Title: New Update Coming?
Post by: gt1racerlHDl on December 24, 2009, 03:36:42 PM
I know it's been awhile since an update but i was wondering when will an update be available?

I was also wondering this.  There are numerous things that would be awesome to update and include in the emulator.  Here are some suggestions (https://twctodayforums.com/forums/index.php/topic,2489.0.html)...

I second everyone else. An update to allow new functions and so on would be cool!

Hey guys,
I was wondering if there has been any updates yet... seems like development is dead to me :(

Weatherscan Local - Update Demonstration - 7/10/2010 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IaAFggpYOM0#)

heres a video showcasing the 2 of the 3 updates. 1: adjusted font size on the 36 hour forecast product. shorter text length enlarges the font size, while longer text makes it smaller (the current size used in the public release) 2. font size increased in the extended forecast product for the weather condition icon text. 3. bulletin page added, which isn't seen in this video.

Very nice!  Do you need the 3rd party program to get local alerts for the bulletin page?  Also, will an LDL be present in the upcoming release?  Of course, when will this be available?  I'm stoked!

in regard to the LDL, how should it behave? just like the LDL in the beta ?

Wow! I like the update Brian! I also see you took a few of my suggestions as well. In regards to the LDL I like how it works in the beta.

the above beta isn't the current release (wayy before even the one thats being used publically), i am trying to figure out how the LDL should be displayed. the beta's LDL in the video is how it looked in the past, and I am fishing for opinions.. Weatherscan Local never had a LDL, but the regular StarXL did..

I dunno if I was supposed to do this, but it didn't mess anything up, but when I ran the emulator on my laptop one time (output to 2 sources), the external source came undone and I saw a diagnostics screen, and when I pressed "Command1", it turned on a yellow XL-like advisory LDL.

Here's what I'm talking about

I like the background (if it has some transparency).  If you are able to program the LDL background to have some transparency, then I say go for it.  If not, just text is fine.  If it's possible, I think it would be cool to have a yellow background and a red background (i.e. yellow for t-storm watch/warning, red for tornado watch/warning) to pop up when an alert is issued).

Will it be possible to display local alerts?  That would be sweet.

currently, i have the ldl working again. right now i have it being displayed on a blue-cloud background.
in regard to local warnings, the answer is that it def. works with them. theres a 3rd party program that ingests messages put out from the NWS, and instantly relays them to Weatherscan. This has always worked, even with the current public release, however when i build the next public release (hopefully soon), the alert add-on will be installed. in regard to the message ingester, instructions will follow too!

I absolutely love it! Maybe the ldl shouldnt go all the way to the edge though. I attached a quick image of what i'm talking about. I also noticed that you put the black transitions back. IMO I think it looks better and more authentic without those transitions.

My apologies, I should've been more specific. When going from the "Local doppler" screen, to the "Current Conditions" screen, there is a very quick black transition in between them. Check your video below and go to 0:29 seconds in the video. There is a fast black transition when going to the Current Conditions screen. In the other update demonstration video you posted 3 days ago, I noticed the "black transition" wasn't there.

Very awesome!!  I don't mind the blue cloudy background for "non-alert mode".  Would it be possible to do the yellow/red background or perhaps just red when an alert is issued?

Also, the font seems too heavy.  Maybe a non-bold version would work, or perhaps a different font altogether.

How is the LDL controlled in the program?  Is it set to display on X slide and not on Y slide, is it timed or is it a check-box somewhere?

many questions and stuff to answer all at once..
-the "black" that you see between products is itself a product of my emulator. no the original weatherscan did not create this effect. this is created within my program when one frame unloads and the next frame is loaded and shown. the most clean method i was able to create from transitioning from the radar's to something else was done the best way I could, given VB6 is still the programming language I am using for the program. the product pages are rendered objects, the radar (with the title bar inserted) is a rendered object, and even the fading between one product to the next is a live motion render. the only thing that is not a live render is the call to the radar files, which is just played back file-by-file sequentially.

-other than the current conditions LDL, the alert LDL does behave like it would on a regular star. even when a warning is issued, a  beep sequence is heard. this alert function of the emulator isn't fictional, it does infact work!

-the font used is the best one I could come up with, which is still what the original weatherscan used. most of all the pages use the proper font and its compared with its size. the only product that may differ is the 36 hour forecast.

-i havn't quite figured out how the ldl should function, maybe some advice should be given. i was debating on a solid toggle of on and off, but currently in the program, it alternates on and off by itself after a lapse period of time.

-yes, i would like to experiment with different weatherscan backgrounds, i am not a creative artist, i only am working with what i have. when i release the next version of the emulator (hopefully really really soon, like within the next few days to a week or so) i would like to pre-package the emulator with some user-submitted overlays and backgrounds.

