Title: New Album - I Need Your Help
Post by: imin on June 23, 2008, 03:42:18 PM
First, I need to thank you guys for the kind words you've posted about the music.  You can't know how much that spurs us all on to keep doing what we do.  Since musicians mostly create mostly on computers now - we work in a bit of a vacuum.
I've been frustrated by the lack of enthusiasm for the 'new' version of 'Simple Pleasure' that I worked so hard on (2 overnighters).  When The Weather Channel phoned to get permission to use the song on their CD I was initially honored to be included with such notables - but quickly went into a panic once I realized the state of that original recording.  It was very poorly recorded on 8-track, 1/4" analog and had tons of hiss as well as an embarrassing amount of distortion (because I recorded it hot - in an attempt to reduce the noise ceiling).
So very literally the track was un-usable for a digital CD - it would've sounded like crap next to all these polished artists' works. So I set immiediately to work and even managed to have it over-nighted to an incredible mastering engineer in Chicago (Danny Leake) and got to their manufacturere in the nick of time.
The Thing is.... been trying to get my second solo album out for a while.  Releasing it myself (including the song by song internet sales) is not an option for too many reasons.
Was hoping to rally some support for the effort through you guys if you'd feel up to the challenge.  I need to prove to the labels that there is indeed an enthusiastic market for my music.  Would appreciate any support in campaigning the labels to sign me as an artist.  I need your help!
I'm hoping you, like me feel the music deserves the same kind of hype and exposure that Dave Koz, Najee, David Benoit, Jeff Lorber and Norman Brown get.  But, they still have trouble seeing women as Jazz Artists - which makes NO sense.
There are four labels that I've been trying to impress but, not getting past the gatekeeper.  This kind of assault on a record company by TWC fans, I don't think, has ever been tried....So, if you're willing...let's see what happens!

Didn't realize that was the issue with the "unavailable" Simple Pleasure.  I really do like the TWC version too...it's a more mellow "smoothier" version, while the old one was "rough and tough".

Have you tried sending to Midas Records, the people who put out the TWC CDs?  SP was on that first one, which hit #1 on the charts...they might take a look.

I can try to contact NuGroove Music since me and another member live in that area where they're headquartered from. Unfortunately, i'll need his email. My stupid virus protection program blocked MySpace.

Yep, Midas was first on my list but, believe it or not - beside this Weather Channel release - they're a Country label - go figure!

Wow, I hadn't realized that the original version of "Simple Pleasure" had been recorded on 8-track tape. That version sounded very clear when it originally played on TWC. If you don't mind me asking, how long ago did you record the song?

Same here. It sounded very good for a tape recording. :o

How about "Winter Heat"? Were you planning on releasing that song on your new album too?

Not sure if this is the right place to post, but Ms Ricks, is (or will) there a way to purchase the original version of "Simple Pleasure?" I like that version much better than the TWC CD version. Thanks and welcome! :shades:

'Simple Pleasure' was originally registered with BMI 01/24/2002.
It was actually a song with vocals called 'Trust' that I'd written for Chaka Khan when I submitted a bunch of tunes to her through her management.  They eventually recorded my song 'Don't Ask Me' from that collection but, it was never released and sits in WEA's vaults along with many other artists work - awaiting the light of day.

Also, wanted to clarify.  When I said 8 track, I was referring to multi tracks not, those cartridges that they had back in the 70's.
The tape I used was 1/4" reel-to-reel but, it was limited to only 8 multi tracks as opposed to the new version of 'Simple Pleasure' which was recorded to hard drive and stores anywhere from 24 tracks to infinity (in theory & depending upon your available memory)

Hi Jeanne,
Wow! I had no idea that was why the original version wasn't released! Thank you for clarifying. Me and several other members were curious as to why you released the edited version on the TWC CD. It's a shame it isn't available though. :(

Out of curiousity, are you planning on releasing some of your other TWC tunes, suchs as "Clea's Day", "One Life", or "Winter Heat"?

Jeanne, is it possible for you to give me some short, 30-second or so clips of your music? I was thinking that might help convince visitors to help with your cause.

'Winter Heat' is actually on the new CD and 'Clea's Day' is earmarked for the next one (assuming I can get distribution for this one).  Funny you should mention 'One Life' I have been searching for that song myself and cannot find the original song program sequence or recording  (made digital transfers and not everything came over neatly).  The ONLY mixed rendition of it that remains has some terrible digital chatter.  So, I'll need to record it again from scratch - which means you guys won't like it

I already gave you a satellite clip of the famous original version of "simple pleasure' and "Steppin home for the holidays". I'm pretty sure I have clips of a few of the other songs I mentioned somewhere on my computer. If I find them, I'll give them to you. And I'm certain that there's a clip of "Winter Heat" floating around somewhere on youtube.

Just got off the phone with the new admin guy (Steve Hurst's replacement) at The Weather Channel and he's putting some new tunes of mine on in August and there'll be lots of new songs to follow-up.  A bad bout of Carpal Tunnel had me restricted to south paw only for nearly 4 months but, I had a great PT and am running full tilt now.

