The was a song with a sound effect of meowing cats that I remember hearing on the Local Forecast sometime around 1988 or 89. At the end the cats' meowing transitions to a howling sound. I can best describe the song as being very progressive jazz or new age, it sounded very bizarre and distinctive. I think it was one of the shorter LF flavors. I'm sorry I can't remember any more details but I was very young then. Does anyone remember this song?

:rofl2: :rofl2:

The only song I can think of with a cat-like sound is Metameme by STS9. Over than that, I have never heard of any song with meows or howling. :dunno:

A bit of a long shot, but was it "Cats of Rio" by Lee Ritenour & Dave Grusin?

"Cats of Rio" by the Grusins! Yes that was it! Thanks a lot for finding that so quickly, I had searched around the site but couldn't find it myself.
-
Glad I could help! It was in a playlist from 1988. It was used in 1989 as well, but I don't have it on the playlist for some reason. I really need to re-do those.

That music sure is peculiar. :noexpression:
-
Yep, I remember that song. It sounds like the cats are having a party out on the town on a Rio night
-
Yes they sure played some offbeat music at the end of the 80's into the early 90's, to say the least. That was one way TWC was able to distinguish itself in those early days. I remember my dad was in the room when Cats of Rio played one time and he said rather perplexed "Where do they get this music?
-
I listened to the whole song today. It's actually not a bad song. :P

That's what I thought too when I first saw footage from 89/90! There were several songs (like "Surrender" by Harry Miller, the 4 songs by Buckwheat Zydeco, and the 2 songs by the B-52's) that, at first, I thought WTF!? But as with almost all classic WC music, it wasn't long before the music grew on me.

Wasn't Follow Your Bliss by the B52s used before?

Yep, it was a J flavor in the summer of 1990. "Junebug" was an I flavor during the same playlist.
-
Now, why would they include a peculiar-sounding song like this one with cats meowing on the local forecast playlist?
-
TWC seemed to have a lot of peculiar music back in the day. On some playlists in the mid to late 80s, they had Eddie Murphy's Party All The Time and songs from the Eurythmics and aforementioned B-52s.
-
They played some interesting songs by Pat Metheny back then too. I remember "Last Train Home" (another sound effect, this time a train whistle) in particular and a couple others I can't recall the names of but could find easily enough.

I forgot about that one! One of the few Pat Metheny songs I like.

It was last used in 2006.. wish they could play it again :(

Not me, it made me cry jus like Atlantica by Ryan farish

It seems like a lot of these songs I think are soothing, you find them depressing. :P

Yeah, Last Train Home does not sound depressing at all. It is kind of mellow, but actually inspiring at the same time. It was used in a Publix Christmas commercial back in the day, and Tom Sanchez from the now-defunct WSJT 94.1 used to play it every Thanksgiving to kick off the start of the holiday season.

How about "Goin Under" by Devo or "Surrender" by Harry Miller?

Earthbound by the Rippingtons and Transit by Stein & Walder

What sound effects are in those songs? :dunno:
Here's another one...."Unusual Climate" by Patrick O'Hearn.

some of the drumming in Earthbound sounds like thunder cracking.. love that song and some of the instrumentation on "Flightpath" by Jonn Serrie sounds like an alien craft landing
