I didn't see this topic here, so I thought I'd bring it up. Have you heard music features on TWC in other places, such as radio, stores, etc.? If so, which songs/artists and where?
My friend and I were coming home from school today, and on the radio, there was a commercial that featured Steve Glotzer's "January Day" in the background, playing throughout the commercial. A good 1 minute portion was used.
-
I've heard "Morning Dance" by Spyro Gyra at Wal-Mart once.
-
Does smooth jazz radio count?
If so, I heard many TWC songs on The XM 71 Watercolors Smooth Jazz Station. Recently "No Limits" by Nick Colionne.
-
I've heard "Morning Dance" by Spyro Gyra at Wal-Mart once.
+ "Feelin' Happy", Dan Siegel.
+ "Linus and Lucy", but that's so common at X-mas time anyway.
They don't play music at my Wal-Mart anymore.

"Layla" by Derek and the Dominoes. :P
It's not uncommon to hear that song. I've heard it at a lot of places, and on the radio. Most recently at Whole Foods supermarket.
-
I hope that wasn't directed at me. Part of the point of this thread is to tell WHERE you've heard a song, not to just toss song names out.

Yup. They play way more indie, TWC and "better-sounding" jazz than Watercolors.

Oh, ok. Even though I have FiOS, my Grandma has DirecTV (The reason why I seldom watch channels from them). I probably didn't even heard of SonicTap before. According to that company, they are DirecTV's new music source. They probably replaced XM for unknown reasons.
-
I think he meant to quote Molly's post not Zach's... yes by Watercolors he was referring to the XM channel.

Wow, so it's just a coincidence that TSOP sounds exactly the same?
-
Wow, so it's just a coincidence that TSOP sounds exactly the same?
It's no coincidence, it's the original theme to that show when it first debuted in the 70's. It was purposely recorded for the show as the theme in 1973.
Theme music
Soul Train used various original and current music for theme songs during its run, including:
1971-1973: "Hot Potatoes", by King Curtis, and later redone by the Rimshots.
1973-1975: "TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)", composed by Gamble and Huff and recorded by Philadelphia soul studio group MFSB with vocals by The Three Degrees. Released as a single, this song became a pop and R&B radio hit in 1974.
1975-1976: "Soul Train '75", by the The Soul Train Gang, which was later released as a single for the newly formed Soul Train Records.
1976-1978: "Soul Train '76 (Get on Board)", also by The Soul Train Gang.
1978-1980: '"Soul Train Theme '79", produced by the Hollywood Disco Jazz Band with vocals by the Waters.
1980-1983: "Up on Soul Train", first by the Waters and later by the Whispers, whose version appears in their 1980 album Imagination.[12]
1983-1987: "Soul Train's a Comin'", by R&B artist O'Bryan.[13]
1987-1989: "TSOP '87", a remake of the original "TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)", composed and produced by George Duke.
1989-1993: "TSOP '89", a remixed version of "TSOP '87", also by George Duke.
1993-1999: "Soul Train '93" (Know You Like to Dance)", by the hip-hop group Naughty by Nature with a saxophone solo by Everette Harp.
1999-2006: "TSOP 2000", with rap vocals by hip hop artist Samson and music by Dr. Freeze, and again featuring an Everett Harp saxophone solo. However, a portion of "Know You Like to Dance" was still used in the show's second-half opening segment during this period.

I still see they say that they're smooth jazz on their website and list jazz artists that I know of, but haven't heard in a long time on there.
They've also been calling themselves "Smooth 98.7" instead of "Smooth Jazz 98.7", which worries me. :(

Probably Kenny G. (Because I cannot recall hearing most tunes out in the general space)
In fact, I'm getting suspicious when I started hearing tunes that sounded like what I heard on the radio more, since 2009, being skeptical of the NBC/Universal aquisition.
It appears that NBC/Universal possibly ruined TWC!