I love your music. He's a new age artist. . Plus I've lost interest in his music over the months since TWC rarely plays his stuff and his music is played over and over again.. But I've always loved your music. Not just Simple Pleasure, but Winter Heat, Summer Rain, Steppin Home for the Holidays and your other music that TWC has aired. :)

Don't want to blaspheme.  But, I've been trying to find out for years who does the music programming for the cable company Optimum.  They have music running behind their channel guide and for the life of me I've never been able to find out who to submit music to.  Anybody, have a notion?
Also, I went through my files again and actually found the original 'One Life' but, I don't see where you upload clips on here.

I love your music Jeanne....very much... I am late to this conversation but I have been following your TWC songs for years...its a shame you lost simple pleasure and one life... but I cant wait to hear your other songs.... I have what I think may be a good idea... some artists have what they call a "snocap account" either on their websites or their myspace, and they make their singles available for purchase. I can contact the prez of HeadsUp especially since he is in my home state of Ohio....and I own over 30 HeadsUp titles. I was wondering if your christmas songs the instrumental versions of Silent Night and What Child is This were available, both songs used on TWC Holiday 2007. Thanks for contributing awesome music....we need more Women Jazz Artists  B)B) :twothumbs:

You're more than welcome Gary.  Would've put it up a week ago but, my computer got fried when I tried to upload service pack 3 for Windows.  The repair person says the operating system must be reloaded which will effectively fry all my applications and require that I reload all my programs and get new authorization codes etc.  It will be a tremendous amount of work.  Not happy   :furious: :furious:

A friend gave me a loaner so at least I'm back in the world.

Nope, that one is nice but, not mine.  On the 'August Playlist' messageboard page, the 2nd song you listed as 'possibly Jeanne Ricks' is my song 'Cold Comfort' which, assuming I can ever find a home for my music, will be on the CD.  Still being ignored by the record labels, but still trying.

Hey Jeanne. At least four songs are on this month's playlist. I think Cold Comfort, Familiar Strangers, U Shouldve Told me and Quiet Little Thing. Are they all goin gto be on the same CD ( I hope )

Also other songs I noticed from previous years were The River, Summer Rain, Sister Betty, Nobody's Fool and Clea's Day

are these going to be onthe new CD as well? ( I would buy them all individually if you could arrange it)
also two Christmas songs... What Child is This and SIlent Night from Dec 2007. Let me know

All the Best

I'm with Chuck. If you could arrange some way to sell your songs online (thru snocap perhaps?) I would gladly buy all of them individually. We're doing our best here to help with the record labels, but if their too stubborn to change their minds, maybe it would be a good idea to look for other avenues to distribute your music. Its too good to continue gathering dust, so to speak.  B)

I already have an album on CD Baby, but thank you for the suggestion.  It's probably pretty hard for you to really get the crux of the matter. you see, it's one thing to create a product and then stand on a corner and sell said product out of the trunk of your car i. e. CD Baby and other internet sites.  It's quite another thing to be able to take said product to a higher level of visibility and credibility by having said product available in chain stores, reviewed by major press and played by major radio stations.  There is a credibility which that kind of product placement warrants which cannot be gotten standing on the corner selling product out of the trunk of your car.
While there are a few jazz singers out there (and currently ANY Black female not singing Hip-Hop is considered Jazz) - there are currently NO female jazz instrumentalists getting the kind of exposure that they deserve - this is ludicrous.  I have put many years and much sweat equity into my music. I believe the music itself is comparable to any male artist playing music in the 'Smooth Jazz' genre.  If Dave Koz is getting airplay I believe my music deserves like treatment.
I have spent a large anount of time building contacts, slogging thru inflated egos and self-absorbed businessmen who care nothing about music as anything other than a commodity - just trying very hard to get a foot in the door of the record labels for the reasons explained above - credibility & widespread exposure which cannot be gotten from an independent level.
Dudes, it's about way more than just selling 20 or so CD's - you get?

Well Jeanne...I love your music. I am sure other people on here love it too. I realize it is sad that Women Jazz instrumentalists arent recognized, as they should be. I know Jazz is among the original American music , from New Orleans, whether today's rock/pop/hip hop culture sees it or not. Not saying this as an insult to the other genre's of music, I mean everyone has their own expression.  I think a few elitists in our modern day culture are "imposing" certain styles of entertainment be it music, or movies, on the people... and I dont think thats right. There are people like me for example who would love to hear your music, and have CDs with all them songs. I personally love your music, and think it is good that there are women like you, giving an added dimensional expression to Music. It is sad that Big Biz doesnt see that way, and that isnt fair to those of us that do enjoy your kind of music. I know of a few New Age instrumental female artists that I have in my collection. and I have a very large collection too ....over 700 CD's, including your CDs that you released....So I think I know what I am talking about and certainly understand your frustration.

I can't believe a record label won't take a chance on someone who's music is played on the Weather Channel...what I'd assume is the top tier for jazz artists.  And especially for someone who's work has been on there repeatedly over the last several years...

