As of around midnight central time, the IntelliStar 2 has launched on on two Comcast Tennessee systems: Nashville and Murfreesboro. Stay tuned for details!
-
That's cool! I don't think there's anyone here from the Nashville or Murfreesboro areas though
-
Argh....not Memphis....
I thought it would have been placed in locations that have TWC Fans, so we could give them feedback and stuff.
-
Good luck to the system, and I envy those lucky viewers in Tennessee! I hope the Intellistar HD will come to Massachusetts very soon! :)

That's the headends job :bleh:

I am not sure what gave you that idea. Select markets were picked and the community here will be monitored for feedback. They aren't placing the beta sites based on our location

Yeah they were when they beta tested the current SD Intellistar version back in 2007. tpirfan28's area was one of the headends to receive the upgrade
-
No one here lives in Nashville AFAIK. It would have been nicer if they tested it somewhere where a lot of us live in so we could debug any issues. That's what they did with the IntelliStar v.2 as stated, as well as the original HD STAR in New York.

Yea, that's what made me think that, Martin. :bleh: I knew they had done it before with a previous STAR.
-
In the near future will there be a timeframe to when the beta will end? i know i might be asking too early because the beta just started recently.
-
Yeah they were when they beta tested the current SD Intellistar version back in 2007. tpirfan28's area was one of the headends to receive the upgrade
Correct. Mine might have been pushed toward the top since it was a fairly new unit (installed just a year and a half prior). I couldn't even test this time even if asked because I don't even have TWC HD yet...
-
If TWC really wanted us to debug this STAR, they would have put one in Philadelphia and other places with concentrated TWC fans. It's up to the headend to report any major issues and what not. I am positive that they will take our input into consideration as well :D
-
TWC HD is available in Philly and a lot of its N&W suburbs that have Comcast, including Bensalem.
-
i would of thought Boston was a beta city, they've had TWC HD since it's launch in 2007.
(Boston transitioned in December 2006)
-
What will the IntelliStar 2 look like? I wish they wouldn't change it. :( I am satisfied with the way the IntelliStar is now.

Intellistar 2 is only for HD Viewers. no changes will be made to the SD Intellistar
-
Well perhaps when the Houston and Atlanta versions launch someone here will be able to see it. I am sure there was some reason these locations were chosen.

My thinking is
1. Atlanta to test Traffic
2. Houston to test Marine.

My thinking is...
1.) Boston to test the Intellistar 2
2.) Boston to test traffic
3.) Boston to test marine
4.) Boston to test the LDL

Wrong and wrong. Traffic isn't even built into the STAR yet...

Will there be any other beta cities other than Atlanta and Houston?
-
Doubt it. Three metros should be enough. I believe the original intellistar only had two or three cities during its testing as well.

Does the I2 use FreeBSD and PC hardware like the IntelliStar does?

Does the I2 use FreeBSD and PC hardware like the IntelliStar does?
I am under the impression it uses a completely different program platform. I wouldn't be surprised if we see the next Intellistar SD built on a similar type of platform in the future

Why would there be a next generation Intellistar SD, or any new SD system, for that matter? The day will eventually come when SD is just fazed out altogether.
It's interesting... in Europe, when the HD transition takes place, it takes place. Anyone with an SD TV set can, with a converter or SD cable box/satellite receiver, still watch channels, but they're always presented in widescreen format. The U.S., however, is stuck in some kind of limbo, where there have to be separate SD and HD feeds for everything, which usually means the widescreen HD picture is little more than a square SD picture with "wings" on either side, usually filled with "runoff" from the center part of the screen. I hope the U.S. will someday catch up and make widescreen actually widescreen. Very few U.S. cable/satellite networks do that right now - Fox News and CNBC are the two examples that come to mind off the top of my head.

What are you talking about? HD transition? Can you link me to any such program? Heck in 2008 according to a report on 5% of HDTV owners in Europe had HDTV service. I think you are completely wrong about SD. Its going to be around for a long long long time. First off cable companies make extra money by having "HD" packages. Second it is physically impossible currently for any cable operator to have every SD channel in HD. There isn't enough bandwidth to support it on the cable lines. Considering the Intellistar is nearly 7 years old, its clear the hardware is becoming dated and can't be expected to last too many more years. Granted I am not saying expect a new Intellistar next year but down the road there is bound to be another unit.
-
The cable co can just cheap out and down res TWC HD down to 16:9 SD on the SD channel.
Also what about the weather scan? If that needs new hardware why not make it HD ready / have a SD and HD mode.

I used to live in Europe, so I speak from personal experience. In countries that have already abandoned SD, cable companies don't offer a choice of SD and HD channels. You get only HD channels, which your own equipment will then downconvert to SD. TV programs generally aren't framed to be "SD friendly," as they are in the United States, and the really important aspect is that most Europeans receive television broadcasts not by cable or satellite, but by antenna.
As for your claim of 5% HDTV service in 2008, I don't know what your source is, but it completely contradicts what I personally experienced. Around that time I was in Russia, Finland, Estonia, and the UK, and saw a lot more than 5% HDTV penetration.
As for the Intellistar, yes, it's seven years old, but what does that really matter? Not only is SD supposed to be becoming obsolete, but the XL, 4000, and Jr. are still plugging away, and no one's talking about a major overhaul for them. In fact, the 4000 never had a major overhaul, unless you count the transition from text-only to graphics very early on, the change from static to animated radar, and then the change in the TWC logo. That's all, and they took place a long, long time ago.

As for downconversion, I'm surprised that hasn't happened yet throughout the whole cable industry. I still see a huge number of cable networks that have seperate SD and HD feeds.
I would love to see an HD WeatherScan, but I'm obviously not going to hold my breath. Even though WeatherScan performs a very useful service, it unfortunately seems as though The Weather Channel has put it near the bottom of its priority list, right around changing the entire graphical atmosphere of a WeatherStar 4000 Local Forecast.

Europe and US are two very different regions when it comes to technology as I am sure you are aware. The technology used to transmit the signal is flexible enough to support such large data loads. Here the cable companies (and certainly not the government) will never be willing to implement mass changes in how media is delivered. Verizon and AT&T are pumping money into fiber, the rest of the cable companies are desperately upgrading their technology to keep up. In fact the government wants to completely scrap OTA to free up spectrum as outlined in the Broadband Plan. http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2010/02/tv-stations-asked-to-yield-500mhz-of-spectrum-for-broadband.ars (http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2010/02/tv-stations-asked-to-yield-500mhz-of-spectrum-for-broadband.ars)
When it comes right down to it.... no it doesn't matter too much for the Intellistar but you have to factor in one important thing.... $$$$$! The XL still had great untapped potential as we have seen from such users as cc17926 who have modified it to do some amazing things (see youtube). The IS had only marginal software gains when it launched. The Weather Channel has a quite extraordinary amount of these units out there. Its a big money making part of TWC and they are going to keep with it! Same reason as Apple releases another marginal upgrade in iPod/iPhone each year. The older stars are only around for those select headends that didn't want to make the upgrade. Most will as seen before.
The fact is in the United States, SD is farrrrrrr from over! Our huge geographic region, monopolistic cable companies, and limits in technology will prevent an all HD transition.
-
Another thing about going all HD and killing SD is that there's lack of bandwidth. From what I understand, an OTA station can only have one HD subchannel, usually consisting of the main broadcast.
-
What goes around comes around. Europe was a decade and a half behind the U.S. in adopting color television, and some European countries didn't get color until the 1980s. On the other hand, the U.S., specifically for the reasons mentioned above, is barely adapting HD technology.

Same thing with the damn cell phone networks and internet speeds. Coverage and speeds in Europe are amazing.

And incoming calls/text messages are free. It kills me knowing I have to pay in the United States even when I'm the recipient.

Ugh I know!Text Messages Cost $1310 per Megabyte. Its crazy :P We have gone way off topic but I like it :D
-
Is there any changes we are going to look forward to in the beta? or is it a "what you see is what you get" type of scenario?
-
Ugh I know!Text Messages Cost $1310 per Megabyte. Its crazy :P We have gone way off topic but I like it :D
In the U.S., I have Net10, so I pay 5¢ to send/receive a text message. In Russia, I had Tele2, and paid 45 kopeks (2¢) to send a text message and nothing to receive. For calls: 10¢ a minute in the U.S. to send/receive and 95 kopeks (4¢) a minute to send. So, the difference isn't huge - both Net10 and Tele2 are budget carriers, but I do miss not having to pay for incoming calls/messages.
Yeah, we're off topic, but so long as forum management doesn't yell at us :nono:, I don't think we're hurting anyone. :whistling: :smoke2:

You must have a steal! I have to pay twice as much for half a kilobyte

Tampa resident? Let me know when it launches since I only have DirecTV in Tampa. :)
-
Isn't the alpha star only in New York City? you're probably seeing the HD Satellite LF.
-
Your post excited me! But I turn on Twc hd just to see the national lf... :(
(I live just north of Nashville, Google Hendersonville, TN)

Its only being tested in Nashville and Muffreesboro ;)

I know but I am really close to Nashville

I actually shot you an email to check when it came out. Darn. I was hoping you were just close enough

The HD star is designed to cover wider areas. If he lives close by to Nashville, which he does, its not out of the question that he could have seen it. Apparently not at this time anyway

According to this

The localized Weather Channel HD has now launched in post-transition areas. As mentioned earlier in the thread, Nashville is currently conducting beta testing for the weather channel with these new devices. There are currently only two devices being tested, so all local weather forecasts will either be for Murfreesboro or Nashville.
-
Am I correct that the "post-transition" areas are Nashville and Murfreesboro? To me the post led me to believe that the new IStar2 boxes would be sent out but for some reason still show either Nashville or Murfreesboro.

Post Transition = Digital Migrated Areas so based off that post i would say that a state will get about 2 or 3 Istar2's in a given area to cover that region.
example (Boston,New Bedford,Worcester) for MA.
that's my thought.

Usually post transition areas mean nodes and areas that had to wait to get certain HD channels while there were network upgrades done. It simply means a wider area will see those IS2s but they will only display those locations.

I wonder what the progress has been with the Beta so far.

Even though I currently don't have HDTV, I can't wait for the IntelliStar 2 to be released to the majority of head-ends.

Is it possible for the I2 to display five hours of Rad/Sat data like the original intellistar does? IMO, three hours is rather short for an area so zoomed out.

lol like srsly...even the Alpha HD STAR in nyc (which I'm seeing right now) won't get upgraded for a while
-
But a month is ever so long, Martin. I want the IS 2 now!! :bleh: That's the problem with our society: we always want things now. Well, I guess this principle applies better to cars and other stuff, but I guess I don't mind the wait. It's definitely worth it to me.

I think I heard something about this continuing in October...maybe I'm wrong though.

Good chance. I mean I don't expect the STAR team to rush the product thats not ready out the door.