I remember saying to my siblings and parents, "I've heard that music - The Weather Channel". All thanks to Matt. :twothumbs:

I knew the much beloved holiday playlist was used a lot of years, but I guess I never realized it was that many! :thrilled:
On top of the one I heard earlier, a little later on I heard "I Saw Three Ships," also by David Arkenstone, on Live 365 Christmas Breeze. I honestly didn't expect this one there given that Christmas Breeze predominately plays orchestral instrumental Christmas songs rather than smooth jazz or new age ones.

While watching a video review on the Tyco VideoCam TVC 8000 from YouTube user Druaga1, I came across a short clip of what he recorded from his Tyco cam from around either late 1997 or early 1998, and it appeared to be The Weather Channel playing on TV in the background with the song "Casino" by Physical Therapy (October 1997 playlist). The clip starts at 14:17-14:28.

Sorry to bump, but from a YouTuber I regularly follow (since I also had always had a similar interest in electronics and A/V equipment); VWestlife posted a video review on a cheap, but decent cassette-USB converter. In the video, one of the cassettes that was featured features the songs "Morning Dance" by Spyro Gyra (May 2002 playlist, starts at 6:56), and "Europa (Earth's Cry Heaven's Smile)" by Gato Barbieri (December 1986 playlist, starts at 13:01). It appears that the pre-recorded cassette came from an album called: "CD 101.9 - Today's Cool Jazz" (I'm not sure what radio station it originally came from for the official album).

Does anyone else here Trammell Starks in this song?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tct_zir0nJc (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tct_zir0nJc)
It sounds like the beginning of Midnight Cruise looped over and over again at a lower speed and pitch.

This morning, I've heard "The Lowdown" by Spyro Gyra at my neighborhood Kroger Signature store.

Sorry to bump yet again, but yet another TWC song that I've heard elsewhere recently came from another one of VWestlife's recent videos. He demonstrates an old Pioneer CT-W616DR cassette deck and the cassette that he featured came from yet another cassette album called "CD 101.9 - Today's Smooth Jazz" (again, doesn't specifically mention what radio station and media market it originally came from or what the exact volume it was since I originally thought there was only one single album). Anyways, he mentioned that he found the cassette on eBay of course. One of the featured songs that were from the other "CD 101.9" album features Kenny G's "Songbird" (from the December 1986 LF playlist). The song starts at 11:20.
https://youtu.be/v14AEKgX29U?t=11m20s
One of the earlier songs that was also featured early on in the same video also was previously featured on one of the songs that was featured on one of The Weather Chazz's previous WeatherSTAR 4000 emulation videos (I can't remember the name of the song since the emulation video that he posted back around either 2007 or 2008 was based off from a replica of the early 1990-era text-based 4000 and I could of swore that the same exact song featured on the other "CD 101.9" album was an actual TWC song that was featured on one of the 1990 TWC LF playlists).
-
I've just heard another classic TWC Local Forecast tune from a recent FreewayJim video. "Summer Sky" by Shakatak (May 1985 playlist) is featured in the Tampa freeway tour (starts at 6:46 at the Selmon Expressway part).

It's been awhile since the last time I heard a legacy TWC song in the wild, but recently, while I was watching a video review of a long since discontinued Sony bookshelf stereo model on VWestlife's YouTube channel (the same guy that often cover all sorts of electronics, and computer-related stuff), one of the sample CDs he featured in the video features David Benoit's "Urban Daydreams" album and plays a little bit of "Sailing Through the City" (June 1990 and April 2002 playlists) when he demonstrated the built-in CD player feature.
Album cover is shown at 12:44 and starts playing at 13:30.

Does it have to be a specific song at a particular place? If not, I'll say there were several occasions. I remember being in department stores at shopping malls, and at restaurants, and remember hearing music I recognized and would say, "I've heard that music - The Weather Channel."
Also, we used to have Kenny G's CD, "Breathless", and it was at the time that the playlist the featured several songs from that album, the April 1993 through January 1994 (minus July 1993) was on. End of the Night, A Year Ago, In the Rain and The Joy of Life.