Jeanne I understand exactly what your saying. And I think its an absolute shame that no record label wants to sign you. But that's why I suggested (at least to start with) selling your music on the web by individual song. No, you wouldn't get the recognition you'd get on a label, but at least you'd be making SOME income from your hard work. I know if I were an artist I'd use any avenue I could to get my music out there.

Jeanne,

I don't know whether or not you have the resources to do this, but have you ever considered starting your own record label or publisher? I don't know the specifics about that, but It might be worth a shot. :)

Yeah she does. Maybe if Jeanne submits one of her songs on the radio, people will get attention and that would interest record companies.

That's a good idea. Maybe I'll consider doing the same to the jazz radio station here. (WJJZ 106.1) B)

I would do the same, only the jazz station here changed formats, and is now a rock station.

Hi guys,
Thanks BuckeyefaninOhio , Tpirfan28, lfmusiclover  and everyone.  I think some of you really do understand my plight.  It's not about the money.  It is about reaching a higher level in the game.
THe market has radically shifted - Jazz stations changing formats, smaller labels be consumed by larger ones or simply going under due in no small part to their lack of anticipation regarding the internet and it's impact.  We live in an age of voyeurism....simply put, people not only want immediate gratification they also want to see themselves (hence the off-the-chain popularity of sites like facebook, MySpace & YouTube).  While it does wonders for creating new channels for provocative insightful and creative sharing of ideas, music and video - it is now in fact glutted.  Quantity vs Substance.
There is even a debilitating limitation on the branding of musical styles. ‘Smooth Jazz’ is unfortunately the umbrella that the industry has put EVERYTHING which is not Hip-Hop into.  Why? Because there is a void. There is no other categorization.  Black music has suffered in the worst way from this limitation.
Historically, each recording label had a 'Black Music Department' responsible for developing & nurturing Black talent which therefore had a much broader spectrum of styles including Jazz, Adult Contemporary, R&B, Funk.  But because of the success of rap groups like RunDMC and Public Enemy in 'crossing-over' to predominantly White audiences - the record labels quickly saw an opportunity to make more money.  After all, it is well documented that Whites, not Blacks are the biggest consumers of Hip-Hop.  The Major Recording Companies dismantled Black Music Departments thereby leaving Black Music in the hands of people who care only about the bottom line.  Record Companies knew the quickest access to the largest amount of money was to be made through the pockets of rebellious White teens whose parents support them through their disposable income; and chose to reach them by exploiting Blacks demeaning themselves and portraying fictitious acts and lifestyles of violent anti-social behavior.  This ‘style’ of music has been fostered exclusively leaving no room for the growth and support of other varieties including (my personal interest) Adult Contemporary.  They did this not because there was no market – but, because it was not a quick sell.  In their short sightedness they didn't notice they were killing the creative engine which was Black Music.  Music has become so boring and one dimensional now across ALL styles.  They forgot to even notice the internet's growing popularity.  Once the mp3 was born the record industry's demise was at hand.  Too long had fans been paying over-inflated prices for CD's which once opened only had two or three cuts which were worth playing.  Napster was an instant success!
That's probably WAY more than any of you wanted to hear.  but it is frustrating.  With all of that said - The goal is a P/D or artist deal because, a recording label does still lend a new artist credibility and more widespread promotion and marketing than can be obtained independently.  It's truly about reaching the next level and gaining the same status that someone like Dave Koz has.
All the best,
-JR

This probably a dumb suggestion....but what about concerts? If you play a lot of your music live, then it'll attract many people and may give a second choice to record labels.

Not a dumb question at all.
Concerts happen to be the one true saving grace for independent musicians and where I do the bulk of my sales.  Doesn't impress the labels at all.  You'd be amazed, or maybe not, at the number of really wonderful musicians who have created a little niche for themselves locally but, can not get arrested by the major labels.  Again, the major labels are imploding to be sure.  Where once there were seven or eight major labels there are now only three and even they are running on deficit spending (can't find their butts with both hands when it comes to sales or the internet competition) - but they still have that allure of being able to give an artist credibility and widespread exposure that even the internet cannot give.  Catch 22

check out the creativity of this guy when you get a chance (not original compositions but the editing is noteworthy)

Sorry for the double post But Jeanne have you tried Higher Octave Music?

That might help. They started out as an independent record label and have signed deals for jazz artists like 3rd Force, Brian Hughes and Craig Chaquico. They might help just giving a suggestion :)

Not a bad idea, but Higher Octave might not be as mainstream as Jeanne is wanting.

Hughes and Chaquico aren't mainstream. Boney James, Spyro Gyra, Dave Koz, Nick Colionne, those are mainstream. IMO, your not mainstream if one can't turn on their jazz station and hear you play. I never once heard Hughes or Chaquico play on the radio.

DIfferent concept entirely. Satellite radio itself isn't exactly the definition of mainstream. I don't think Ms. Ricks would want to rely on satellite radio to launch her career.

Yeah, the site seems to be down right now. Let us know if you decide to try Higher Octave music. :)

Adam Berg is an OCM at TWC. You must've said a phrase or something that Adam Berg frequently says.