It has been reported the Istar 2 is down in Nashville and Murfreesboro to my thinking "accommodate for the missing narration fixes."

Yes the cable company has a lease with twc, thanks for reminding me curt i meant to say "get" not buy.
-
So I randomly checked out TWC Media Kit and watched the "Local on the 8s HD" video, and it jogged my memory that there were supposed to be airport delay reports and a pollen forecast on the IS2. Now, I know this video was created a couple of years ago, but are there any plans to do like what they said?

Im sure its possible  the alpha NYC Star didnt get the screen until later iirc

No it came with the delay reports
-
Those were added in December 2008 ;)
just remember though that anything graphic-wise shown on twcmediakit isnt final and is designed as a draft and animated in AE
-
So when will the airport delays product be added? :dunno:
They've already got it on the NYC one, but when will it be added to the Nashville HD STAR's?
We have no idea. That's why I asked. ;)

EDIT: Done

Does anyone have any ideas when the IntelliStar 2 will be rolled out to all markets?
-
I have no clue, to tell you the truth. I don't think TWC stated when the IStar 2 will officially begin rolling out.
-
Tyler will hopefully let us know when it's about to rollout.
-

Yes, we will definetely hear when more "roll-outs" happen. Tyler and a few other members are very good at letting us know. So everyone just needs to be patient. ;)

I wonder how the beta is going, things have been very quiet lately.

I kind of expected we weren't going to see much happen very quickly
-
Yall sure are some impatient people. <_< Yall act like they will roll out the new Stars across the country next week.
Testing these things out will take weeks, if not months. We're dealing with computers here and they're not perfect.

A second STAR is now live in Jackson, TN.

Where did you find out?

Everything is moving nicely. I wonder when they'll have an IStar 2 here in Metro Detroit.

I hope they'll have one in Chicago, but I won't be able to see it since I have TWC in SD on DirecTV, and no one I know has HD cable.

Who said anything about Knoxville? And there is no particular order as to how or where they are going live - so Memphis isn't next.

I think you mean third, since Murfreesboro and Nashville already have the Intellistar2 in place in their headends.

I meant Murfreesboro, and it looked as though they were starting in Central Tennessee and moving their way to the West....it was just a guess. :dunno:
-
Yeah take it easy... anyways last I heard Houston and Atlanta are the next markets.
-
Atlanta obviously doesn't surprise me. In fact, I'm surprised these BETA testings don't start in Atlanta. Do they want to try different US cities to avoid favoritism or the same view from the same city all the time.

I wonder why Tennessee is getting all the first IStar2 action...

I don't think there's really a need to test it here when most cable subscribers here are with Comcast who has yet to add TWCHD except for only in the suburban towns like Marietta.
-
I'm also surprised they didn't launch the istar2 in NYC, after all they launched their own alpha HD Star.
-
Yeah take it easy...
Excuse me? Did I say something wrong? :dunno:

A second STAR is now live in Jackson, TN.
Where did you find out?
Trust me when I say this... if Tyler says something its true ;)
Atlanta obviously doesn't surprise me. In fact, I'm surprised these BETA testings don't start in Atlanta. Do they want to try different US cities to avoid favoritism or the same view from the same city all the time.
I believe its random markets but thats not confirmed.
-
I'm pretty sure TWC starts with the markets that have the most HD service available, which is why they may have started with Nashville first.
-

That doesn't many any sense at all. Why would it matter?
-
Like martin said it will most likely be random, TWC must notify the next Headend in line which is what probably happened to Jackson, TN
-
Believe it or not, it's at random folks.

Well sorry... it was just a guess. :hmm:
-
I don't really expect this to launch in the next couple of months.

Believe it or not, it's at random folks.
They need to randomly land on Seattle ;p
-
I've had an idea for the past couple of days. There may be some cable headends that:
1. Don't have a WeatherScan channel, or wish to start one with their current Intellistar
2. Are interested in HD local forecasts
3. Would rather maintain as few WeatherStar units as possible
I was watching a baseball game which took the HD feed, and through a process called "Active Format Description", or AFD, letterboxed the feed on the SD version of the channel. Some AFD metadata was sent with 4x3 SD commercials, so these ads displayed normally on standard def TVs -- there weren't any black bars on all four sides (also known as "windowboxing").
It's not the only place I've seen this happen. I've also seen it on several other channels. There has been enough of a trend in the cable industry to use a single master feed for HD and SD, that The Weather Channel should look into enabling a similar, entirely optional, feature on the Intellistar 2, for headends who are interested.
I don't know if the Intellistar 2 has an SD output of some kind, but hopefully one can be retrofitted for cable headends who are interested. Also, the text graphics would likely need to be tweaked so they're legible on SD sets.
-

What?! Outrageous! It has to be a TWC conspiracy against us.
/me puts on tin foil hat

i got a reply from a TWC sales rep saying
Deployment of the HD Star has just begun. Roll-out is on a first come first serve basis so the systems that launched the national feed first will get their equipment first.
So it seems those areas that acquired TWC HD 1st is the ones supposed to get it first and which is maybe the case with those Tennessee Headends.

This isn't necessarily true. There are many factors going in to who gets the HD STAR first, and this is only one of those factors.
I can confirm that COX Cleveland has their HD STAR, as well as a few small towns that have Blue Ridge Communications. There is also one small cable provider in central PA (I can't recall the name) that has their STAR as well.
-
So your saying that the small provider like "Blue Ridge" gets the star first before the big cahuna Comcast?
that seems weird a small area would get the IS2
-
Who requested equipment first, location configurations, diversity and testing of locations, headend readiness, further TWC testing
I am sure its all based on a variety of those factors and more. Tyler can you confirm they are starting to role them out nationwide and if its still in beta? Ive seen BS from their sales team like this before.

It is still in beta - there are still things that need to be worked out. But it is slowly rolling out.
-
i also got in the reply that the earliest Timeframe is by the end of this year. but with this year dwindling to an end i take that as a grain of salt. i won't be surprised if my area gets it either Q1 or Q2 2011
-
Can you find out whether or not the large LDL is discontinued, or if it's just on hold due to the many impending storms?
-
i won't be surprised if my area gets it either Q1 or Q2 2011
Thats probably an optimistic statement.
-

I would think the Small LDL is being tested on all shows, but i might be wrong. Especially because of the period the LDL has been in a state like this since monday.
-
Another note to add. When you speak to anyone is any type of sales department they aren't necessarily going to tell you the truth. They are going to say whatever it takes to make their product or service seem fantastic and sugar coat any problems with it. I would advise against bothering the TWC Sales department with questions like the ones above.

But you have to think it was worth a shot to see if the sales would give somewhat of a definitive answer due to the very sluggish progress of the beta.

I'm with Martin. Don't bother TWC with emails like that when you have insiders (like me and Martin) to tell you exactly what is going on.

Nah its perfectly ok! We are just saying don't fill their inbox with all types of questions. I didn't know if Mike was implying that you should ask them about the ldl. Thats all ;)

nope i didn't ask TWC about the ldl (if thats what you were implying) and i certainly do not fill TWC's inbox's with all sorts of questions
i was just thinking it might be in some sort of testing because it was not showing any of the of the LDAs on the HD end.

Officially, the LDL hasn't been discontinued. That's all I can say at this point.

Interesting on the ldl situation as well. :hmm:

The IS 2 looks great! It's out where I live now, and I think Jim's narrations are really good. At first I thought it was a little strange, but they are definitely sick (meaning totally awesome). I love those "old" icons too.
I know I'm not the only one that sees an HD STAR in a place other than Nashville, right?
-
So, umm....Tyler and Martin....you know I'm a good guy....ya wanna convince TWC to get the IStar 2 to South Bend on 11/10.....? :)
/TWC HD incoming on 11/10
-
Wait, is the IS 2 out in other places other than Nashville? I'm seeing it right in front of me in Louisiana. I'll get some pics up later.

Yep its creeping out into other places slowly! If you can get pics/video we would love to see! :)

I accept bribes :P
-
If I could refer to the IS2 launch date conversation, I did ask FPB a while back (Just before it launched) when I might see the IS2 (I did kinda write it as a side-note) they said "either late this year or early next year" and something about "smaller cable companies being last" unfortunately, I lost the e-mail when I cleaned out my inbox. I'm not counting on "this year" more than likely my guess would be March-April for my area.
-
I accept bribes :P
I...uh...have $2 and an expired Easy Mac coupon...good enough?
-
Martin, I'll make you a sandwich every day if you convince TWC to put the IntelliStar 2 in Chicago. Is that good enough?

Hey Martin! Could you convince TWC to put an IS2 in Monroe, MI (Comcast) so I can see it over at my grandma's apartment? I'll mail you 20 bucks! :P
P.S. If an IS2 is put in Comcast Monroe, please do not request one to be put in Monroe Charter right away, I still want to enjoy the original IntelliStar for a few more months with my cable provider. :P

The IS2 will not affect SD viewership
-
Ok, I've been confused all this time? So if an IS2 is installed, would you be able to watch it on the SD channel or HD channel? And does it replace the original IntelliStar, (like how an XL replaces a 4000...)? Sorry about my misunderstanding.
-

STARs dont replace STARs unless a headend upgraded to the next generation
The IS will be on SD and the IS2 will be on HD
-
Oh, okay. Thanks Zach! :)
Therefore I would like an IS2 in Comcast and Charter, that would be great!

I know what you meant but thats confusing how you worded it. An Intellistar will not be replaced by an Intellistar2. The SD unit wont be replaced until TWC develops a new SD system.

I'm guessing that it's going to be a long time before TWC develops any new SD system, right?
-
I'm honestly not sure there will even be a new SD system. Why bother at this point?

cause technology advances practically everyday.

cause technology advances practically everyday.
But why should The Weather Channel spend money and resources on developing a new SD Star when standard television has, at least in the opinion of the government, become obsolete? Even cable/satellite operators aren't going to be required to carry them for much longer (but probably will, at least for the foreseeable future, since HDTV sets are quite expensive).

Well that may be true, it's not gonna be easy getting everyone to switch to HDTVs anyway, cheap or expensive. We know how hard it was getting people to get converter boxes for the digital transition....but also the bigger size HDTVs (40 in. up) are expensive, but the ones I've seen under 32 in. are reasonable to me imo. Mine was under $300, but since we were getting it through Walmart the shipping and taxes sent it up to around $320. Sorry about jumping off topic then, I just wanted to add that part in.

Standard definition is not obsolete but analog is. The day you see the FCC ban 640x480 broadcasting is when SD will vanish ;)

720x480... But I don't see that ever happening any time in the near future (10+ years)
-
is there still any interest in the IS2? the thread has been dead lately
-
Unlikely. Haven't heard anything about it. Not that many people I know know about TWC or are interested in it (outside of this forum).
The only thing wrong with the IS2 is that Jim Cantore raises his voices weirdly when reading the wind speed in the 36 hour forecast, and sometimes, there's no text on the 36 hour forecast. Other than that, it's pretty good.
And for those of you who use emulators, the IS2 background moves, which will make it harder to emulate.
-

It'll probably regain once more headends install the IS2. I'd wait until the end of the year

I have a feeling that you'll need to wait even longer than that. I'm no expert with STARs, but I know that testing phases for anything new take a really long time. I'm sure Martin or Tyler will let us know when they hear something new.

