My weather STAR XL has been replaced with a new unit. Thought it was an Intellistar, but the graphics look like the IS2 pre November graphics and has Jim Cantore's voice. There is also no local LDL.

looks like your unit has been replaced with the new IS2 SD version but i may be wrong.
-
That's so weird. Never seen a unit like that before? Maybe they'll replace all units with that. The graphics are better.
-
That looks very interesting!
Maybe this is the unit that Tony from the TWC STAR team was talking about when he mentioned back in July (https://twctodayforums.com/forums/programming/new-graphics-coming-to-twc/msg184191/#msg184191) about all of the XLs and the other legacy STAR units (4000s and Juniors) being replaced with new and better units. I could be wrong though.
-
Basically that looks like the pre-November 2013 IS2 for SD (without the left sidebar). As much as I like it, I can't imagine why they would change to that instead of the current graphics. Thought they were supposed to make all their graphics uniform. That only lasted, what, 3 months?!

Here is a warning crawl. Notice it's a special weather statement with red and its in the style of the Intellistar crawl. Sorry about the jerkiness, need to buy a tv tuner for my computer.

I'm hoping this new STAR will eventually produce an LDL. I'm so tired of not seeing a local LDL, especially during long form. I contacted TWC on weather.com and got this response....
We apologize for any inconvenience. I’ve contacted the Product Manager in charge of this problem and his team is currently addressing and creating a solution in getting it fixed. We appreciate your feedback and your patience in resolving the issue.
Thanks,

Just noticed that the weather STAR XL on Shentel Cable (SD Ch 28) Summersville, WV Local ID 03028 has been upgraded to the Intellistar. It's also showing pre November 2013 graphics from the Intellistar HD units, not your current Intellistar look(from clips I have seen on youtube). Also not getting any local info on the LDL just National and blank during long form. Just wondering if the unit just hasn't received a graphic update. Thanks

i might be going out on a limb here but i'm thinking this is going to be TWC's universal star for all headends on SD. It might be awhile for this to happen but from the videos it sure looks like it. i wouldn't mind seeing this in SE Mass.

It appears this is the case, but it didn't get pushed the newest graphics update. Looks very much based on the IS OS/software packages.
-
Im probably going out on limb here but could this be in preperation for extended locals? I say that because I dont think they created extra maps on the updated graphics. Just a thought. Maybe they thought there graphics stink and are reverting. :o
-
I ordered a tv tuner for my computer. I will post some higher quality videos of the IS2 SD when I receive it.
-
They are probably going to update the graphics on the IS2 SD when all the legacy Stars are replaced. Looks like the IS2 SD is currently using the cue tones used for the legacy STARS and that's prob why there is no local LDL. It would be a waste if they would leave the graphics like they are now.
-
Perhaps all the XL's are still being used, but the unit's graphics were just updated to v4?
-
The old graphics make me wonder if TWC planned to upgrade all the 2003-based Intellistar units to this SD IS2 back in 2010 but they ran out of money to produce them all or something. Interesting.

I totally agree with this! hopefully this is the case because the current IS seemed rushed for WATT *Weather All The Time*. they could do so much with the IS2 SD especially LF segment wise and the LDL whenever that gets released.
-

I doubt it.
I thought I read somewhere that a location with a 4000 is also starting to do this. Don't quote me on that though since I can't remember where I saw it.
-
a friend of mine on youtube CriminalCola said the XL in Hannibal is showing the new IS2 SD and will upload a clip soon.
-
You'd still think that they would have updated the graphics to the new ones that they came out with in November because I remember somewhere that they were going to have the same icons everywhere in order to have brand recognition across all platforms.
Oh well, I don't really care that much for the new icons anyways

How could this possibly happen with a 4000?!

What is going On? By the way CriminalCola Posted a video on the "IS2 SD"

It's a shame this wasn't used for folks who actually had the IS in the first place on the SD feed when this graphical version of the IS2 was still relevant a few years ago. For me personally it would have made up for not having the IS2 since at least it's more appealing to look at. However, I think Mike explained why that probably didn't happen.
-
Not sure what to think of this. Like others have mentioned, it looks like an old IS2 but with SD graphics. Something tells me it might be an IS2 but with slightly different hardware and software (maybe a cut-down version without the ability to output HD). If that's the case, it is something TWC has probably been working on for a while because it doesn't have the "metro" graphics update yet. Too bad, we don't have longer flavors anymore to see other forecast products.
One thing that I noticed in the first video is the lack of an LDL during national programming. Is this still running off the analog satellites that the legacy STARS were running on?
-
That makes two XL's with the SD IS2. I wonder if this is only for legacies and not for the other ones with intellistars?
-
This is the IntelliStar Jr. It is replacing all legacy units. It will get the updated graphics at some point.

Intellistar Jr., huh?
Do you know how this compares, tech-wise, to the IS1 and IS2? It's obviously different in that it has Cantore's Vocal Local, but also the specs have to be closer to the IS2, right?
And, if we have an IS already, like with Fios, will they go to the ISJr.?

My guess is that the legacy STAR platforms are unable to "support" the IS or IS2 hardware, so a slightly simpler form of hardware (hence the suffix "Jr.") needed to be used. If you already have the IS, I doubt they would go to the IS Jr. because that would be considered a downgrade (like going from the IS to the XL).
I'm not quite sure why the graphics have not been updated yet, though, but Tyler said they would eventually be updated.

here's the link for the better quality video of IS 2 Jr. Couldn't the video embedded into my post.

Do you know how long TWC has been developing/manufacturing these? Had to have been well before the WATT campaign started.
-
I'd much rather have this over the current IntelliStar. This looks like a total step up in my eyes... :whistling:
So IntelliStar Jr? Is that the official name or what? I'd like to see a press release or some form of documentation on this machine. I'm interested.
-
I think it would apply to it, since it's a stripped down Intellistar 2, so maybe Intellistar 2 Jr. Is ok
-
Does this mean we can call the original IntelliStar the "IntelliStar Sr?" :P

Unfortunately, I don't have any technical specs, and I think they'll be hard to come by. As for FiOS, I previously reported that TWC's President said Verizon will be getting the IntelliStar 2 "in three months." I've been told that three months is pushing it, and it'll likely take longer, but I have confirmed Verizon is indeed currently in the testing phase with IntelliStar 2's.

I have no information on that at this time. I can say that replacement of the legacy STARs has been in the works for a while now though.

IntelliStar 2 Jr. is actually the official name. And I agree, I think I'd rather have this than the original IntelliStar.

Lol, that's what I was thinking.
I really like the Intellistar Jr. Why can't they use this instead of the current IS??

well it definitely is acting like a senior right now :P

really wish the current IS was using the IntelliStar Jr's graphics over the Windows 8 look.

the legacy STAR platforms are on analog c-band with Videocipher II encrypted
-
Are the IS2Jrs taking the analog feed then? That'd explain why they cue after the chimes. Eventually they'd switch them over to digital - which is why the legacy STARs are getting replaced in the first place.
As for Fios - I'm looking forward to being able to watch and record on 619 and not 119. Finally. (Though there's a chance I might be back on xfinity by then.......)

Sent a email to Mediacom's Area director. His response was: The next major upgrade for TWC equipment at our area headend is scheduled for April and it will include the localized LDL.
-
The Dalles, Oregon still has an XL, but I imagine it won't be there for long as the town's local Charter headend will most likely get an IS2 Junior unit soon.