-i am also proud to announce that the National League (of baseball) won the All Star Game for home field advantage during the World Series.

-i am thankful that many enjoy this emulator, if it wasnt only for me using the emulator, i wouldnt bother making enhancements and modifications to it.

-i love feedback!
Brian

Thanks for clearing that up Brian. Although I thought the video you posted a few days ago looked pretty clean, maybe those transitions can be optionalized in the future...As for the ldl, I like the idea of it being toggled on & off. Maybe It can be toggled on every other loop starting at the title page, and ending when it gets back to the title page again. I like the font currently used for the ldl. I was experimenting with some other fonts in my image editor, and I think the current font used suits it the best. Speaking of fonts on a side note, the new 36 hour font size update is an excellent update, but if it's not too much trouble could you make size of the days of the week always be the same (small) size? And finally for my 100th post ("lol who cares?") I have attached the theme packed I have worked on that WxScan used for larger cities. The quality isn't perfect but hopefully it's still useable.

Ah ha!  Well, may I suggest the LDL font to be normal instead of bold?  If it's the legit font from the original, then I'll go with it :D just not bold (in that instance because it looks chunky).   I like the font used on this video (Weatherscan XL Emulator - October 30 2007 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ptsH5VGTCA#)) but the blue sky/cloud background (of course).

-For the on/off of the LDL, I would suggest the option to have it either on or off in the version build.  It's either on all the time (except the radar/satellite loops) or off...unless an alert pops up, which then overrides everything and displays whether you have the standard LDL selected as on or off.

-Small tweaks on the LDL (if you want)
---When it displays the current condition, could it say "Currently: T-Storm" instead of just "T-Storm"?
---Barometric Pressure says "29.91F In." right now - is it possible to have "29.91" F"  or "29.91in F"?
---Are wind gusts shown when applicable?  i.e. does it say "Wind: ESE 15 G25"? (That's how I would suggest to display it)

I have 3 full themes and a 4th one in the works.  I could send them to you if you'd like.  The zipped files are around 10mb each.  I even cleaned up the moons to look more graphically appeasing like on television.

-I noticed the clock moves up and down between frames.  Could the clock be set to the same coordinates on all slides?  It appears to be different on the regional sat/rad (one I noticed as of now).

-How does the bulletin page work?  Does it automatically jump to that when an alert is issued or is it placed after the title slides?

-Did you rummage through my suggestions on my other thread (https://twctodayforums.com/forums/general-emulator-discussion/emulator-additions/)?  I have just a few!  Haha.  Hopefully you can use them.

-A watch/warning graphic would be sweet...I know many people enjoy just text but I think a combination of the two would be awesome.

-Let me know if you need any graphics or anything for the emulator!

I love it!!  Questions:

1. When the text finishes scrolling (I'm assuming twice through), does it return to the normal LDL?
2. Is it possible to program the name (type) of advisory into the bar text instead of "Non-Precipitation Advisory"?
3. Does the bulletin screen stay until the watch/warning/advisory expires or is canceled?
4. Does the watch/warning/advisory get "bumped" out (replaced) by a newly-issued warning product?
5. Excellent work & great song choice!!!

Awesome Brian! I have a few questions as well.
-Does it have a warning tone for severe weather crawls?
-Can you have the option of having just the weather warnings/watches instead of the main ldl?
-In somewhat response of tuez13's question about the clock, correct me if i'm wrong Brian but could that difference in coordinates on the Regional Satellite page be as simple as it being the only page with anti-alaising on the clock? And if so could you possibly switch all of the pages to have anti-alaising on the clock as it looks much cleaner.

Question 4  I don't receieve warning LDL's because I am directv subscriber but I have seen what are you are talking about in youtube videos.  That's probably one of my favorite features of the actual weatherscan.  Similar program I use inconjucntion with GRLevel3 outputting to my tube TV is WxScroll (freeware premanent watch/warning/advisory LDL, written in java).  You can choose your county or multiple ones and customize which warnings.  Haven't checked in awhile for an update though.  Last time I played with it I saw it go from severe thunderstorm warning but halfway through the bulletin it switched to special weather statement regarding the warning expiring due to the storm falling below severe limits.  Only thing really missing was customizable alert, it uses a windows default sound instead....I had my ws4000, star xl, wsxl, intellistar, and EAS SAME header alert tones ready for use =p
Title: Re: New Update Coming?
Post by: cc17926 on July 20, 2010, 08:13:18 AM
First, to answer all the questions above, for the most part, all of them are yes, except for the anti-aliasing clock, i will try and figure that out. the clock is an ocx i wrote which overlays everything except the regional satellite. the warning scroller will behave (for the most part) just like the real thing (overruling the weather details LDL). the warning scroller will unload in a similar manner as TWC's scroller would (thats if you configure it to do that!).. The bulletin page stays as long as *something* was issued. also, as some of the warning products were not identified in the program, its master product name, like "non precip advisory" was displayed. i have a way to correct that without a problem.