The FCC has no power to ban a resolution. It will die the day the cable companies decide they need to ditch the SD channels to free up bandwidth. Cable companies are going to have a rough time ahead

As Patrick said, it will take some time. Think XL and IntelliStar.
-
Tyler btw is having trouble getting on the site since the move. Nothing new that I have heard from him or anyone else. Slowly rolling out but its likely going to be many months before most people get it, if they get it at all. Remember too that your cable company has to actually request it.
-

Is that because cable companies already have the local forecast on the SD version of the TWC? I'm hoping that Time Warner decides to get it because I like watching the HD version but I have to flip to the SD version for the local forecast.

Probably! Plus cable companies have to pay for STARs. In the awesome economy and with cable companies struggling to upgrade their aging networks, I imagine some wont want to pay for it.

It's about money. It costs money, and no small money at that, to install a WeatherStar system. Since the SD channels already have a WeatherStar (I believe it's even a requirement that every cable operator that carries The Weather Channel have a WeatherStar, or at least have access to a nearby one), it's obviously a lower priority for them to get a second WeatherStar for the HD feed. For the cable company, so long as it costs less for them, they really have no problem with you flipping from the HD channel to the SD channel (or to Weatherscan, also SD) for the local forecast. Or they assume people will be happy with the national local forecast, or simply won't notice the difference at all. The casual viewer probably couldn't care less, assuming he even knew what was going on in the first place.
-
Knowing how jammed packed the IS2 is i'd imagine TWC will be getting all sorts of requests from Comcast Headends.
-
I saw yesterday that Midcontinent Communications in Moorhead MN / West Fargo N.D. now has an Intellistar 2 HD with Local on the 8s in HD.
-
Again, with the whole money issue, I'm really shocked the Cox headends in Lafayette and Baton Rouge, Louisiana, already have the IS 2. Seems like pretty random and small metros to actually need The STARS so early, if at all. I'm surprised the cable providers requested it. Nevertheless, I enjoy seeing it on a daily basis. I like how crystal clear the old IS icons look--they're very easy to differentiate on my T.V. Again, I'll get some clips up in better quality when I get the chance. I'm so dang lazy sometimes. :P
-
It pretty much depends on the market. Cox in Baton Rouge has been increasing their customer base ever since they got the franchise contract several years ago. I don't know Lafayette's cable provider, but I'm sure they've been increasing their customer base too. Both markets are growing.

Interesting STAR ID... 99910... wonder what that means...
-
Thanks for sharing! :) I wonder if/when the IS2 id's will hit 100000...
-
It's so awesome! If only there was a drooling smiley… :P
Just a few questions:
1.) Does the narration in the beginning ever say, "Currently, the temperature is…" instead of "Currently in our area…"?
2.) Is there a version of the almanac that has record temps instead of moon phases like on the IS?
3.) Have there been any bugs?
Otherwise, you're lucky to have an HDTV and the IS2. The STAR ID is interesting; it skips from starting with 2 on the IS to starting with 9. 99910 does sound interesting for one.
-
2.) Is there a version of the almanac that has record temps instead of moon phases like on the IS?
I personally haven't seen it in any of the videoclips I've encountered so far. Either it hasn't been implimented yet, or it simply wasn't included in the HD Star. Personally, I prefer the temperature information to the moon information. The SD Intellistar in my area uses only the temperature page. I haven't seen a moon phases page in years and years, actually!
3.) Have there been any bugs?
There was a videoclip posted somewhere (in this forum, maybe?) with a couple of visible bugs. Since this is new technology still in the beta stage, I'm sure it's guaranteed that there will be bugs.
-

1. From what I have noticed, Jim says "Currently in our area..."
3. I have noticed a few mis-ques and choppy animation/voice clips but **I think** it will get better once the hardware gets setup and the team can focus on updates and what-not.

The IntelliStar in my area only showed the temp page last time I saw it (circa 2008).

Oh, I'd also like to mention that I'm taking these videos on my Droid X since I don't have a tuner built into my computer. Sorry for the quality/shakiness/poor audio!

the quality is perfect imo thanks again for uploading these.

At least when I asked FPB, they said between the end of this year to early next (at least here).

Still don't know here. Comcast still has the national HD feed and Charter doesn't even have TWCHD in my area yet...
-
According to that person who created the IS2 case design, there are a bunch of units out in Pennsylvania, but Levittown's IS2 has yet to debut.
-
I can confirm NYC still has the HD Alpha Star as i saw it on Tuesday so I don't know when that will be updated nor the rest of the New Jersey units.

I wish there was a timeframe to look forward to for a Rollout.
But it is being rolled out

At least its still rolling out, hopefully i get it by april/may 2011 because i got TWC HD April 28th 2010.
-
Also, I caught a still of an actual sponsored ad in the left corner instead of just TWC's products.
I find it funny that the USPS is sponsoring a TV show while they currently have a $238 million dollar budget shortfall. Fail.

I can't wait for FiOS to aquire an IntelliStar 2. From the looks of that STAR system, I like more then the IntelliStar and the WeatherSTAR XL.

Is there anything wrong with the IS2 lately? The day I was planning on recording a clip with my DVD Recorder, the IS2 was not working. It hasn't been on for a few days now, which is bumming me out. Does anybody know if they're all having problems or if it's my local one not running at the moment?

Mark's IS2 in Grand Forks is working fine, so it's probably just your particular one.
-
Hmm.. That's a bit unfortunate. My friend says that the one in Baton Rouge is also not running. I hope the Cox cable headends didn't decide to take them off or something.
-
Does anyone know where else Cox has the HD star at? I noticed Cox will be adding TWC HD to Topeka's lineup and was wondering if maybe Topeka is getting the HD Star too. Unfortunately we have U-Verse...but we might be getting a few more HD TVs and with U-Verse, I think you can only have so many HD feeds or something, so a call to Cox may be in store soon!

your area will get it but it might be awhile. Tyler might have a better answer than me but TWC works with the Cable Co to add the channel, when the channel is indeed added there is an open timeframe on when the star will be added (considering the IS2 is still in beta as i write this.)

The IS2 here for Moorhead, MN (West Fargo, ND) is appearing on TWCHD just fine. Though my provider is the same one that is in Grand Forks, ND.

Does your unit down there look very similar to our setup here in GF?

There is no guarantee that any headend will get the IS2. It is a luxury item in the cable world and up to the individual/regional company to pick it up.

So why are headends required to have an SD star, but not an HD one? Or is even that requirement gone?
I suppose that when TWC stops broadcasting separate SD and HD feeds (whenever that will be), then the HD will be made mandatory?
-
There are so many technical issues at the headends that some headends may never get the HD STAR.

That sucks, but at least some who do have the luxury to have one can enjoy it.
-

That's not even remotely fair. And what about the supposed rule that all headends are supposed to have a Star? As I said, the seperate SD and HD feeds will have to end eventually, unless U.S. broadcasters think they can keep up dual feeds forever.
-
Hold the phones. Topeka is getting TWC HD? Where did you see that at? I've been requesting it since it came out and my friend at Cox was gonna bring it up in their meeting a couple weeks ago but never got back to me.

I was just implying you might get it if cox did like an analog crunch or something like that, sorry to bring your hopes up :(

No, kswx29 said he saw Cox Topeka was getting TWC HD and I was wondering if he read that online somewhere or saw a scroll somewhere or something?

I seen it on the County Commission Agenda. Cox always notifys the County Clerk's office when they make Channel Line-up changes.

You just made my night. I haven't ever been able to find where they post that stuff though. I knew they had to inform them of that stuff, just wasn't sure where. Thank you! Happy birthday to me, I guess... we get it two days before my birthday.

County Commission Agendas can be seen at: http://www.snco.us/commission/agendas.asp (http://www.snco.us/commission/agendas.asp)
You will have to let me/us know if Topeka does get an HD Star.

I wonder what the first graphical update after the rollout of the IS2 would be like. Maybe new graphics, like a new background.
-
I wonder what the first graphical update after the rollout of the IS2 would be like. Maybe new graphics, like a new background.
I'm guessing there won't be any updates in that department for a long time. I'm pretty sure their main concern is getting companies to purchase the units while they attempt to get the bugs ironed out (which there is a plethora of to this day). That would be my guess.
-

What kind of technical issues? Is this why Comcast in Philly doesn't have the HD STAR yet?

No, that's not what I mean. I don't mean a graphical update right when it's launched, but a few years later, like when the XL received its first major graphical update in 2001 and the IS getting its first major graphics update in 2007 (not counting the changes in 2005).

Sorry for the double post.
Is the IS2 in NYC an actual STAR at the NYC Cablevision headend or just TWC's feed?
-
Sorry for the double post.

It's just a feed coming from TWC, IIRC.
-
No, it's an actual unit.
-
Just got TWC HD turned on by Cox Kansas here in Topeka but no Intellistar 2 yet.
-
Intellistar 2 just activated in Topeka. Data not available for anything so it JUST came on in the last 5 minutes. Will take video when it loads.

Awesome! can't wait to see your clips
-
Can't wait to see the IS2! I wonder what the IS2 looks like with no data. You should get clips of that if you can.
-
I'll go back on my DVR and record the first time it came on with no to little data and then the full lower bar and total local forecasts. I'm recording it for hours so I'll get as much as I can. Just sucks 'cause I'll have to do it with my iPhone video and upload it so it's gonna be shakey. :(

Quality shouldn't matter, Congrats on your area getting the IS2
-
Here are a few interesting videos for you that I was able to catch! I have seen a few reports of "no data" on LDL observations. Nothing too exciting, just orange or gray text (depending which information is missing) saying No Data Available. Enjoy!

Looks like my area isn't getting the IS2 for awhile :hmm:
We are working with Comcast to find a technical solution to some compatibility issues we have with their network. Hoping to have it resolved sometime in the first half of 2011. Nothing right away however. Sorry.
Some other good news is Providence, RI Cox Added the IS2 today right when TWC HD launched 12/15/10 on their systems across RI

The IS2 isn't compatible with some newer headend upgrades. I suppose its ok to say that now that the above statement was made. Mostly it appears to only effect large head ends

I found this while searching around Google. Shows the new logo for the IS2, and some more stuff.
link removed
EDIT: It looks like a website where cable headends apply for the IS2.

Yes!! I am hoping we are switching back to Cox soon!! Don't get me wrong I love U-Verse but we you are only allowed so many HD streams and recording can be a #$#*@ sometimes. Plus I want all of my local channels and WxScan and etc. back!! I will be heading over to a friends house later and will probably have a video of the IS2!!!

