the very best as he (likely) searches for a better job in meteorology.
-
This is sad news indeed. I hope he's able to find a new job as a meteorologist, and I'm sure he has a good shot at doing so based on his very professional work in front of the camera for a long time.
-
Oh, no. In my mind, he was up there with Jim Cantore. Hate to see him go. It will be even more bad if it turns out that he was fired for a stupid reason.
-
I would say I'm sad to see him leave TWC, but given the hallow shell the network is I'm not, he's better off somewhere better. He was a great OCM along with Vivian, Mike, and Jim and I wish him the best of luck in where ever he chooses to continue doing meteorology or if he chooses to do something else with his career.
-
So sad that he's leaving TWC :( Best of luck to him.

That's not good. Looks like NBC is going to layoff our favorite OCMs again. I hope that Jim Cantore does not get laid-off. I am thinking that Todd Santos, Bryan Norcross or Julie Martin could be laid-off. That's my speculation.
-
I fully expect Mike Seidel to go. Like Morrow, he's been around too long for TWC's tastes.
Cantore is a prized possession; there's no way he's going to be let go.
-
My guesses on the next-out list are Mike Sidel and Heather Tesch, unfortunately.
-
It's sad to see - I liked seeing him on the air (I remember him back to when I first got cable in early 1989!)....he was a veteran influence in the attention-deficit era of today.
It's also a sign that the overbroadcast of "reality" programming is taking its toll on the remaining meteorologists on the network. I could take the excuse of their "saving money" by putting these other shows on, but now it's just too much.
I really only watch during 10-11pm/1-2am when there are live people on - although the Chris Warren rambling/Crystal Egger mispronunciations get to me even then. I am working or out of the house most other times.
-
Although I hardly watch TWC anymore, sorry to see one of the old-timers go. Jeff was one of the mainstays for a long time. I wonder who will be leaving next? Who are the rising stars, if any?
-

From reading that, it sounds like he is leaving on his own, rather than being let go by NBC. I certainly hope that is the case. Regardless, I am getting sick of these legendary OCMs not being on TWC anymore! :( NBC is destroying The Weather Channel!

Do you realize that these older OCMs were going to leave eventually either by retiring or by being forced to leave? They can't stay there forever. Yes, it's sad to hear these legends go, but what if they actually find really good OCMs to replace them? Replacement has to occur if you want to keep an organization around for a long time. I realize the downhill nature of TWC lately, but it was going to happen at some point. TWC is a private-sector company, and this kind of turnover happens everyday in the business world.

Even if they found good OCMs to replace them, it's still not the same. I guess it's sorta like when great players on your favorite college football team leave to go to the NFL, you have to be recruiting other great players to keep the program going.
-
From reading that, it sounds like he is leaving on his own, rather than being let go by NBC.
I wouldn't read it that way. It's simply a "nice" and "professional" way of saying goodbye. Usually if a person leaves by choice, they state it explicitly. The way he phrased his statement is just a nice, neutral way of saying that he was let go.

Well, like I said in my post above, NBC is destroying The Weather Channel. :furious: :finger:
-
This is terrible news. I liked Jeff Morrow, but if he left voluntarily I can understand it. If they fire more people it will be yet more nails in the coffin of what looks like a terminal decline for TWC. Since the initial squeezeback attack in August 2011 the quality and spirit of TWC has been in free-fall.
I don't watch The Weather Channel much anymore, mostly because of what's happened over the past year or so but partially because they don't really cover the events I care about. Why haven't meteorologists been stationed in the Upper Midwest? Why hasn't there been massive coverage of a huge early-season snowstorm? Isn't a foot of snow in early October notable? Anyway, if they fire Mike Seidel I won't be watching them at all anymore. Veterans like him and Cantore are the only thing keeping me tied to their network at all.
As for Jeff Morrow, I know that eventually people have to retire and be replaced, but for goodness sake he wasn't even old. He couldn't have been much more than 60, and he still has a lot of vitality. They could have and really should have kept him for another 15 years. Talent comes in all shapes, sizes, and ages. If all you do is hire young, pretty faces, the pretty face is all you'll have, and nothing else. Some of their younger people do have talent, but so do experienced people like Jeff Morrow.

Why not?

Well, for one, we don't know the entire story, so until we do, it isn't very smart to be pointing fingers right now.

