Title: Jeff Stern
Post by: lfmusiclover on October 03, 2013, 08:39:47 PM
I don't want to prematurely excite anybody, but I thnk I have finally found another elusive TWC artist, Jeff Stern. Jeff had two songs on TWC in the late 90's, Forward Motion, and Morning Steps. Neither song has ever been located, and they may be amongst Matt's unknown songs. Anywho, I found him on Linkedin:

http://www.linkedin.com/pub/jeff-stern/18/bb7/107 (http://www.linkedin.com/pub/jeff-stern/18/bb7/107)

I've sent him a message, so we'll see what happens. Just to be clear, I'm not at all sure this is the right Jeff Stern, but it looks to be at least a strong possibility. And of course a response is not at all guaranteed, as we know.

I believe all my unknowns are from prior to 1996. And I believe we figured out what songs were his by process of elimination. But this would definitely be good news! What made you suspect this was him?

Honestly, just the fact that his name is Jeff Stern and he's a musician lol. And he seems to be the right type of musician too. He's the ONLY Jeff Stern I've been able to find whose a musician.

This week just keeps on getting better!!! This is THE Jeff Stern!!! And he's going to send me his music!!! I don't think he's charging me anything, so if anybody wants it let me know and when I get it I'll send it your way. I suppose PM'ing me your e-mail address would make the most sense.

It sounds like it isn't publicly available, hence the reason Jeff is sending it to Gary.

Bryan, if you search YouTube for Jeff Stern Morning Steps you can find an LF video with that song. No luck with Forward Motion though. Matt is correct, it isn't publicly available. And yes, he is mailing me a CD. I haven't yet received any confirmation from him that he's sent it, so when I'll get it I don't know. But when I do I'll let you all know, and send the songs to anybody who wants them.

I listened to Morning Steps and found it to be a good song. Not to change the topic but on a similar note, have you had any luck tracking down Christopher Francis "C.F." Jones? We wish we could grab ahold of "Walk On"

Morning Steps is definitely one of my faves from the late 90's. Wish I could hear a clip of Fast Forward though. Haven't had luck finding C.F. yet, but I'm working hard on it.

EDIT: I do have an idea when it comes to CF. I noticed, by searching BMI, that he and JEff Stern have something in common. Both are listed with the same publishers, Maui Sun Music and Five String Harp Music. I'm going to ask Jeff if he has any information he could share about CF. Not that he does, but one never knows.

That's excellent! You'll definitely get something there if they share the same publisher. Also his music was used in 1998, and Jones's was used Q1 1999, so there must be some correlation with the two.

Just wanted to add a little something. It turns out that there are, in fact four artists that share those two publishers that I mentioned Stern and Jones had in common. It seems that Steven Saltzman and Dave Morgan have the same two publishers listed in their BMI profiles. I'm really intrigued by this. Is it simply coincidence? Is there something more in common between these 4? I'm hoping Jeff Stern can shed some light.

EDIT: Make that 5 people. Richard Tyznik has the same two publishers.

I remember Tyznik's wife joined the forums years ago and made those songs available. If you do a pattern  on BMI with the numbers, it's likely you'll see them grouped together by the same publishing company. It's the same with Supermax music which is the label Samuel Lincoln/CC Gilmore is on.

As far as I know just two, which were played in April 98.

I received an e-mail from Jeff today. He says he sent the CD out today, so I should have it by Friday or Saturday more than likely.

Also, Matt I have his e-mail address and web address if you'd like to add them to your artist information page. His website is: http://www.jeffsterndrummer.com/ (http://www.jeffsterndrummer.com/). I'll message you his e-mail if your interested.

One other note to add to this...he also mentioned that he is not familiar with the other TWC artists that I mentioned had the same publishing company as him. So much for that idea I guess.   :hmm:

Sorry guys but I haven't gotten the CD yet. I was afraid this would happen. For some reason mail coming from California (where Jeff is) always seems to take an extra day or two. Maybe I'll get the CD on Monday. I'll let you all know.

Great new guys, I DID get the CD today! For some reason it wasn't delivered by the regular mailman with the rest of my mail. So here's the deal..there are 3 songs on the disc, and none are named using TWC's names. Only one of them sound familiar. I think I'll send them to Matt for identification (since I surely have no clue, and since we only knew of 2 songs that TWC used in the first place), and then once I know which song is which i'll send them to those who want them.
Title: Re: Jeff Stern
Post by: lfmusiclover on October 19, 2013, 08:31:57 PM
Well I've heard from Matt, and he does not recognize any of the songs. That means that the song that we thought was Morning Steps is evidently, in fact, not. Which means that getting Jeff's music only created more mysteries, rather than confirming what we thought we already knew.  :hmm:

They did air, I assure you. I wouldn't think that anyone would know Jeff's music better than Jeff himself would. I've sent Jeff a short clip of the song that we THOUGHT was his, and when I hear from him I'll let you all know what he tells me.

The songs are attached to this message for anyone wanting them. Remember, they have Jeff's titles, not TWC's.