Cincinnati Bell installed theirs around 7 PM tonight. The channel was unavailable during the install.

The Cablevision headend in New York City finally upgraded their HD Alpha Star to the IS2!
-
Hmm, sorry to jump off topic a tad, but I checked my tv guide and I now have TWCHD, I wonder when they added it...

Because I figured atleast someone would try to buy there own IS2....and then admins would get mad for giving a link without permission or something. IDK
-
As mentioned above, the exclusive NYC HD Star is now upgraded to the IS2. Looks nice in person.
-
Sorry I still haven't put up video of our IS2. Time constraints suck. I'll get them up hopefully tonight. Lots of flavors, etc to get recorded off my DVR before tomorrow when I get the new whole home DVR installed. If I don't post them tonight, they'll be up tomorrow.
EDIT: Uploading some videos to YouTube. Links in the Intellistar2 video forum.
-
Don't have TWC HD yet here in Marlton, but it should be added once they finish with the digital transition here in the coming months. As of today, STILL no IS2 in Bensalem. <_<
-
Well I got a video of Topeka IS2!! Very nice!! I'm uploading it now but youtube is thinking it's going to take an hour to upload so I will post a link later when ever it gets done uploading.

Still the Alpha version here in NYC on Time Warner......
Any chance of posting a video (even if taken with a camera)? :)

What i get from that statement is the current network is incompatible with IS2 (Some Comcast headends did not initiate the World Of More Network Updates yet) while other headends across Massachusetts finished the WOM updates from August 09 - June 2010.
what i'm trying to say is the IS2 will be fully compatible when Comcast finishes their WOM/Project Calvary Digital Transition across their whole Spectrum from New Hampshire to Washington State.

I must say, for a 1920x1080 resolution, there sure is a lot of wasted screen real estate on the IS2...

That would be correct.
Also, is the IS2 still technically in "BETA"?

Yes it is. I think it'll be out of beta once it is available nationwide, probably by next year, but we don't know for sure.
-
Visiting family. New IS2 here in Eastern Suffolk County Long Island, NY (Cablevision).

It seems the majority of cable companies except for Comcast have the IS2 installed for their select headends. Anyone know if comcast plans to roll out the IS2 next year?

It might be awhile because other Comcast Headends would have to Convert to Digital in order for the IS2 to be compatible.

Thats what i got from the reply i posted earlier "First Half 2011" and i can't explain why other Carriers have the IS2 earlier than Comcast i wish i knew the answer to it.

Ok, so I haven't been keeping up with TWC as I used to but this morning as I'm walking through the living room my dad had it on and I looked at the LOT8s and I thought "That's different" I checked and sure enough we got the IS2!! I just checked my recordings for the LAT48s and I captured it so I'll have some video of mine up soon!

Fully...there are no analog channels...you hook up an antenna, you get nothing.

Thats OTA... how about when you hook your comcast line directly into your TV with no box? do you get channels?
-
Insight Cable here is completely digital. No Analog channels at all and need a cable box now to get channels. I highly doubt we'll get the IS2 anytime soon though since we still have the XL lol.

Yes, I get channels. I guess we would technically still be analog if it comes to that.

Comcast here in Pleasantville is also all Digital. They eliminated their analog stuff last year and just recently got TWC HD added to our lineup.

Please someone in NYC get a recording of the IS2 during the blizzard Sunday-Monday. Pleassseeeee.

Taken with a camera, not a capture.....
282 mb and not finished uploading yet.....
100 miles east of NYC
Now, and not in the heart of the Blizzard
Something was blocking the TV near TWC logo when I recorded....

I was wondering the same thing, actually. I have yet to see the alert bulletin page in the LOT8s, just on the LDL after the crawl has finished. I hope it gets fixed soon!

The IS2 is getting installed pretty quickly now. Hopefully we'll see a lot more in the coming months.

I think so, in one of ajatwister's videos Jim said "A Heat Advisory is in effect."

I really hope so. I enjoy watching the HD feed, but I find it a little inconvenient to have to switch to the SD channel or Weatherscan for the local forecast.

Your definition and my definition of quickly differ significantly
-
Anyone else notice the new "L-bar" during long form programming? It's different than it was a couple days ago. I noticed it tonight during the 2010 weather lookback. I'll post video tomorrow after Storm Stories / I get home from work. If my new DVR records it like it's supposed to. :/

The weather bulletin is not narrated, right?
No, it definitely *is* narrated

I still don't get why the IS2 has the old icons.
It's been mentioned in this forum before. The icons used in the HD Star were originally developed for HD. However, they were also used in SD, but the results didn't look as expected in standard definition, which is why they were changed to the icons currently used in both the SD feed (national & Intellistar) and the national HD feed. However, since this particular set of icons was developed specifically for HD, that's the set that is being used for the HD Star.

From what I was told thats not quite it. The original icons were used on SD before the HD launch. The new icons were launched but apparently look terrible on the HD STAR so they just used the old ones
-
Either way, I like the "old" flipbooks that are on the IS2 now instead of the cheezeballs on the IS and various maps used on TWC. :D
-

This is completely off topic (sorry), but I'm assuming the terms "flipbooks" and "icons" mean the same thing. I've just never heard the term "flipbook" before until Mark used it.
-
Now I agree with you there, tuez13. I know they're just icons, but I have a little sentimental attachment to them because those were the ones that I saw when I began to watch TWC again. I think the new ones just look too cheap to be on the IS, but that's why there's the IS2. Except for Jim's narrations, I really like the job well done on the IS2.
-
Yeah, I agree with tuez13 as well, I like the old icons much better than the new ones currently on TWC's SD LF. The old ones just have the realistic feel to them, which I really like when weather icons look like that :) But I'm growing on the new ones as time goes by and I get used to them.
This is completely off topic (sorry), but I'm assuming the terms "flipbooks" and "icons" mean the same thing. I've just never heard the term "flipbook" before until Mark used it.
Flipbook's are basically single images of the icons combined together to make that animated effect of that one icon. Kinda hard to explain, I'm sure someone else on here can explain better than me.

This is completely off topic (sorry), but I'm assuming the terms "flipbooks" and "icons" mean the same thing. I've just never heard the term "flipbook" before until Mark used it.
Yep! Sorry. lol I used to work on weather computers when I designed graphics for television and all the computers from Weather Central refer to the weather icons as flipbooks. Some of the flipbooks are 30 images played in one second, some are 60 images played in two seconds (by default). That's what gives the icon its motion i.e. rotating sun, falling rain, etc. Your explanation, Robert, was quite right! Just no apostrophe since they're not owning anything ;) lol
I hope they keep the HD flipbooks the way they are until they design another set to replace the cheezeballs :D

Thanks for posting, but holy **** does that look cold. :brr: :brr:
Interesting how TWC has "New Year's Eve" and "New Year's Day" as the day indicators on the Local Forecast. I'm pretty sure that was never the case on the regular IS.
-
It had Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, as well. Is anybody with IS2 having problems with TWC HD going off air? It's done it twice in the past two weeks and takes a couple calls to Cox to get it back on.
-
Anyone else just getting the national HD feed? IS2 here in Topeka has been out for hours now.
-

Maybe they're making modifications to it? It is still in beta testing, after all.
-
Just wondering, which flavor has the non-text based LF?
-
My IS2 is still up and running fine...of course I didn't see earlier today so I can't confirm whether it was a widespread outage or just your box. I hope it comes back up, soon!
-
It came back last night. It's been having a lot of cueing issues lately too. Oh well.
-
if only Comcast could post in the next bill (January or later) that the IS2 is coming to my area that would be sweet
i know it's a longshot but i can dream can't i? :bleh:

No Alex u may not dream :P

Thanks, Mark, for giving us a good preview of what we'll see on TWC in hopefully a couple years. B)

How does the IS2 narrate subzero temps? Does it read them as "minus (number)˚" like on the IS?
-
How does the IS2 narrate subzero temps? Does it read them as "minus (number)˚" like on the IS?
Correct. It sounds funny because 90% of people say "(temp) below zero" instead of "minus (temp)" but it works. The IS2 team needs to record Cantore again doing the teen numbers because they sound too close to other numbers: i.e. 16 sounds like 60 or 14 sounds similar to 40.

Is the HD STAR beginning to roll out on more Comcast systems? It seems to only be rolling out on smaller cable providers at this point.

1st half of 2011 was the last response i got for Comcast HD Headends.

The HD STAR rollout is happening on a headend by headend basis, and not related to the cable company itself.

If that's the case, then why do they seem to be avoiding Comcast headends? So far I've seen no HD STARs in any Comcast headends other than the Nashville area.
-
It's not that they are avoiding Comcast, its just a compatibility issues. Sorry, but I can't really get into it.

Okay... is there at least any guarantee that there will be a nationwide rollout of IS2, or is it likely, or at least possible, that some headends will simply never get one (or be able to use one, thus precluding getting one)?

Simply from his statement earlier it's a Headend to Headend Basis, so think of it as those areas who really need one would get one (if there are no obstacles blocking that installment) in which Comcast's Cable Network is from to my knowledge "Incompatible with the IS2 at this time" which halts a Installation on any Comcast HD headend altogether for the present time.
-
Here are a few videos! First, my IS2 had radar data issues again until the STAR Team fixed it again along with an interesting error dealing with the forecast. Second, for those of you wondering what it sounds like below zero, enjoy the second video! It was brisk that night.

So, in other words, any individual TWC HD viewer may or may not eventually get the IS2, and Comcast viewers will probably have to wait the longest before it comes... if it ever does eventually come.
Fail.

is there anyway we can make a list of the cities that have received the IS2 in one topic?
i haven't had a chance to check out TWCHD in either San Angelo or San Antonio.
Here in San Angelo, I have Suddenlink...dunno if we'll ever get it. in San Antonio, I have time warner...based off of what I've read none of the time warner headends have upgraded yet, someone correct me if I'm wrong.
i'll definitely be checking in on TWCHD here in Angelo within the next couple of days (haven't gotten a chance to check since like last semester, lol).

I know some of the cities, based on IS2 videos I've seen and posts in the IS2 discussion (there could be more).
Nashville, TN (Comcast)
Murfreesboro, TN (Comcast)
Lafayette, LA (Don't know)
Baton Rouge, LA (Don't know)
Grand Forks, ND (Midcontinent)
NYC, NY (Cablevision)
Toledo, OH (Buckeye)
Topeka, KS (Cox)
Hutchinson, KS (Cox)
-
Providence, RI (Cox)
So far i haven't seen any in Southern MA not even the above in RI (reported being seen on Providence, RI Cox AVS Forum)
Watch it come to the end of 2011 and we will still be talking about Comcast not having the IS2
-
Fargo, ND/Moorhead, MN (Midcontinent)
Bismarck, ND (Midcontinent)
-
Riverhead, NY (Cablevision)

Hopefully this Compatibility issue gets fixed really soon, i wonder what cause it in the first place.