Yes. Please don't make me want to lock this topic. I do not want this turning into yet another "NBC is evil, NBC has ruined TWC!" kind of thread. :club:
This is indeed very sad to hear, especially since Jeff was definitely a familiar face out in powerful storms during Hurricane Season, but I do wish him the best elsewhere.

we're still blaming NBC for this? they're not the reason for EVERYTHING that happens at TWC <_<
-
Considering Jeff did not have a regular shift and was mostly filling in I'm not surprised he has decided to leave TWC.
-
Adam Berg is leaving TWC. Here is the comment from Kelly Cass's Facebook page:
Working this Thursday night with Adam Berg on his last night with us at TWC. I will soo miss working with Adam, especially his wonderful sense of humor!
So long, Adam! It was great watching you on PM Edition/evening live weather.
-
One of my favorite OCMs is leaving TWC. Very sad and I was surprised that he is leaving. I am guessing that 1AM WCL will be a Solo OCM show now. I wish him good luck of finding a new job. We will miss you.
Now who's next to be let go? They just hired 2 OCMs (Dave Malkoff and Reynolds Wolf) so I am guessing that either Julie Martin, Alex Wallace or Todd Santos is next.
-
So sad that Adam's leaving also :( Good luck to him.
-
Looks like another OCM has been layed off, everybody. No more diving into the forecast and taking Chooseday off, gang. :(
It was certainly funny to watch Adam Berg, especially in 2008 and 2009 when OCMs were able to have personalities.
-
Wow. Another one bites the dust. :o
-
No!!! Darn it!!! Adam was one of my favorite OCMs to watch.
Honestly, if this is part of the next string of lay-offs, then I am surprised, because to me, he still seems to be part of the "young" crowd they are looking for.
-
Talked to some sources and lets just say his departure wasn't his idea
-
I'm not a proponent of blaming NBC for anything that happens at TWC, but at the same time, people need to quit being soooo sensitive to that word around here. Very juvenile.
This is actually the first I heard of his departure. He was there a long time, and I expect his resume to be impressive for future employment. I liked his on-camera demeanor. He had an air of enthusiasm in his tone of voice that I think is perfect for TV.
-
Best wishes to Jeff & Adam.
-
From his TWC FB page,
"Adam Berg
Hello all! Sad to say but tonight is my last night at TWC. It's been a great run. I've been here since the summer of 99 and on camera since roughly 2003. Ive learned so much and have really grown as a person, father and weatherman....so I'd like to think. I will miss my co-workers dearly. They have really shown their true, beautiful colors over the past couple weeks. Best people in the biz. I'll miss you guys too! Thanks so much for your kind words and support.
Alright, on to the good news. I'll be creating another facebook fan page for you guys to join if you would like. Please check back. I need to figure out how to do it first...lol!!"
-
He wasn't laid off. He has a new 10-week-old baby at home and he's going to be a stay at home dad. They just gave him a "send off" goodbye on WCL tonight.
-

Good for him!
I'm sad to see him go. Really enjoyed his broadcasts.
Best of luck to Adam!
-
I am so sad to see Jeff Morrow out the door. One of my favorites to watch.
I remember coming home from school every day as an elementary/middle school student and turning on the TV to watch him and Vivian on "Weather Center PM" or "Afternoon Outlook." He is a fantastic field reporter, and a fantastic meteorologist. Best wishes to him. I hope someone will take him on their weather team.
It's also sad, because I am not too shocked to hear about this.
But, as Patrick stated, it has to happen at some point or another, whether they are laid off, retire, or leave on their own. I don't think we should entirely point fingers at NBC. NBC has been in control for a few years now. If they were the solely responsible for this, I would imagine they would have canned him sooner. Again, we cannot make assumptions.
Best of luck to Jeff!
-

No, he was laid off according to TVNewser:

And also according to TVNewser, TWC is laying off several OCMs and I assume Adam and Jeff were part of the layoffs
-
Fewer OCMs = fewer live weather segments? :dunno: :(
-
Fewer OCMs = fewer live weather segments? :dunno: :(
They've already hired some new OCMs such as Reynolds Wolf and maybe some more. Keep in mind that any replacements coming in likely have lower pay than those who they replace.
-
wow, it's sad that all the OCM's are either leaving or getting fired/laid off :(
-
There goes another one. That's ashamed.  :(
-
It doesn't sound like things are getting any better at TWC. We still have the same amount of time of "reality" programming. That is less TV time for OCMs - any time on-camera seems to be at a premium. Combined with revenue issues, I guess this happens.
Given what happened with The Today Show this summer, I can't be surprised. :(
-
Is Alex Wallice still with TWC? He's last show was 10/6 Saturday AM and he's not posted on his TWC Facebook page since.
Ray Stagich, Danielle Banks and Reynolds Wolf have been alternating doing First Outlook.

