Should Memphis Get Traffic On The IntelliSTAR?
« on: April 14, 2010, 06:41:29 PM »
We have had Traffic Pulse for many years here in Memphis. I think that Memphis needs traffic.  Does anyone agree?

Apparently the agreement between TWC and Traffic Pulse (ultimately NavTeq) is that the traffic information needs to have been available for 3 months in a media market for it to be added on Intellistars in that specific media market. However, according to traffic.com, there is no data generated for Memphis.
TWC in...
Lansing: Comcast, Channel 36, STAR ID 22840
E. Lansing: Comcast, Channel 40, STAR ID 22842
Lansing Area: Broadstripe, Channel 40, STAR ID 25349
Current STAR count: 32. Be sure to see my channel for links to all the uploads!

Tulsa, OK gets traffic? That's surprising.

I gotta ask this, why the heck did they bother using traffic.com when it doesn't even cover half of the country? :dunno: I think it's odd that Salt Lake City gets traffic, but not Memphis or nowhere in MS does...

Yet there's traffic in Naples, FL? That was a waste too. <_<

TrafficPulse simply pulls all the traffic data from local sources. Because your city or location is not served by them is not their fault. TWC uses them because it would be stupid if not impossible to try and get data from every state/city locale that has data. Traffic data is run by local governments. It is up to that state to spend money on senors and infrastructure for major roadways and interstates.

You can no longer go by the map or data availability on traffic.com. TrafficPulse now uses historical traffic data for many areas, including in markets where TrafficPulse has been available for years. TWC, as with most media outlets, does not use this historical data.

Even if it was just Flow and Incidents Memphis should be able to get some data?

Not if Memphis uses historical data as I mentioned, which I suspect.

Is this also why the traffic maps have been disabled everywhere?

No. Historical data has been used by TrafficPulse for over a year now. The map issue was caused by TrafficPulse changing the coding for the maps, which screwed up TWC's.

TennDOT does have traffic info and cameras for the state's metro areas. Traffic.com is run by NAVTEQ. It appears that NAVTEQ and the respective metro area or DOT have a partnership in place that allows NAVTEQ to access and use the data.