Wichita, KS has IS2 as well. More cities in KS do with Cox, just not for sure which.

It's interesting how the IS2 has holiday names in the LF. So far, I've seen Christmas, New Year's, and MLK Day.
-
Baton Rouge and Lafayette are with Cox.
-
It's interesting how the IS2 has holiday names in the LF. So far, I've seen Christmas, New Year's, and MLK Day.
I saw that as early as the WeatherStar III. It depends on how the forecast is written, not from any "holiday sensor" programmed into the Star.

The IS doesn't have that feature, though.

The reason earlier STARs, like the III and 4000 had used holiday names is because that's how the NWS phrased their forecasts for holidays. When the NWS forecasts were dumped in 2002 in favor of TWC's own text-based forecasts the holiday names disappeared because TWC doesn't use holiday names in their forecasts. As for the IS2, the forecasts are likely from TWC, but probably a different source from the current IS, XL, Jr, and 4000 forecasts. If you notice, the IS2 does not omit the "F" from temperature readings like the other STARs do.

The "F" after the temperatures doesn't look good. Either there should be a degree symbol in between the temperature and "F" or it should be removed all together.
As for the holidays, I think it is cool that the IS2 has them on the text forecasts but think they should only be used for major holidays (like MLK day or President's Day probably isn't as necessary as Christmas or Independence Day).
-
The "F" after the temperatures doesn't look good. Either there should be a degree symbol in between the temperature and "F" or it should be removed all together.
There always should be degree and Fahrenheit symbols for temperature. I hope that's at least done on the IS2 someday, or we'll have some fun from people visiting us and thinking it's Celsius. Furthermore, a F by itself on a value can mean "falling" like with barometric pressure.
-
we'll have some fun from people visiting us and thinking it's Celsius.
I don't think so, considering there's only a rather narrow range of temperatures that would allow for that kind of confusion, and even then, only on a day without precipitation! Anything warmer than 40°F would be unbearable in Celsius, if not impossible to live in.
-

Im sorry, but i dont understand what you mean.. if you mean 40° centigrade instead of 40° farenheit i can understand.. if its unbearable at 40°F then how do i survive? :P the average monthly temp for all 12 months down here will always be above 40°F

You're right. It's just a technical point because I just hope the IS2 incorporates as much accuracy into it as possible. Tons of people see a LF from TWC everyday. I even hear about it from phone calls at work!
-

If people see only "40°" written on the screen and aren't sure what the temperature scale is... they should. My point is that 40°C is quite hot (104°F), and so any higher number would indicate a major heat wave.

Has anyone else started getting local ad scrolls on the IS2 yet? They just started today here.
On the topic of holiday names, the forecast doesn't always get read during the LOT8's when it's a holiday. MLK day forecast never got read out loud at all.
-
On the topic of holiday names, the forecast doesn't always get read during the LOT8's when it's a holiday. MLK day forecast never got read out loud at all.
They probably didn't record the holiday names, and so when the page came up, there wasn't any vocal to start it with, so nothing got read.

Yeah. That's kind of a problem. They should have either recorded the holiday names or not use them at all because the forecast should always be read for consistency.
On a second note, I would be interested in seeing a video with an ad crawl on the IS2. I'm assuming it's just a bunch of words scrolling at the bottom of the screen, but does it look like an LDL, or not?

The holidays are recorded and are supposed to be read. MLKD not being read was an error.

Well, at least that's better than nothing! Kudos to TWC for trying, though I have to wonder just how interested Comcast is in making this anything close to a "priority."

TWC really should go by the NWS color codes for the watch/warning/advisory scroll. The IS2 is showing Special Weather Statements in red, along with just about everything else like Winter Weather Advisories. I just don't see an advisory warranting the color red.

I agree with you. Hopefully this is on the list for further programming changes. I personally couldn't get used to a simple weather statement in red. It just doesn't "jive."

I did some asking around, and the crawls are actually orange, just a very dark orange. I agree with you, as I couldn't personally tell the difference until after they mentioned it. My only suggestion is to open a support topic and mention that on tv, it's very hard to distinguish the red/orange crawls, and maybe the issue will make it up to the right people.

If the Pittsburgh FiOS head-end does get the IStar 2, does that mean they might select the same areas as on the IStar?

Our towns around Topeka that are shown on IS & IS2 are different. Don't know if it's like that everywhere.
Also, is anybody with IS2 having a lot of cueing issues? Ours isn't cueing at all a lot, and when it does it tends to be a little behind. We get the national LDL and LOT8's a lot lately.

It will most likely have an AQ screen, i wont be surprised if some stars would have a Outdoor Activity forecast.
-
The outdoor activity is discontinued from regular usage on the IntelliStar now, so I won't expect it on the IS2 either.
The air quality only shows on the LDL on the IntelliStar 2, not on the LOT8s.

Air Quality is not shown on the 16% LDL. It only showed on the 33% LDL, which as we know has been discontinued.

Is the AQ going to come to the small LDL (along with temperature/precip information)? If AQ is important for air sufferers then it should be seen somewhere.

One can only hope. I wonder what kinds of technical issues there were, but at least some progress is being made... that's the important thing, I suppose.

Charter Communications in the Metro Dalton GA area has now launched the Intellistar 2 HD on our system. It was just launched yesterday May 13 on channel 797.
Our standard definition channel is still using the WeatherStar XL.
So far, there have been some bugs in ours, with some features showing No Data. Otherwise very nice and much better than our XL.
Thanks,

LOL, you have an XL and an IS2? Seems like an odd combo there.
-
When I first got into TWC, I always got the XL and IS confused. I would just find the thing that people talked about the most, and used that. I once thought the LDL was the XL. :P
Are you sure that you don't have the IntelliSTAR? It looks like this (ctsy. KenoshaTWCFan):

I'm not kidding.
I recorded the few screenshots below just a few minutes ago. They are from our WeatherStar XL.
Everytime I go to another town, I am always jealous of the Intellistar, because it has so much more than our XL ever could.
I'm just happy that we have the Intellistar 2 at this point. It's the closest thing we've had to modern technology in our area.
Thanks,
Steven
-
Wow, thanks for the screenshots! The XL is my favorite STAR! I love it's icons! You are very lucky to have an XL....it's also very rare to see the XL in a big city such as Chattanooga.

It isnt in Chattanooga, its in Dalton GA... ;) only reason chattanoogas on there is because its the closes airport

I was merely backing up my statement of having the Intellistar 2 HD and XL on the same cable system at the same time. Some of y'all thought I'd went completely bonkers when said it and thought I didn't know the difference between Intellistar and XL.
SO... If that's off topic, then I apologize. But I like to back up a statement when I am being challenged. Thank you.
Steven.

Contact STAR support then ;)
-
Still no sign of the IS2 in any comcast location yet.
I'd love to know what the problem is and when it will be solved. Sadly, I'm still convinced that there's a considerable amount of foot-dragging going on.

Last word i got awhile ago was the Lab Testing is on Comcast's end and TWC hasn't gotten any word on the results yet, hopefully there is a better explanation in the near future.
-
whatever the problem is, it's not TWC's fault. it's comcast.
people seem to be blaming TWC. honestly, i just don't think it's their problem.

Remember though TWC is trying to appeal to the customer (cable provider). It would be in their best interest to make the necessary changes for compatibility if they want to increase their market footprint. Both parties should work to reach a solution

Believe me, I very much blame Comcast! :censored:

Nashville and Murfreesboro are both Comcast.

yes but those were test markets

Are ad crawls on the IS2 generated by the cable company? I've seen some recent videos of the IS2 on YouTube (the most recent being a couple of weeks ago), but none of them have an ad crawl.
-
Ad crawls are inputted through to the system by the headend. They are generated by the IS2 itself. As with every other STAR, not all cable companies utilize the ad crawl at all times.
-
Has anyone else had the precipitation screen show up lately? I haven't seen ours since the first day the IS2 was booted.
-
It isn't supposed to show up (for now anyways). It showed up on the first day for one of two reasons: your playlist wasn't configured correctly, or one of the essential products didn't have enough data to display, and the precip product was shown instead.
-
Perhaps it showed up for the first 3-4 runs of the IS2 since I watched it actually start and load in the information? Must not have gotten the information for the almanac screen since everything was saying no data the first hour of it running and showed the precipitation screen. Thanks, Tyler.
-
I hope they insert the precip screen, as well as an AQ forecast (especially essential during this time of year).
-
Wow. Our IS2 just flipped out. It was doing this last night at midnight but nothing like it just did. It was flashing the LDL, green screening, tiling the video feed, dropping audio, went green for about 1 full minute with no audio, got the national LDL and now it's back on with LOT8's green screening, etc. Anybody else having any issues?
-
What is anybody's thoughts on the 4-city forecast screen on LOT8's? I really wish they'd replace it with an information frame like air quality or seasonal info like allergies or something. It just seems redundant to have the same information all over the place. LDL and different maps show the same forecast already. Why not put something different? Thoughts on what it could be replaced with?
-
Supposedly the IS2 was going to have pollen reports and airport delay screens, none of which I have seen on videos yet. After all the "hype" that TWC gave this product years earlier, it kind of seems like the IS2 is a bit of a let-down now. :(

I think airport delays were on the alpha, but they're not on the beta.

This may have been asked before, but does anyone know what font is used for the temperatures on the IS2 regional maps?

Thanks...as you can tell, I was too lazy to search through 29 pages to find the answer. :P

I sent insight in Louisville, KY an email asking when they will have the local on the 8's Louisville forecast in hd. They sent a response a few days later and said by the end of June.

The 4-city forecast is useful for headends that serve large areas so I think they should keep it. I do however think the almanac should rotate with other special screens like precip data, air quality, and such like you mentioned.

That would make the second KY IS2, right?

Holy cow! Now i really hope that my hotel in Williamsburg has HD  :P
-
None of the hotels in Williamsburg uses Digital, so you're not going to find TWC HD, sorry.
-
Just got the IS2! Whoo
Funny how your area gets it before Boston
-
Martin has Cox, Alex. Boston, on the other hand, is dominated by Comcast.
-
I've been tuning into Channel 847 TWC lHDl the past 3 days and some Xfinity Commercials have been appearing alot lately, i don't know if it has something to do with the Intellistar 2 coming to the Boston Area but i will post any new updates if i see any changes.
-
Figures - the IS2 would come to Boston after I leave. I waited over a year for it to come when I was there!!
No HD feed in Daytona Beach, so I guess I'll never see it for myself. :cry3:

Wow, both Central FL brighthouse operations surely are taking their sweet time getting TWC HD onto their lineups

Interestingly, Bright House has more HD channels than Comcast has in Massachusetts! But TWC HD is conspicuously absent for some reason. No Weatherscan, either. All I can think of is that Bright House has its own weather channel, but it's basically similar to a satellite local forecast on TWC with voiceover narration. That, and Bright House has its own 24/7 local news station with rather detailed weather reports every 10 minutes.

do they play smooth jazz like TWC/WFMZ 69 Accuweather or boring production music?

thanks for the update tyler.