Interesting move.

His departure was part of the cuts. He just has something to fall back on unlike Morrow unfortunately .

From Ad Week,"Since the acquisition by its new owners, TWC has lost all of its original meteorologists and has begun to use talent from the NBCU stable, including Al Roker, whose production company has played a significant role in the network's expansion into serial content."
http://www.adweek.com/news/television/layoffs-hit-weather-channel-144510 (http://www.adweek.com/news/television/layoffs-hit-weather-channel-144510)
I'm not sure that is 100% true. Some of the OCM's from the 1980's are now working off camera.
Unless they were part of the 7% let go today.
Keeping track of who is still with TWC.
Maria and Eric were on this AM.
Kim was on tonight with Chris and Paul.
Danielle said on Facebook she on with Nick Wed 11am-2pm.

Thats a play on words. Its not nearly as bad if you consider the OCMs before the acquisitionvs after rather than since its founding to present.

Nicole Mitchell on Facebook is saying Heather was let go,

The Personalities page has a few spaces missing.
Adam and Heather are still on there, though - somebody take a snapshot of the page....and the RADIO section, too. There may have been radio people laid off, too.

I don't see Peter Lik on there, or Greg Postel
As we seen in the past, TWC takes a while for them to update there bios. Peter Lik's show only airs overnight and no new episodes are being produced. Greg Postel is new to TWC so it will take a while for his bio to appear.
-
Someone should rename this thread or move it to a new thread with a different name. It should be "2012 TWC Layoffs". Can someone do that?
-
Done. Sadly Kacy P who worked on graphics and played a role in the IS2 graphic development was let go. Apparently everyone effected had to be escorted out of the building. We thank her for posting on here from time to time and wish her the best of luck with her future endeavors :(
-
Martin, do you know which radio meteorologists (if any, which isn't doubtful) got axed? :( I'd also assume that STAR Team jobs got cut as well.
-
Wow, that's too bad. I wonder why they had to "restructure?" Maybe the ratings aren't so great. :dunno: It's funny someone mentioned that Peter Ilk guy. I remember them making such a fuss over him before his debut, but I don't think I've heard anything about him since! :o
-
We may want to hold off on Heather Tesch. For some reason Nicole Mitchell removed her FB comment on the OCMs who are leaving. Maybe she knows but jumped the gun, or was given wrong info.
-
TWC updated their personalities page today and Alex and Heather are still there,
http://www.weather.com/tv/personalities/ (http://www.weather.com/tv/personalities/)
Dr. Greg Postel did a report tonight.
-

I hope she is still on. When I would catch her on the air - she was pretty outgoing, moreso than in the past. It is pretty neat to see.
On the flip side, Chris Warren is just painful to watch these days.
-
I guess these layoffs come in stages, but did TWC get hit hard money-wise recently? Because the fact that, all of a sudden, they are now not only getting rid of OCMs but also behind-the-scenes people is very suspicious. I wouldn't think replacing behind-the-scenes workers would really affect their ratings, unless they thought some of their graphics were horrible or whatever, so it seems like TWC is trying to get rid of as many veteran workers as possible so they don't lose as much money.

Kelly confirmed on FB that she is on vacation returning Friday.
So it appears the only female OCM gone is Heather.

Heather is on this morning with Vivian, so we'll have to wait til the end of the month to see what happens.
In the back of my mind, I've always thought Heather was next to go. I love Heather to death, but I've noticed, especially when she is with Todd, she seems a bit scatter-brained and I can't help but think what management thinks of that. With that aside, she is a wonderful meteorologist and a great personality.
It doesn't surprise me all these layoffs are occurring with all this taped programming.
-
I agree. She was on Saturday and she stopped got a drink....and said I had to get a sip of something. Something?? Umm... you are live!!!!
-

They're not replacing anybody; they're eliminating positions. As more and more live programming disappears, there is less need to have as many staffers around. Compared to back in the day where they probably needed three different shifts of employees to work the 24-hour cycle, they probably only need two shifts now - morning and primetime.
-
Wow, that sucks for those affected. I, too, am still seeing Heather as of this afternoon so she'll probably be working until the end of the month. Didn't Jeff also report live in Birmingham when the tornado was very close but just missed the downtown core back in last April? That report was quite noteworthy, it was all over YT and several news stations. I wish the best of luck to those 3

