Title: I know this has been asked...
Post by: LFMusicFan on July 18, 2007, 07:39:44 PM
What font(s) does the WeatherSTAR XL Version 3 use?
Title: Re: I know this has been asked...
Post by: G2003 on July 18, 2007, 07:42:08 PM
I believe all versions of the XL use Helvetica.

Yes, I believe that is correct.

What about the temperatures and the writing on the CC page?
Title: Re: I know this has been asked...

I believe its all the same.

That's what I thought.  8)

But some of the writing on the CC page is big and wide. What about the title on the bar at the top of the screen? Is that also Helvetica?
Title: Re: I know this has been asked...
Post by: G2003 on July 18, 2007, 07:54:42 PM
I don't know. might be Arial or something.
Title: Re: I know this has been asked...
Post by: beanboy89 on July 18, 2007, 07:58:47 PM
There are different weights and versions of Helvetica. Some extended, and some compressed.

That makes sense.

How much is Helvetica?

Several hundred dollars. But it comes with every Mac.

$100 dollars for a font!?!?! That is ridiculous! :o

At least, thats what i've seen it go for on popular font sites. I have been able to convert the front from my Mac to my PC.
Title: Re: I know this has been asked...
Post by: LFMusicFan on July 18, 2007, 08:08:06 PM
I guess I'll just have to live with Arial. :-\

All areas of the XL used Helvetica, except for the title bar headings on the current version, which I believe is Interstate (the same font on the IntelliStar), and the TWC logo.

Does Helvetica come with Xp? :-\
Title: Re: I know this has been asked...

No, it does not.
Title: Re: I know this has been asked...
Post by: G2003 on July 19, 2007, 10:43:37 AM
Correct, It is not on XP. It does come with every Mac, since the early 90s. What i was able to do was
get a free converter from a certain website, put it on my mac, and it converted the Mac font to Windows
format. And it works. There are only 2 different kinds of it though.

That's weird, I've always had Helvetica on my PC. Not that I ever use it (I think it's dull).

Maybe it came with a software program thats on your computer??? Because I know for sure that it doesnt come with Windows. Ever.

Yeah I too can assure you that Helvetica does not come with Windows.

You should be able to, by using a font converter to convert it to the Windows format, and then transferring it to your PC. What kind of Mac is it?
Title: Re: I know this has been asked...
Post by: lfmusiclover on July 20, 2007, 07:04:10 PM
Its an old PowerMac 8100/80. How would I a) get a converter onto the Mac, and b) get the font to the PC? Floppies aren't cross-platform, are they? And obviously a Mac THAT old doesn't have a burner.

It came with my Office XP I think, ither way its on my system.

Heres what i did:

I have a Performa 6400 running Mac OS 8. It is connected to the internet, so i downloaded a free font converter for Mac.

I converted it, then used a Floppy to transfer it from the Mac to the PC. It all worked flawlessly.

Gary, theres no doubt that your system is able to do this and has Helvetica.

To save trouble, I could probably post the font here, but there are only 2 versions of it.

What would be the difference if you posted yours or if I took it off my Mac myslef? Would I get something more out of doing it myself?

No, it would just be more work for you. Why go through all the trouble to do it yourself, when i've already done it and have it ready to go?

Thanks for the fonts Gil!

BTW, what big font is used to name the reporting site on the CC screen of the XL?
Title: Re: I know this has been asked...

I believe every font used on the XL is a variant of Helvetica

Except for the titlebar on the XL v3, which is Interstate.

You could try a font called "Swis721" (Google it). It is very similar to Helvetica, and has many more weights any styles than the Helvetica Gil posted. I'm not going to post a direct link to it, because I'm not sure if it is legal to do so.

They were in a topic called "Helvetica".

Gil wanted it deleted (because Billy asked if it was illegal, and then Gil asked for it to be deleted), so I did.

Yes, to avoid getting banned because it probably was not legal for me to do such a thing. I appoogize, but good luck to everyone who got it while the topic was there! :D

Its not illegal Gil. I urge you to put the topic back.

And for future reference ASK ME before you do anything.

I'm pretty sure it is. i mean, its an actually patented/copyrighted font. it DOES cost money,

Yep, It's a commercial font; you have to pay money for it. It's like posting commercial software or full-length clips of songs.

Helvetica Neue Condensed is used in the ad crawl, the 36 hour forecast pages, and the temperatures on the regional maps.  The remainder of the fonts are various weights of Akzidenz Grotesk and, in the case of the v3 titlebars, Interstate.  All are commercial.  Akzidenz Grotesk is particularly expensive.

I can buy Helvetica Neue Condensed easily. But does anyone know the cheapest place to buy individual Akzidenz Grotesk fonts? If I can sample them, I can pick out the ones that I need.

From what I've seen, font prices really don't vary much from place to place.

What are you making it in?

I'm making the graphics with Photoshop. I'll be putting everything together in Adobe Premiere Elements (it's the only fancy program I have at my disposal).

I have been at my computer all afternoon trying to figure out which font goes where. Here is a guess. Please correct me if I'm wrong:
Halvetica Neueu Condensed - regional temps, 36 hour forecast, ad crawl  Where I may buy the font  (http://www.fonts.com/findfonts/detail.asp?pid=434835)
Akzidenz Grotesk Light SC & OSF - LDL, Left section of CC screen
Akzidenz Grotesk Medium - Cities on latest observation screen, cities on metro map???, cities on radar
Akzidenz Grotesk Super - location name on CC screen, daypart forecast, 36 hpur forecast, 7-day forecast, and extended forecast
Blue Highway Linocut - Titlebar

Not sure, but its either a proprietary font, or unavailable for purchase.

I need the logo for something I'm doing (not an emulator if that's what you're thinking). I needed the font to create the logo, but since the font is unavailable, I'll have to trace it.