Update on Xfinity
Xfinity has been slow to get HD stars. They are still in a testing phase. A few more should be turned on in Atlanta soon. No idea about when a larger deployment for them will happen.
weird how i only live 18 miles southeast of Providence and my area doesn't even have it :(
-
I meant to post this earlier, but over a month ago, we finally got HD service, and thus, TWC HD. I was a little surprised to find, when I turned to TWC HD, that we had the IS2! :D Not sure how long we've had it, though, seeing as I just got HD service.
I'm impressed by the IS2 so far. B) I'll try to get a video of mine up as soon as I am able to.

Comcast has very few HD STARs. So why are you surprised that you don't have it? Let alone that you live in Providence, market #34, when Comcast headends in markets #1-33 don't have it yet.
-

I'm surprised i don't have it because all these small area's get the IS2 so easily and all the big metros have to wait over 1-2 years to even acquire it.
the biggest reason im surprised is Providence got the IS2 right when they got TWC lHDl added to their system and my area got the channel in April 2010 with still nothing to be seen...
Edit: also forgot to mention Boston's had TWC lHDl Since 2007 and still hasn't seen anything either.

is the IS2 going to have an 8-City current condition page like on the Intellistar?
-

No.
-
is the IS2 going to have an 8-City current condition page like on the Intellistar?
No.
That doesn't surprise me. This is just a carryover from the "Latest Observations" page from as far back as the WeatherStar III, as a way to show current conditions throughout the region but before the capability existed for a map. Honestly, I'm surprised that this product survived as long as it has!

Same reason Comcast doesn't have them. Still working out issues...

that's sad, for companies like comcast and verizon to boast they both have the best fiber-optic networks that they can't even have the IS2 before others like Cox, Time Warner, Smaller Cable Co's
i just hope one of the issues isn't bandwidth.

Comcast and Verizon could probably care less about the IntelliStar 2.

There's a lot of stuff they could care less about. Customer satisfaction, for example. :)

Comcast and Verizon could probably care less about the IntelliStar 2.
Then having channel 847 here in Massachusetts is pretty much a FAIL

Comcast and Verizon could probably care less about the IntelliStar 2.
Right, there's other things that prioritizes on top of that. Besides most people get their weather online now, so I doubt there's much of a demand for the I2 HD.

Quite a lot of requests actually around here. Too bad the damn thing crashes 20min before the severe weather hits.
-

I'm pretty sure Comcast cares a little bit about it since they own some chunk of it.
-

Yes and no. It is a high definition channel that Comcast can sell to its customers, and they get to add one more channel to their list of HD channels. They don't obligate themselves to buy an expensive piece of equipment to add a blue bar and two minutes of "local inserts" every 10 minutes to go along with the HD channel.
-
there has been tons of requests throughout Massachusetts when i asked the Comcast VP of Public Relations in New England so i don't see why there is a blind eye out here.
Fall River topped with about 24,000 requests at the local Comcast office.
-
Just an update, I'm here in Chester, MD and we get Local Forecast feed for Centreville, MD... I have Atlantic Broadband and we have had the IS2 HD for a few months now. I have been out of town for about a year and now love having it :D
-
I don't have Cablevision anymore, so the IS2 cannot be seen but I'm rather disappointed that FiOS (which I have now) doesn't carry the IS2 for the NYC Metro

i would of thought Boston was a beta city, they've had TWC HD since it's launch in 2007.
(Boston transitioned in December 2006)
TWC HD launched in 2007 but the i2 HD did not launch then. It didn't officially launch until 2010. And, only those cable and/or satellite companies who bought the i2 HD box launched it. So if you have HD in your area and still see the same old graphics you've been seeing for like ... forever now. Call your cable/satellite provider and ask them to upgrade and buy the new box. Only then will you see the new intellistar2 HD graphics. We can only build the product ... doesn't mean everyone purchases it, unfortunately.

And then you have to hope that you don't have Comcast, because their equipment apparently isn't compatible with the IS2. :(
I had Comcast when I lived in Massachusetts. I had the HD feed, but no Star. Now I live in Florida, and there's not even an HD feed!

Comcast New England maybe doesn't have any clearance to purchase it yet because last i heard from them the IS2 was still being tested in their labs, i guess that means at least my state (Massachusetts) won't see the IS2 anytime soon. :(

Does anyone else notice a blue line through the animation on the current screen for Thunderstorms in the Vicinity? I see it every time it plays. Almost right in the middle of the animation.
-
I find if funny that even though I have given answers as to why certain places have the I2HD and some don't, that you folks continue to speculate. Quite amusing, actually.
-
The reason there is so much speculation is because there hasn't been an update yet on the rollout progress. especially on the Xfinity and Fios sides of the ball.
-
Anyone notice that on the LOT8's page that the IS2 picture is different than what it is right now? Was that the original concept or an update to come I wonder?

Whoa. That's weird. I've never seen that before. Nice find!
Also, look at this LDL. Maybe this was the first draft of the new LDL? Maybe that IS2 photo was the stage between beta and full-launch?

EDIT: Wow, I'm a bit on the looking-for-little-features-that-really-don't-matter side of things today. Look at the attachment. Blizzard for Miami at the end of the week!

As has been mentioned before, the mock-ups were made before the real product came out...I'm guessing the picture seen on weather.com is a mock-up or maybe a prototype that was updated and never released to the public. I have no idea why the mock-ups that were shown on that LOT8s video on TWC Media Kit look nothing like the IS2. They barely even look like the Alpha STAR that was released in NY and surrounding areas a couple of years ago.

Whoa. Although I want to say I would like to see those (because that would be cool), I don't know if I would really want to because I could be in some real danger.

Any weather phenomenon that can obstruct the visibility at airports counts in the METAR observations. This entire chart shows all the possible phenomena that can be reported and potentially encoded into the CC if the STAR can handle it:

Wouldn't it be kinda difficult to report a tornado as an observation unless it's spotted on the ground ahead of time? Unless it's going by what's radar detected.
-
I recall back a few months ago that KSTL (St. Louis-Lambert Int'l) reported a tornado. Let me see if I can find it.

I'm not sure that I can share...
Why would you want to let us know that you have information the rest of us aren't allowed to know? Why not just keep silent? It really is a mean thing to do to say "I know a secret but I'm not going to tell you," especially when the information that you're not allowed to share would be of great interest to the rest of us.
Really, it's just like taunting us, and it's not very nice.
-
Again...I AM NOT SURE IF I CAN SHARE IT. If I get an OK from the one who gave me the info, I'd be glad to post it.
Then why are you telling us that you know the info, but wont tell us? Thats what i dont get
-
hopefully an admin does give you a ok, i would like to hear the info you have for us.
-
Ya, I'd like to know this "info you can't share."

i never understood this concept of people having the nerve to say "oh I have something to say, but I can't tell"

I know why, but my lips are sealed. :whistling:
-
Trevor, next time, please obtain approval to say what you want if it's a legal or copyright issue before telling everyone else. When you state that you have something really interesting to share but admit that you haven't obtained approval yet, it comes across as teasing. I can tell you didn't mean it on purpose, but it almost always gets interpreted that way.
-
Well, that makes me feel awfully good about myself. Thanks

What is the font everyone uses, such as for the "NOW" text? It can't be Interstate - if so I got screwed.
-
It's called Hanzel.
-
It's called Hanzel.
No, the "NOW" font is a weight of Helvetica.
-
It's called Hanzel.
Hanzel is the font used for the numbers on the metro maps. ;)

So NOW is a weighted version of Helvetica
and Hanzel is numbers for maps?
Does the weighted version of Helvetica go with the rest of the text, such as in forecasts and such?

The Louisville, KY local forecast is in hd started earlier today.

Thanks Robert for updating, I did manage to contact a higher-up at comcast new england and he told me he will let me know what's causing the long delay with the IS2's in-house testing at Comcast/Xfinity's labs TWC's early timeline is between Q1-Q2 2012

It's not at weird as it seems. The Star for the SD feed and the Star for the HD feed are two separate pieces of equipment. It's very possible for one headend to spend the money for an IS2 without upgrading the SD Star, and it's also possible for the HD star to be located at a different headend that just feeds the channel and IS2 into the more local headend.

Our IS2 LOT8's bottom left-hand radar that stays on the length of the run had two additional cities added to it. It's no longer just Topeka. It's now Topeka, Berryton & Silver Lake on there.
EDIT: BTW, those 2 towns are both the first two additional cities on our LDL with Topeka being our main city.

So you mean the sidebar switches between Topeka and the other cities too? So far, I've only seen that on one other IS2.

No, the towns show on the mini radar only. Only Topeka is shown on the sidebar for forecasts.

Wish I could, but I don't have HD cable box on my HDTV
That's a shame, and such a waste of an HDTV. Actually, among those I know in real life who have an HDTV, the vast majority receive primarily or only SDTV stations. Some don't realize what a waste that is. Others do realize it, but are unwilling or unable to pay extra for HDTV programming.
As I'm in the minority of my acquaintances who actually does have HDTV programming on my HDTV set, I can say that the difference between SD and HD on an HDTV set is glaring. That's why I'm so upset that my local cable company doesn't offer the HD feed of TWC. I wrote a couple of letters - both, apparently, ignored, or at least unanswered. I called a couple of times. Eric, I've been reading up on a forum occasionally that talks about TV services around Central Florida, and according to their sources, both Bright House of Orlando and Tampa Bay are in talks of TWC HD... havent seen any more news on the topic, but it hopefully is by the end of 2011..

The first time I was put on "indefinite hold." The second time they just hung up on me.
It is a waste, but until I'm the one in my house paying the cable bill it's out of my hands. Also, my HDTV and the other one we have were "replacement TVs" meaning two of the TVs we had were SD TVs that stopped working so I had the Motorola SD cable box a year before I got this HDTV. When we moved back into our house after some renovations at the time, the cable guy lied and said it was HD compatible so if we decided to get a HDTV we wouldn't have to switch boxes. I'm not sure who he was trying to fool, but I knew that wasn't true, we had that same modeled box before I never recalled seeing any HDMI ports on it. I even told my mom that, but she can be very stubborn. :itsok:

Oh, thanks for the update! It certainly would be nice to have the HD feed here. IS2 would be even better. :)
Are you able to provide me with a link so that I can keep track of this news myself?
-
What if you were to contribute the additional cost of HD programming and an HD cable box yourself?
Back in the mid-1990s, our cable company introduced its first cable box with an on-screen programming guide. I wanted one, but my parents didn't want to pay the extra cost of having one in my bedroom, so I paid the extra amount myself. Later on, when DVRs came in cable boxes, I paid the extra cost of having one in my bedroom.