I guess I jumped the gun a bit. Sorry about that. Unfortunately several people have made such a comment and meant it. I've worked my butt off for a long time (years) trying to track down Jeff, and when I finally get his music people think the songs are wrong. I would hope that Jeff would know his own music. Could it be possible that maybe (gasp!) WE are wrong? Regardless, I want to hear Jeff's side before I draw any conclusions.

As an added note, Chuck (Buckeyefan) also listened to the songs and didn't recognize them  either. Clearly, something isn't right since three of the most knowledgeable people on this forum (myself, Matt, Chuck) don't recognize the songs. But let's not go making assumptions without knowing the facts.

I would at least hope that we/TWC are wrong indeed if that's the case.. because it could just be a similar incident to the "Pleasant Days" one.

However, I'm not sure if this is the case, but the official TWC playlist (http://www.weather.com/aboutus/television/music/4Q99.html) had the incorrect song/artist with "Pleasant Days"..

So, I received a response from Jeff late last night. He says the song in the clip IS his. HOWEVER, he said it was technically composed by his guitarist. He says the song is called Poco Bahia. He says that it was not included in his BMI material, he was not aware it had aired on TWC, and was never paid for its use. Very interesting stuff indeed. But he says he's going to send it to me when time allows.

I guess we we wrong AND right. It is his music, but its not one of the songs we thought it was.

I remember Sue Hurd of Ficara telling me that she was never paid for TWC's use of her music in the fall of 1996. I also heard a rumor that the guy selecting the music in the late 90s was let go b/c he wasn't reporting what was being used.

I may be wrong, but in a previous forum, (before TWCC/TWCT merged) wasnt there mention of a programmer in the 90's by the name is Greg Piecuch, or something. Maybe he got sloppy with the reporting of the music in the late 90s, which also explains why there are many unknowns during that time frame. On the other note, I am finally glad that song by Jeff Stern was finally tracked down

As luck would have it I have found a Gregory Piecuch who is/was employed by TWC. I'm going to see if he's willing and/or able to give me any information about the music back then. Maybe I can get some information on those unknowns!  B)

Not sure if was the same person, but yes, that was another rumor I heard. I also heard that "Theme For Galilee" by Pete Papageorge wasn't a Christmas song. It was a song for Pete's wife or girlfriend Gailie, and he wasn't too happy that TWC used it during Christmas.

I know I haven't updated this thread in ages, but, well, there hasn't been any news to report. I hadn't heard from Jeff nor received the song from him. Until today that is. I got an e-mail from him saying that he hadn't forgotten to send the song, he's just been having computer problems. So with any luck hopefully we'll have our song soon. On a related note, I did not hear back from any of the Christopher Jones that I contacted, nor have I heard anything from Greg Piecuch. So I'm kinda figuring out what my next move is going to be. But I haven't given up by any means. I'm determined to get ahold of these last few obscure musicians, as well as to identify our ever dwindling list of unknown songs.  B)

Hi everyone! You've been waiting for it, and here it is! Attached is Poco Bahia, as well as another song that Jeff sent called Bubba's Bounce. I do not recognize that song, but thought I'd post it here so that Chuck, Matt, and our other resident experts could confirm for sure that it was not used. I just got these today, so on behalf of Jeff I apologize for the delay. Merry Christmas!!

Title: Re: Jeff Stern

This is merely an educated guess, but I think "Evening's Dance" may be "Morning Steps" his other song featured on TWC in the first quarter of 1998, which would make "Poco Bahia" "Forward Motion". The main reason I stipulate this is because Evening's Dance and Morning Steps deal with a time of day "Evening" and it's alternative title "Morning"; and "Dance" which of course dancing is also stepping. I have no direct video LF evidence of this which I d love to have, but I have a gut feeling we may already have Jeff's other song as well from the earlier posts in this thread. Feel free to correct me if I was wrong on this, but I think we may already know both his songs.

UPDATE: Here is more circumstantial proof that we may already know both of his songs. By the process of elimination using this BMI link: http://repertoire.bmi.com/writer.asp?page=1&blnWriter=True&blnPublisher=True&blnArtist=True&fromrow=1&torow=25&affiliation=BMI&cae=205217510&keyID=329396&keyname=STERN%20JEFFREY%20J&querytype=WriterID (http://repertoire.bmi.com/writer.asp?page=1&blnWriter=True&blnPublisher=True&blnArtist=True&fromrow=1&torow=25&affiliation=BMI&cae=205217510&keyID=329396&keyname=STERN%20JEFFREY%20J&querytype=WriterID)

if you click on the link it will show 14 listings for Jeff Stern. 8 of the songs were for TV production (shown with "BG cues" next to the title). Of the remaining six titles, one ("Beachy") is a duplicate. That leaves with the 5 songs he sent to Gary. Those five songs include Forward Motion, listed as "Fast Forward" which is "Poco Bahia" and the aforementioned "Evening's Dance" which would be Morning Steps.