Their salaries could also be a playing factor in this decision as well... You have to keep this in mind.
-
I recall when Heather was taken off of working on air Monday thru Friday. She waited until the very end to post something about it on her Facebook page. I remember, she said something about having Monday & Tuesday off. Working behind the scenes Wednesday thru Friday. And back live on air Sat/Sunday. I do hope she stays.
-
The really mean thing about all of this is that the current format has been around for a while. These layoffs mean there is now no intention to have more live weather (no additional live time). Shouldn't they have thought about this a while back? They could have saved money then. It would be nice to have a job, yes, but the expectation of getting any on-air time for these veterans was led to false hope.
....and to think I wanted to be a meterologist :(. That area really is cut-throat. I am glad I am just a software engineer with a degree in Computer Science. :hmm:

If you had pursued Meteorology, you would have found out that broadcasting is the most volatile position in the field. It's why I'm in the NWS and not on TWC. Layoffs are extremely common in broadcasting, and it will continue to be that way.

Well said, Patrick.
You should not let the things you are reading hear about a large network bring you down. Follow your dream. Do what you want to do. As Patrick said, it is very volatile. I can't even describe the amount of changes that occurred within not only the weather department, but every department at the television station I worked at for a year and a half. It scares me, but it's something I love to do, so I am willing to put myself out there and give it a shot.
As Patrick mentioned, there are definitely other opportunities in meteorology beside broadcasting. I've been thinking a lot about the private sector if the whole broadcast thing doesn't work out.

Yeah. NBC may be responsible but it wouldn't make sense to point all fingers towards them. They've earned pretty high salaries (I don't think I should guess the amount) which to NBC wouldn't be feasible if they didn't have the money. They were also in the middle of restructuring.
-
Wow. This is my first time on in a while and it's been interesting to read these threads. I had heard about the layoffs but hadn't gotten to really read about them in-depth. I am sorry to see Jeff Morrow and Adam Berg go,I enjoyed watching both of them. Hearing of Jeff's leaving took me back to my 8th grade year when I used to get up every morning and watch him and Jen on First Outlook. I feel like that was just yesterday although it was three and a half years ago. Best of luck to both Adam and Jeff on their future endeavors. Has anyone heard anything new about Heather's possible leaving? I hope she doesn't,she was one of the best IMO. Although I haven't had time to keep up with watching TWC lately,I'm still sad to see OCMs go. Decent ones at that.
-
What will happen if there is a severe storm, that requires 24/7 live OCM coverage? Has NBC thought of that? If they get rid of 99% of the OCM's. You can't have just one person, on the air all those hours during severe storm coverage. I know there are those folks on air & behind the scenes who have been there a long time, probably make good money. And I'm very familar with how corporate wants to save money by hiring younger talent with little experience. But corporate should realize, if they truly want to put on the air credible programming. There are times when you must spend money to make money. And if it means working with OCM's like Heather, Vivian,Kelly,Kim, Danielle. Then that is what they should do.
-
Heather is one of my favorite OCMs, but when I've watched her lately, she seems to stutter and be a little less "energetic" than she used to be. Maybe she is reaching her final days on the station and doesn't really "care" anymore (though I highly doubt that), but if her position is currently safe, then I hope TWC doesn't frown too much on her actions.
-
Yes, the rumors are true.
From Heather Tesch's facebook:
"By the way, for all of my amazing and supportive fans, this will be my final few days at The Weather Channel as TWC makes some programming changes. It has been a fabulous ride for 14 years. I appreciate your loyalty so much!!"
So I guess her contract ends on the last day of October as rumored.
-
I wonder what those programming changes are?
-
I wonder what those programming changes are?
Probably because TWC is relaunching and revamping it's morning programs.

Warren Madden is on today 3pm-7pm so he is still subbing at TWC.

Heather Tesch has a new Facebook Fan Page she created for herself, as her TWC one will be deleted soon.

Did Heather get a chance to say goodbye? My power went off prior to the end of her scheduled shift. She looked really sad(like she had been crying) but like the dedicated professional she is. she was great! I looked at the "new" TWC November schedule. And Day Planner is still on as usual. Sadly, it seems to me, because she has seniority there, and probably makes more money. Management decided to not renew her contract. Sad, very sad. Go to school, learn your craft well. Make a good living. Only to be shown the door. Because u are good at what you do. And make good money.