Comcast in ATL (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=20996866#post20996866) finally got the IS2!
Tavores could you check if your area got it too?
Interesting that they are still launching the IS2 even after switching to "full-screen" LFs at only :28 and :58 for most programming. I guess this shouldn't stop them from continuing to launch an expensive program they developed within the past year, though.

Well if it's true that Comcast Atlanta viewers have the IS2, the bright side is maybe it won't be long before other Comcast subscribers in other cities/states get it. If I was at my brother-in-law's auto shop I could verify whether Atlanta actually has the IS2 or not. For some reason, I feel like the suburban areas such as Marietta are the ones who actually have it, they were the first ones to get TWCHD.

Of course they're going to try to get as much money out of it as possible, even if the majority of its products will only be available now for four minutes every hour.

Still such a waste on a hard worked on computer local forecasting system, it's too bad people's attention spans are so short that the LFs had to be reduced to an L Bar, but I can understand because our technology is so well advanced that most folks are not going to want to sit and watch a 90 sec. or 2 min forecast they can look up online or get on their phone or iPads.
-
They're starting to install the IS2's faster so viewers won't complain they don't have an HD Localized L-Bar :bleh:

I don't think it's because of short attention spans. I think it's because TWC wants to make more money with commercials, and, most importantly also to attract an audience that's not necessarily interested in what the UV forecast is or when the next high tide will be.
We already know that weather forecasting is becoming less and less important at TWC. It is changing itself into a reality-themed network. We know that, and there's nothing that we can do about that. Local forecasts just do not fit into TWC's new image of itself.
You're also right that it's a waste of the Intellistar, and it's also because there are so many other sources for real-time weather information that just did not exist back in 1982, or 1992, or even 2002.

That's what I am thinking. The IS2 would be a waste IMO if it can only be seen twice an hour. How many people are honestly going to sit around and wait for 30 minutes to see their LF presented with the new hardware? Not me.

I brought up to my mom about switching our cable boxes to HD ones again because it is a waste to have a SD one for a HDTV and this time around she said, "Yeah, sure." She claimed she told me to remind her to call back when I asked her over a month ago, but I don't remember her saying anything of the sort. Well anyway, once we have those HD cable boxes (maybe by the end of the week or this weekend) I'll check TWCHD and see if we do have the IS2 here. If we do, I'll try to get a clip of it and post it here.

I can't recall if this has been asked before, but does the IS2 display a record high/low screen?

I don't think so. I've never seen it on my IS2 nor any other.
-
I can't recall if this has been asked before, but does the IS2 display a record high/low screen?
It does, but it's quite rare. It's called Climate Data. It has the average and record highs/lows, not to mention pixie dust. :P
-
Ah, well that's a bummer. :hmm: Thank you both for answering. I do remember seeing a picture here of the Climate Data screen, but I figured the record low/high would be a separate entity like it is on the regular IntelliStar.
-
I think it was because the climate data page was shown on the default playlist when the IS2 first booted up.
-
Why does it seem like the IS2 has less information than the regular IS? This may not be true, if we haven't seen all the screens yet, but the IS2 does not have record temperature screens or an air quality screen. It also doesn't have the supposed "Airport Delays" screen or the "Pollen Reports" that the ad for the LOT8s on twcmediakit.com was talking about. <_<
My assumption is that TWC figures the average viewer couldn't care less about these screens, so developing them would be a waste, but I would think that airport delays and pollen reports would actually be useful to any viewer.
-
Given the recent drastic decrease in the amount of time given to local forecast segments, and, thus, the number of flavors used, I don't think increasing the amount of information given is anywhere near the top of TWC's priority list right now.
-

Well, I wasn't necessarily talking about right now. These products should have developed a long time ago, as soon as the IS2 launched. Unless TWC already had the vision that they were going to cut back on their full-screen LFs (and why would they when they are about to launch a sparkling new HD forecast), then I don't see why these were never created in the first place.
-
WOW! Cable in Madison Heights now has the IS2, no joke. I saw it when I was changing channels today on channel 263.

It doesn't. Here, we had a record high tied the other day and no record screen was displayed.

No, what he means is theres a screen called Climate Data on the IS2, however, no one sees it due to the factor that its not programmed into any of the mainstream product playlists.. the only time it may get shown is if theres an outage with products and is being used for filler replacement on the products being affected by an outage
-
I hate that, I think it should be apart of the rotation. For me, I would scrap either the Hourly screen or Daypart, I don't feel there's a need for both to be used in the same LF or at least scrap them for the :28 and :58 LFs.

Oh, I misintrepreted. I thought the record high/low screen was referring to the equivalent of the bottom portion of the IS's Almanac screen. As for that separate product that GTAIVman was referring to, I have yet to see it.

Atlanta area IS2 (Marietta)
Local on the 8s for Marietta, GA (HD) - 9/23/2011 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKbA1YyufqQ#ws)
-
This is great! I can't wait to get a clip of it Saturday. I'm assuming Downtown Atlanta is going to be configured similar to Marietta. The only problem is I hate I won't be able to get it in HD quality.
EDIT: Also, regarding the thread title, should the IS2 still even be considered a beta launch if it's already showing up in several major cities/markets now?
-

Well, we've kind of misused this thread. It was originally created just to mention a beta launch for Nashville. Now most of our IS2 discussion is here. There really is a separate thread for IS2 videos, although I am seeing most people post their videos of the IS2 here (which makes sense) because this is where most of the discussion is.
-
Well either Atlanta's IS2 is out for the moment or we don't have one at all because I got my HD cable box today activated over the phone and this is what I'm seeing on TWCHD. Only the HD Satellite LF. :hmm: If it's the former, should I report it?
-
That makes 3 IS2 Units that are not functioning at this time.

GTAIVman's IS2 was out (and still may be out) last week, and someone posted on the forums (https://twctodayforums.com/forums/weatherstar-tech-support/is2-31669-has-gone-mia-in-arlington-texas-on-the-hd-feed/msg162049/#new) that their's was out.
EDIT: It looks like GTAIVman's IS2 is back.
-
Just remember that because 3 people have confirmed IS2s to be out doesnt mean that only those 3 IS2s are out.. ;)
-
Well nonetheless I'll enjoy not having to hear any narration when a really good song plays for right now.
-
Louisville, KY is out too
-
Ours has been working fine besides the occasional glitch where rows of pixels from the LDL jump across the screen. Haven't even seen the green screen in weeks.
Scratch that: we're green screening and tiling bad now.
-
Some of the IS2s being down may have something to do with Tru View Max Traffic being added, that's the only thing i could think of which might have caused the shutdowns.
-
No Alex. Nothing to do with that.
-
No Alex. Nothing to do with that.
Since it's nothing to do with that, would the IS2 have traffic on it?

There are no plans for any traffic products on any platforms.

Reason i asked was because of this (http://www.wsi.com/products-media-television-truvu-max-traffic.htm) it just came out 9/22/11
-
Alex, the TruVu Max Traffic product would be something the OCM's use on air. Not something that would actually be integrated in to the IS/IS2. If it was to ever be integrated at all it would just be the source Max Traffic uses, not the actual system itself.
-
Even if MAX showed incidents and speeds/times it would still be useful on stars. I still don't get why TWC and NavTeq didn't come to terms on an extension.
-
May be a little late on this, but 31471 is out too.

It's typical, my Intellistar 2 has been going in and out (that's what she said :rofl2:). Lately it's been fine but about 5 days ago it was out again for the second time. It's been happening on some of the new units. My IS2 changed a month ago to a newer unit from the old one at Farmingdale. This new one at Islip has more problems than the old one! :dunno:
-
So is everybody's IS2 out?
-
So is everybody's IS2 out?
No, but the newer ones tend to have more deficiencies than the old ones.
-
Maybe they're making some sort of changes to some IS2s whatever that may be. Seems kinda odd so many are unavailable or intermittently unavailable. That's just my theory.
-

That has nothing to do with age. I would also double-check and see if your IS2 is out (ie no ID, no LF but national, and no local LDL), because based on a lot of posts as of late, IS2s nationwide seem to be out.
-
Well, last time I checked, my IS2 was running fine. I'm checking right now but you know, TWC and their shows, nuff said. :noexpression:

Also, My Farmingdale IS2 rarely ever had problems. Ever since it changed to the Islip IS2, there have been so many problems.
-
Are you sure that Islip isn't just your backup reporting station? I find it wasteful to buy an IS2 only to have it merged with another one months later...

His IS originally reported from Islip, so it would make sense to use an Islip IS2 rather than Farmingdale, which is rather far from Islip..

Correct, plus Cablevision has several headends scattered throughout long Island so it's very possible to have seperate IS2s for these seperate headends.
-
Our IS and IS2 have both been, and continue to be, functioning just fine.
-
The IS2 is very glitchy for my area. Being such a relatively new system I think its normal for some units to have complications.
-
So since my Intellistar 2 is out and I am not the only one I should expect it to come back soon. Anyone findout why it all of a sudden disappeared from multiple providers systems? I thought it was due to Time Warner doing equipment installation for SDV changes at the headend and them having to move the IS2.
-
Seeing how the IS2 had made its debut on a Comcast system in Atlanta, any word on when it will debut in other markets yet?
-

No current ETA. And with Comcast, it's headend by headend as to whether or not there will be technical difficulties installing the I2HD (like why it hasn't come to other cable companies).

More bad news. A couple days ago, the Islip IS2 had problems and was displaying the national LF. Now, I am now receiving a IS2 feed all the way from NYC. I am really pissed at this :furious:. Time to take action :club:, this time I'm serious.

Why are you getting upset? Problems like this can be fixed. They can't be fixed until they're reported, and a fix isn't going to be instantaneous. Please be patient, and things will be working normally again as soon as the problem can be taken care of.

You don't understand. Your local weather ID doesn't change every 2 weeks. That is why I said I'm going to take action. I do report these problems, and you know what happens?, the problem reoccurs later again. You don't understand so don't tell me to be patient, I've had enough.

You catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar, and if you start insulting those who are going to be helping you, I'll report your posts to the forum administration. The Star team is here as a HUGE favor to us; they have no obligation to be here, and they have to requirement to stay. Treating them badly is the ABSOLUTE LAST thing I want to see happen.

I apologize. It's that I'm really not happy with this.

Syosset, NY Cablevision is using the Intellistar 2 for Islip...isn't syosset a bit far from islip?