Second, if anyone wants to help me with this.. i am looking for royalty-free background graphics for the following products.
for the coastal waters forecast segment: Bulletin Page (for coastal advisories, etc..), Tides (yea, hate 'em, but i am going to include them.)
new product, summer Outdoor Activity: Map contents background (already have the Up Next menu board frame).
new product, travel weather: Up Next menu board frame, and a Map contents background.

all images must contain no people and capture an element of life and weather.

thanks for any contribution!

i spent all night on this.. btw im not an artist either, so if it looks weird, thats why. this will be apart of the next updates.
you will also be able to select which set of coastal maps you want to use (northeast, southeast, and west)
also note, at some point (soon) the configuration site will be down for some changes to accomidate these updates, and at that point the new copy will be released.

Sorry I never checked in here until now, but I appreciate your updates. I do have a few questions and suggestions in mind:

- Did the WSL really have a seperate screen for coastal advisories? I know on the intellistar, the advisories are just posted in the coastal waters forecast.

- As for the LDL, I think an option to turn it on or off is the best idea.

- Also, I'm glad you're looking at implementing travel. Other products I hope to see in the future include Airport and Health.

- I'd also like to see several different background packages for the local forecast, like coastal backgrounds and city backgrounds.

Title: Re: New Update Coming?
Post by: cc17926 on July 22, 2010, 07:38:55 AM
Mike, I am actually not sure how the XL behaved with the coastal advisories, although the way the NWS places them would make me specially make a bulletin page for them. As for the LDL, I was planning to create a few toggles to handle that, along with the possibility to do some crawls and stuff. I know the real XL did 12 crawls, but I might just do a rotation of like 6, more than that would seem useless. Even if the emulator was used for a TV network or whatnot, too many crawls are pointless. as for the background thing for the core LF, i just made a hack using the sunrise/sunset calculations to determine if we are currently in daytime or nighttime. it would allow the emulator to do two things, one is to select the correct haze icon for the current time of day, the second is the potential for the emulator to use a day/night time theme. figured it would be a clever idea to include since its not that hard to implement.

Also, for the first time, I am putting code up, but I need a few people to check my work, in regards to icon mapping, and icon naming. please post corrections!

Quote

If (LCase(skyident) = "ptcldy") Then Skyfound = "29": Exit Sub ' at night
If (LCase(skyident) = "mocldy") Then Skyfound = "28": Exit Sub ' at daytime
If (LCase(skyident) = "ptcldy") Then Skyfound = "30": Exit Sub ' at daytime

The changes I made correspond to TWC's reports unless the conditions I changed cannot be pulled into the emulator

Dunno if the emulator will accept the upper corrections I made in bold but here goes

Quote
Public Sub SkyIdentification(skyident As String)
If (LCase(skyident) = "mocldy") Then Skyfound = "27": Exit Sub ' at night
If (LCase(skyident) = "ptcldy") Then Skyfound = "29": Exit Sub ' at night
If (LCase(skyident) = "mocldy") Then Skyfound = "28": Exit Sub ' at daytime
If (LCase(skyident) = "ptcldy") Then Skyfound = "30": Exit Sub ' at daytime

i was going to link a copy of the nws directives in regards to words used, but this does not include all, just forecast words, however still informative: http://www.weather.gov/os/public/dir/CCF_Specifications.pdf (http://www.weather.gov/os/public/dir/CCF_Specifications.pdf)
if i find it, i will link the one inregards to the "regional weather roundup" (current conditions)..

These are the ones I know about right now...hopefully this helps.

-Question: Is there another regional satellite as an option?  For me, my map displays the central plains instead of northern plains.
-Question: Will the 5-day forecast be entered the same way it is now?  My NWS office doesn't put out the extended forecast in that format (or at least the system doesn't find it when I search to setup the config).
-Question: Will the sunrise/sunset data be grabbed from the NWS site with this build?  The current method claims the sun rises at 3:30a and sets at 7:20p here :S

Here's another thing you can use.  I recorded these today if you want to replace the voice for the currents and forecast.  To me, the other voice was somewhat depressing.      Enjoy!

Those top 12 work excellent for me!  I think it covers the nation really well and they are the busiest airports in the country anyway so my two cents is to go with that!

