Very interesting! B) I can't wait for this STAR to be deployed in East Lansing!
-
Those are some sick shots!
-
Martin, are those actual screenshots, or something you created? If they are actual shots, I have a couple of issues:
1.) I don't mind that the national current conditions bar on the left is still shown, but, since the radar on the bottom left corner is hidden by the local LDL, the "radar" label should be either removed or repositioned on the national feed so that it's no longer indicating a radar that's hidden to those now seeing a local LDL.
2.) Why is the Intellistar HD using the pre-2010 weather icons? That creates a discontinuity with all of the other weather icons shown on The Weather Channel. And, personally, I greatly prefer the newest set of icons. The older ones do look more realistic, but the newer ones remove confusion. For example, I had a hard time telling the difference between rain (white streaks against a grey background) and snow (white dots against a grey background).
3.) The banner underneath the city name is a little confusing. For example, "The Week Ahead" shows current conditions, "Tomorrow" shows the forecast for the upcoming week, etc. It's not a problem to show what's coming next, but that should be clearly differentiated from what's currently being shown.
4.) On the current conditions display, the data covers up the labels ("visibility," for example).
5.) On the week ahead display, the day labels and the colored banners underneath them don't quite match, and the result looks very sloppy.
6.) Where's the clock on the small LDL?
Other than that (whew!), the idea seems to be quite good, and I look forward to the Intellistar HD being deployed in my area... hopefully with a bit more tweaking. :)

Good point. I'll have to bring that to their attention.
2.) Why is the Intellistar HD using the pre-2010 weather icons?
The set was designed specifically for HD. Thats why it looked so crappy on the SD IntelliStar. The IntelliStar 2 will use these icons and the network will continue to use the simplified version. That's just how it is.

Those were mock images. A video of the real thing in action is coming soon.
6.) Where's the clock on the small LDL?
You will see in the video...
-
Interesting that included Teaneck in the LDL recreation (that is the same area where I frequent each year) . I love the new LDL design either way.
-
Here is a video of the 30% LDL in action! I'll have a 16% video shortly...
HD LF 30% LDL (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDOvGjuUshg#ws)
-
now that's impressive
-
Wow - that's pretty awesome.
-
I agree. I think the LDL looks spectacular! Perhaps better than the lf!
-
LDL looks far more polished that the LOT8s at the moment.
However, I don't see the need for the purple, or yet another font being used. It just looks out of place.
-
I love the LDL, damn impressive. What is with the LDA being stuck on Omaha though? Will the LDA be removed?

What do you mean? If you haven't seen the new HD LDL everything with the sidebar is going away. The images above are just to give you an idea
yes that's what I meant, I thought the sidebar was called the LDA.
-
Thanks for your comments, Tyler.
I took a look at the video, and I'm impressed!
-
The lda will remain even with the HD ldl
-
it looks awkward and unmatched with the LDL on. Plus the LDA is only covering the cities for the entire country, not the area that the HD Star serves. In a sense, how will that be useful to viewers?
-
I personally like the LDA behind the local LDL. Although it does ruin the meaning of HD; the way I see it, it could be a resource for travel forecasts although the national radar will be blocked off by a local radar.

I thought this was eventually replacing it http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/7944/newbigldl1.jpg (http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/7944/newbigldl1.jpg)

Not to my knowledge.
-
Geesh, so many LDLs now it's confusing! Only two years ago, there were two main LDLs (XL and IntelliStar).

Heck, I thought the goose laid the golden egg way back in the day when the WeatherStar 4000's LDL started showing the "Today's/Tomorrow's forecast" line! :)
-
I was beyond amazed when I started seeing that translucent bar on the XL. :bleh:

That's what i was thinking when i snapped the pic but hopefully in the future this is used.

The flashiness of it is really cool...but maybe a bit too much. Flying suns and moons, spinning cubes and what have you are a little much. Also, isn't it assumed that when the clock is displayed next to the temp that the temp is the current reading? The flipping between NOW and the temp is not needed. The whole thing looks good but I still prefer the old blue LDL. Simple and not too distracting but still showing pertinent information.

Agreed with the blue LDL. But, I also love this LDL on the I2. ;)
-
On the new LDL the on temperature tab it has forecast for the high and low...there will no longer be the previous days high and low (yesterdays actual) like on the almanac?
-
Will there be ads on the HD LDLs? :dunno: Also, on the "Next 8 hours" part of this big LDL, the icons look too high.

Yes, the small LDL has ads, and the large one will soon have them too as Tyler stated.

There are currently no videos of the small LDL up yet and based on the concepts posted part of the LDL doesnt disappear like how the IS LDL does
-
Tyler, do you have a video of the 16% LDL?
-
16% LDL
HD LDL 16% (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rZF0co0IIw#ws)

Thanks for posting! :thrilled: I like the graphics and animation, but it is kind of distracting in a way, especially with all the flares and stuff.

The LDL just like the Icons have lovers and haters, so we're going to have to live with change.

Its like pixie dust there at the start. That could be reduced a little. Remember TWC is trying to get cable companies to shell out money for something they dont really need. Its gonna have all the bling bling and flashy stuff they can cram in

Eye candy does sell. Remember "Day After Tomorrow" with all its special effects? That's what TWC is banking on with this new IS and the new shiny graphics. People will buy into it.

Oh, yes! That's even a better example.

Thank you, Alex.

One complaint I have for the logo on the IS2 LDL is that it's washed out, like on the national LDLs.

It may be the saturation in the video causing that but if you watch it on an actual HDTV the color has more depth
-
Snapped a few (unfortunately, low res) pictures of the IS2 Alpha and the LDL.
These were just plain shots from my iPod, on which I was watching the stream of TWC on Justin.tv.

All i see is the national LDL/LF
-
That is what this unit is, the IS2 Alpha. Isn't it basically the national feed?
-

First off, that is not the IS2.. second off, where on earth did you get the idea that this was an IS2 alpha? And finally, that is the feed any receiver without an IS2 would see.
-
It isn't? Crap. I guess it is the Beta STAR in New York.
-

The pictures you showed are of the national HD feed without any local Star at all. The LDL and the local forecast are generated at TWC in Atlanta and broadcast throughout the entire country, the same way programming and commercials are. A Star will broadcast OVER the local forecast portion to air a locally-produced local forecast, and an Intellistar will broadcast its own LDL OVER the national LDL.
What you showed has no involvement of any Star at all.
-
As Eric stated in the previous post, you have the national HD forecast, just like all Comcast and Satellite subscribers. When Comcast gets the IS2, only Satellite customers will see the feed you have captured. I sent you a picture of what the IS2 will look like when you get it.
BTW - There is no such thing as a Beta STAR anymore. The Beta has been replaced by the IS2.
Hope this helps!

We still have an Alpha HD Star here on Time Warner in NYC.

I meant Cablevision...sorry!
-
WTF how's that possible? I thiught time Warner carried the satellite feed. We were at a family ocassion in Long Island last summer and when I saw twc HD on their TV, it was the satellite feed and they had Time Warner. I thought cablevision only carried it weird
