20th Anniversary of playlist
« on: October 15, 2012, 06:31:55 PM »
I know that 2 months ago in August is technically the 20-year anniversary of this local forecast music playlist, but this playlist time period was well underway at this time 20 years ago and would continue through the end of March 1993.

I had some favorites that were on that 8/92-3/93 playlist:

Weekend In Monaco - The Rippingtons

Jenny C - Peter Buffett

Indian Summer - The Rippingtons

Lovin You (More) - After Five Jazz

If you are old enough to remember, share some of your favorites from that particular playlist.

All of the Above and always trying to catch the two-time a day only playing of St. Tropez by the Rippingtons.  I still use that song on my WeatherStar emulator  B).  I'll probably chime in on this thread often - it was my senior year in high school.

This is the first playlist where I remember most of the songs. Which makes sense, since this was also the time I started watching regularly. I was in the 7th grade and tuned in when a winter storm was or might be in the area. These are the most memorable for me.

Ballet by David Arkenstone
More Than Words by Tom Barabas
Love Struck, Broad Street by George Howard
Jenny C by Peter Buffett
Weekend In Monaco, Indian Summer, Vienna by The Rippingtons
Struttin' by Bobby Lyle

From the BTF playlist (which I've never been able to fully complete):
Indian Summer by The Rippingtons
The Face On Cydonia by Fowler & Branca
10 West by Brian Bromberg (I still remember the time I accidentally found/identified this)
Just The Way I Feel by George Howard

The first TWC song that I believe that I remember was Kenny G's All In One Night from the October 1995 playlist.

Hakeem: What's up, Jetsons!
Frank Mitchell: Jetsons?
Hakeem: Yeah, you and George got the same haircut.

I remembered songs from the previous lists, but this is the first one I really made an effort to record. The first four months of this list played with 3000 narration on my cable system (as did the previous ones in 1992), then in the first week or two in 1993 I turned on TWC one afternoon and heard the 4000 narration.

Figured out back then that "Caravan" only played at 11:36 pm and "St. Tropez" at 5:36 and 6:36 pm. No idea why they went with that arrangement, but the previous few lists had similar strangeness. Also "Just The Way I Feel" played at 10:57 am, bridging the gap from the morning and afternoon dayparts. There was just enough songs to fill each slot in the list, so you'd hear the same song at the same time each hour.

The list wasn't actually set until about August 20th or so when "Weekend In Monaco" by the Rippingtons was released. Three John Nilsen songs were replaced thereafter.

On November 21st, the local radar premiered on three flavors, with those flavors being rearranged (J K M) plus one other (L). The "I" flavor was dropped around this time with a "D" being shown instead from 5 pm - 2 am at :23. "Cloud Cover" by Barry Coates & The Hats was assigned to this slot (with the 1991/92 narration).

Other BTF songs I can think of:
"And I Think About It All The Time" by the Meeting
"Miles Away" by the Rippingtons
"Seguaro" by David Lanz & Paul Speer

Long run backup songs:
"Dark Passage" by Clifford Marshall Van Buren
"Eyes of a Lost Child" by Kevin Eubanks
"Wednesday's Child" by the Rippingtons
"Quadra's Domain" by Tom Scott

For several years, after obtaining the playlist, I couldn't recall hearing "Just The Way I Feel" in a local forecast. Then Layne told me about the special time it played, and it all made sense. At 9:57 am, I was either in school or asleep!

Although it wasn't until the playlist after this one that really hooked me into LF music, I remember hearing and enjoying the following songs from this particular list:

Ballet - David Arkenstone (most memorable to me)
Indian Summer - The Rippingtons
Broad Street - George Howard

Here is a video from one of those local forecasts from that time, which features one of my favorites from that playlist.

I listened to this playlist not too long ago. I remember I was living in the Carribean, and in an area where there was no cable service. I was recording LFs on cassette tape at that time, and I never got to record the overnight/primetime songs... they remained a mystery to me until I ran into TWCC in 2003.My favorites are

Jenny C - Peter Buffett
Caravan - David Arkenstone
Indian Summer - Rippingtons
Just The Way I Feel - George Howard

I also think of colors when I listen to songs so each TWCX song gets a color theme..six songs on this list have shades of green as color themes since it started as a summer playlist

Another good song from that playlist was "Up To Stay" by Danny Heines. Here is my recording of it. Unfortunately, it's incomplete due to the fact that I taped over it with Andy Griffith.

You're correct about Victor.  I get the feeling he's saying that he remembered hearing it the first time when he browsed through the playlists on TWC Classics.