Brian, how is it looking for the overall progress?  Did you need any help with anything else?

the attached image is a concept of what i am working with this morning. it is live data, however i am still a ways away from having it functioning automatically. thats my project for the day today!

enjoy, comments are welcome!!

VERY nice!!!!  I'm extremely excited to give this new version a run!

Couple things I noticed / would like to suggest:
- When it displays the current condition on the LDL, could it say "Currently: T-Storm" instead of just "T-Storm"?
- Barometric Pressure on the LDL says "29.91F In." right now - is it possible to have " 29.91" F "  or " 29.91in F "?
- LDL wind gusts "Wind: ESE 15 G25" (That's how I would suggest to display it)
- Temp on current airport conditions (sky condition and temp) is still somewhat hard to read
- Regional satellite from Wunderground for my area is centered over Nebraska, therefore placing the banner over North Dakota.  Is there an option to use TWC's enhanced  infrared satellite imagery (like the radar and radar/satellite maps)??
- LDL ad crawl?  Any interest in adding this?
- Tie in 5-day with extended forecast grabbed by zip code or something?

Thanks for everything, Brian!

Wow nice update Brian!! Just a little I noticed as well.
-The new font you used for the day like (Wednesday) looks EXACTLY like the same font used in Wxscan! but could you possibly increase the size of that font by just a tiny bit?
-In response to tuez13's suggestion about the radar I agree, can you maybe just allow an option to use TWC's maps?
Title: Re: New Update Coming?
Post by: cc17926 on August 05, 2010, 11:40:01 AM
in regards to the maps, the radar comes from twc, and the satellite comes from wunderground. if you would like to try something else, the map must be able to be called as an image from a url, and in that url must include your latitude and longitude, along with the size resolution the map will cut. yea i know alot must happen here..

Most Weatherscans have that, although a few others (such as the FiOS ones) have different airports on there. It depends on how many main airport sites are set (it can be anywhere from 1-4 IIRC).

Just have a couple more questions. How many screens will the airport package have (disregarding the local airport conditions)?

And sorry to bring up an old subject but I was just noticing that one of your earlier update videos was a bit different. Mainly that there was a window around the emulator, and the transitioning was slightly different (the "black" transitioning I mentioned before). Once again sorry to bug you about this, but if it's not too much trouble could you make those "black" transitions optional? I know its a very small thing but I strongly believe its just a step closer to making the emulator even more authentic than it already is. Here is the video btw: Weatherscan Local - Update Demonstration - 7/10/2010 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IaAFggpYOM0#)

I have no idea what you mean by "black transitions" Do you mean its because some of the slides stay on for a second after transitioning? His screen recorder did that

I mean the little transition from local doppler to current conditions. Check this video below and compare it to the one above, one above has no black transition, the one below does. it isnt the recorder because I see it when i run the emulator myself. As I have said I just think optionalizing/removing them would make it more authentic to the real thing. I'm not trying to be bothersome. Wow  I dont see that on my emulator  You must have a higher refresh rate on your monitor if you can see that
Title: Re: New Update Coming?
Post by: cc17926 on August 07, 2010, 01:02:30 AM
-that black is a product of the emulator disabling the radar layer and enabling the forecast layer. only reason it is seen is based off performance from the computer. i *might* be able to work around the situation by forcing the forecast layer to show before unloading the radar layer (thereby eliminating the emulator from quickly showing something empty).

-in regards to the airport product, currently i have it show one primary location, and 8 other locations. would it be possible to show more? yes, it could.. but do YOU really need it to show more than 8 other locations ? .. the book says the airport product can show 0-4 primary airport locations, however i believe one location is sufficient.

Very awesome!  I would assume since there is a sat/rad option and a radar option that there would also be an enhanced satellite option as well.  I could be wrong.  Do you know, Brian?  If there is, would that work for ease and consistency?

As far-fetched as this may sound I am making a XL radar map. I have found some old files I worked on and I'm basically halfway done. If in the final product I am able to provide an efficient and accurate map would you be willing to implement it into the emulator? And if so would it be okay If it is scaled to this NWS map here?: http://radar.weather.gov/Conus/RadarImg/NAT_20100808_1908.gif (http://radar.weather.gov/Conus/RadarImg/NAT_20100808_1908.gif)

Yeah, I know.

To clarify...the Wunderground set views don't match up with the others grabbed from TWC's interactive images.  Plus, the Wunderground regional view set for my location is centered over Nebraska, placing the banner over North Dakota whereas the TWC maps are centered over my set lat/lon.  The current maps grabbed from TWC are: local/regional radar and local/regional enhanced satellite and radar composite.  I figured there is an option to swap out the Wunderground map for the TWC map with just the enhanced satellite.