Due to circumstances beyond her control, due to Sandy's approach, they could not do a proper goodbye for her.
-
Heather has been kept around due to Sandy. I'm assuming they have her through October 31st due to her contract; it's just that barring the storm, she wasn't going to get any airtime Monday-Wednesday, but now because of Sandy, they're taking advantage of the remaining three days of her contract.
-
I know the hurricane is serious. Maybe, if she does not get a chance to say goodbye live. Perhaps she could record a goodbye and post it on youtube or her facebook page?

She already said her goodbyes on her TWC Facebook page. She set up a Facebook Fan Page for herself separate from TWC.

Weathergirl1987, for as much as you have posted here lately, why haven't you registered here yet?

This is my final day at TWC. I have been here for 14 years, and loved every minute! One hour left.

Wow. My mom was watching TWC this afternoon and texted me about some "dumb blond on TWC." Then said she announced she was leaving. I thought for sure she was talking about Stephanie. Never would have guessed it was Heather.
-
I was watching, and she did say goodbye on the air.
We'll miss you Heather.

I wouldn't consider Heather a "dumb blond."

Eh, she's kinda been "dumbing" down in her on air performance the past year or two if you ask me. Maybe that's why I didn't enjoy seeing her as much as I used to.
Regardless, I hate I missed her on air goodbye. :hmm:

TWC sure seemed to make her look like one over the past few years. Pretty much every woman on air there now is expected to have the same "generic blond" look. I hate what TWC has done to the image of the female OCMs there over the past three years.

Are they really trying to focus on sex to get viewers? It seems so. All of the female OCMs now have to be young (or at least realistically appear so), wear tight dresses and show their legs, wear heels that have no business being in front of a weather map, and, on occasion, show more cleavage than one needs to see on a serious network.
-
There's no doubt about it. That's exactly what their policy is now.
-
Sad how our fav OCMs we grew up watching are getting laid off. I think only Jim Cantore and Vivian Brown are left. Seems like all the classy ones are being phased out, like almost all TV in America anymore. We live in an extremely oversexed society where it is in your face 24/7/366, and TWC seems to be going along with the sheeple program. I dont watch TV much, almost all of it is garbage. TWC is almost all fluff now, except during breaking weather events like superstorm Sandy
-
Has anyone from the Star team been affected by this round of layoffs? Like Tony F or Tarops (forget his first name)?
-
I thought I read a post in here somewhere that at least one person from the STAR team was affected.
-
Heather posted some photos from her "TWC farewell party." on her new FB fan page.
Some current and former fellow TWC employees were there.

It's not just TWC.
NBCUniversal lays off about 450 in budget cuts (http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20121113/ENT10/211130392/NBCUniversal-lays-off-about-450-budget-cuts?odyssey=mod|newswell|text|Entertainment|s)

Alex Wallace was on the week of October 22nd then seems to have disappeared again.
Either he's got some extra vacation time or he did leave TWC.

He hasn't left TWC. He's probably doing extra stuff behind the scenes, especially with the new formats and such. He was declared the host of First Outlook, so I'm sure he'll return soon.
-
Kim said Alex was on at 10pm.
-
Just because an OCM disappeared for a week or more doesn't mean they're gone. Usually an official statement from the OCM posted on facebook or twitter or somewhere around is the way to confirm.
Anyways, so many layoffs and I can't seem to follow anymore. lol. I think the last time I heard, Adam Berg left TWC, but that was more of his choice rather than theirs', if I recall...?

No, he was definitely laid off (https://twctodayforums.com/forums/ocms/jeff-morrow-leaves-twc/msg176831/#msg176831).

Trying to keep track of the OCM changes this month. If I'm correct,
Kelly Cass and Paul Goodloe are OCMs for WCL 5pm-7pm M-F.
Reynolds Wolf is now the regular OCM for First Outlook.
Alex Wallace and Kim Cunningham are now the OCMs for Weather Center Live Sat and Sun at 7pm and 10pm.
Alex and Kim contribute to some of the weekday WCL shows at 10pm and are OCMs for the live segments at 1am.
Not sure who the regular weekend OCMs are for Weekend Now 11am-2pm and WCL 4pm.