I apologize. It's that I'm really not happy with this.
You simply need to show more patience here. What if the STAR at your headend suffered major problems to where it had to be shipped back for replacement and they're simply showing another IS2 temporarily until it's all fixed? Furthermore, what if your headend consolidated with another one, which would prompt a change in coverage to where they need to change the STAR? You don't know what happened here, so it's better to not vent out all your anger and frustration upon people that may be doing their job just fine based on the circumstances.
-
Syosset, NY Cablevision is using the Intellistar 2 for Islip...isn't syosset a bit far from islip?
Wow, yes it is. If anything, it should be using the Farmingdale IS2, unless if they taken that one down. That may be the reason why it switched from Farmingdale to Islip. A lot of strange things have been going on around here.
-
Would any of our helpful sources of information (i.e. Martin, Tyler, Jesse) know what the deal with the massive outages of IS2s is? :dunno: I can't really imagine all of them disappearing coincidentally like this. Obviously there has to be some reason, and it would be nice if we could know so that speculations causing conflicts like the one above can be eliminated.
-
About a month after we got our IS2 last December we were suddenly getting the Manhattan, KS IS2. That lasted about 2 weeks before we got Topeka back. :dunno: Sometimes there's issues with purchasing the units, or there's unexpected problems. I think ours needed to be replaced for whatever reason and they switched us over to the Manhattan unit so we wouldn't be completely without.

I don't know. I was at a party over at Syosset on Satruday, and that config was what I found on that person's TWC feed. I asked him if he really gets Islip conditions..and he told me no, he gets Farmingdale's..

Confirmed, Jackson, MS has an IS2. ID: unknown at this time.

The rollout of the I2HD has not one thing to do with Comcast adding more HD channels in your area.

Anyone else have changes made to their IS2? Here in Topeka we had another city added to our "mini" radar in the bottom left corner and also "The Week Ahead" screen has moved down some. I don't see any other changes right now. Wish the Precip screen would be added to either the LOT8's or the LDL.

Maybe that's a logical explanation for why so many seemed to be disappearing all of a sudden.

I haven't made any changes to mine. I only requested for a city change.

Yeah I know, that's what I meant.
-
lol Yeah, I didn't make any requests. Was just wondering if they keep adding cities/towns to other mini radars since orginally they all only had the main city shown.
-
Having four cities/towns showing up on a small radar, all in the same county is kinda stupid, though. You can't even hardly see the actual precip.

It seems most if not all I2HDs have had their corner radars updated. Doesn't really bother me since the domestic IS/weatherscan have been like this.

Woah.. I just tuned into TWC today for the first time in a couple weeks and now I don't have the IS 2 anymore  Down for an update I guess? Don't know if this has been discussed yet.. Haven't had time to look on the forums much so I'm completely unaware right now whats going on lol

Uh yeah, this has been discussed. ;) Just look at the few pages preceding this one. We are not 100% sure why some of the IS2s are going out, but it could be for an update.

I'm kind of surprised the IS2 didn't have Halloween as a holiday like it has for everything else so far...

I think that's for more important holidays. Halloween isn't really a true holiday.

Only national holidays are, I believe.

Yeah, agreeing with Mike, I think the IS2 will only show holidays as the NWS shows them (i.e. they would be national holidays). Look next Friday for Veterans Day, and that will give us a clue. ;)

IS2 is out again for me. This is the 8th time in the past 2 months that my IS2 has failed. Come on now... :(
-
Guys, you can't expect the IS2 to be perfect. It, just like the Intellistar or any other STAR, is prone to outages and glitches so we will just have to deal with it.

This is a different. Members are welcome to mention when their unit is out or not operating properly.
-
I'm not sure how much different (internally) the IS2 is from the IS, but it doesn't seem like it should be this problematic. To me, it seems like it's very unstable or some of the units are defective.

Think of it like Microsoft deciding that instead of building Windows 7 on top of Vista that they would start from scratch and use no code from Vista. The hardware and software are completely new here. Not to mention this is the first product of its kind to do this in HD. With the XL and IS at least there were some similarities. I would imagine the XL and first IS versions were just as problematic
-
I can recall several bugs and glitches on my IntelliStar and especially Weatherscan IS when they first debuted, so this is nothing new.

Ah well when you put it that way it makes sense. I didn't think about the fact that the IS might have had similar problems. I didn't notice any myself since I didn't watch TWC much then and plus I confused it with the XL anyway.

And if I recall, Frank Batten mentioned the numerous headaches and "growing pains" with the XL. Just give them some time to work it out, guys.

That reminds me...The XL and IS were both partner projects. Meaning both TWC and a separate company worked on the coding. The IS2 is all in house from what I heard
-
Still no IS2 in Reston, though I'm pretty sure our being a Scientific Atlanta/Cisco market and Cox actually owning the lines up here has a lot to do with that.
-
Seems a lot of Cox headends as of late have been adding IS2s. I would assume Ocala, FL has one if Pensacola has one being they are in the same relative location with the same cable company. I can probably check on that soon if I visit my grandfather.
-
Make that failure number 11 for my IS2.
-
Our IS2 wasn't on at 10:00AM CT. Now the LOT8's is showing the Climate Data temperature screen. Everything else is loaded in, too. They must have actually added it in finally.
-
My IS2 is back, but it is cueing late, the LDL is on during the commercials and there are absolutely no narrations. They probably did a reboot or they installed a new unit.

Ours is doing the same since 10am CT. Was just about to come back and say maybe the Climate screen isn't meant to be showing like I had thought.
-
...and now we're getting the Precip screen, too.

I wish I had those screens. Still don't have it.

Hm. It wasn't coming on during every LOT8's. I recorded an entire afternoon of them and figured people had already seen the screens so I just deleted it. :blushing: I'll record Weather Center Live @ 6pm CT and record a video off there if they show up.

Can anyone provide a screenshot of the beach screen that was talked about here?
Hi Martin,
We're particularly proud of that one. The design alone took forever and the programming on it to make the data flow correctly was a nightmare! But it works and I love seeing it in action!!! Too bad I'm not in a coastal area.
Also the Marine forecast screen is pretty cool too. Has anyone seen that one yet?

*Poor quality* but it's all I could find on YT at the moment. The screen occurs at :46 in the video, and it's not considered a "beach forecast" but a "marine forecast." I don't think a beach/getaway forecast exists on the IS2.

No, we're talking about a seperate screen than the marine forecast. ;)

Sorry about that. I posted before I re-read the posts from a few months ago. I didn't realize Mike was talking about something else. :wall: Supposedly Tyler has seen this mysterious "beach screen." He will probably be the only one who is able to provide a screenshot.
-
That's something my IS2 is missing. A marine forecast. The old Farmingdale IS2 had one.
-
Is anyone else getting sun/moon errors on their IS2 during forecasts? We will get the party cloudy with a sun icon at 9pm, 10pm, 11pm, etc. It happens on the hour-by-hour forecast on the LDL and also on the forecast maps. Most often happens for the 3am-5am forecast period on the LDL. It's happening now at 5:30pm CT for 8pm-10pm on the hour-by-hour LDL.
Also, just noticed in the first picture that Auburn says Cloudy but is showing the Mostly Cloudy symbol.

Yeah, the climate screens are now regularly shown at :28/:58 after the almanac.
-
I think it's because there's no narrations. The precip screen comes on as well. They come on everytime the narrations have been turned off for whatever reason lately.
-
Maybe there is a flavor error that is causing the narration to fail, Tyler may have a better knowledge than i do on the error.
-

The narrations have came back, at least on my IS2.
-
Yes. They're back here as well. Have not seen the climate or precip screens since.
-
Well, the climate data screen is now gone just as I expected :(
-
Well, just got the climate data screen with narrations and all other frames working.
-
I would like to see the climate screen and/or precip screen, if anyone has a video. Thanks!

Anyone else's IS2 out? Ours has been out all night. Right on the eve of our first winter storm. :pinch:
-
My IS2 is just fine
-
No IS2 to begin with. :(
I wrote to Bright House Networks to convince them that the HD feed of TWC would be a good thing to have. They, on the other hand, have no plans to add it in the near future. It apparently wouldn't serve their viewers as, say, brand-new high definition feeds of adult entertainment pay-per-view channels would.
-
There have been reports that both Central Florida BHN markets are getting TWC HD on January 25th, Eric.
-
:worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship:
Thanks for the update! I've heard nothing about this, but I'm glad you have! I'll certainly keep my eyes out for it. I'll be very glad to have the HD feed again, but it would be even nicer if I'd get to see the IS2 in use, too. Comcast in Massachusetts had HD but no IS2.
-
Just found out that the IS2 doesn't narrate "Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday", instead Jim just says, "Our local forecast".

It didn't last year, either.

Just wondering, does anyone know the name of the font that is used on the IS2 LF's? It's not Arial like I thought.

The font used for the temps on the metro map section and the STAR ID/Channel Number/Cable co. (if text is present in lieu of logo on ID screen) is called Handel Gothic (or Hanzel for short). All other fonts are variable weights of Helvetica Neue.

The last 3-4 days here on insight cable in Louisville, KY there has only been the national feed on local on the 8's. Is it just here or nationwide?

I would open a thread in the STAR Support form here if thats the case.. just be sure to include location, STAR ID, and cable provider :)

I think that IS2 may be coming from the Cox provider in Roanoke. I don't see anything as I'm on the Comcast provider in Blacksburg.
-
Was that one recently installed?

I think so, but it's only because I've never heard anything about it until now. :dunno:
-
You know you've been waiting far too long you get the IS2 if part of your dream involves you flipping through the HD channels to see you finally got it and you're actually excited about it. :itsok: In reality I wouldn't be excited about it, it's just the principle of not having it after this long period of time.
-
That's how I felt. I knew approximately when it was coming, but couldn't find out on which channel. I was randomly channel surfing one day when I came across the HD feed - with the IS2! It took about another week for the channel to appear on the on-screen programming guide.
-
Don't get your hopes up. With all this L-Bar and long form programming, I seldom get to see it.
-
it's lovely the Boston Area doesn't even have the IS2, and the director of Xfinity Boston PR hasn't gotten any word of a launch date yet.

Yeah, that's what irked me when I lived there. The Boston area was one of the first to get the HD feed, but we've been through the discussions of why Comcast hasn't adopted IS2 in most areas yet... and why they probably won't in the foreseeable future. :(
On the other hand, you have Weatherscan up there, which we don't down here.
-
Easter still isn't narrated... You'd think they'd have recorded it and everything by now. Instead it's just "Our local forecast."

Does the IS2 show "Easter" as a day name? If so, I am very surprised because Easter is not considered a federal holiday, and I thought the IS2 only showed/narrated federal holidays, like the NWS.

Xfinity Massachusetts went all digital today (all analog and basic cable removed), i bet even with the new bandwidth avaliable we won't see the IntelliStar 2 anytime soon :hmm:
-
The IS2 can have more than one metro map! :o
Honolulu, HI IntelliStar 2 - March 30th, 2012 4:57 PM HST (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Fls5RxEBWY#ws)
-
I guess they didn't want to zoom the map out too far so they set it to split the area of Hawaii into two maps. I doubt they would use multiple metro maps for any other area outside of Hawaii.
-
Cool! An IS2 from Hawaii!
An important question, though: is that city-by-city 36-hour forecast new, or only for Hawaii? I have not seen it on another other IS2 videos that anyone has posted.

There have been videos of city-by-city 36-hour forecast. I've seen them for sure. Just can't find them :hmm:

I see no reason to narrate the holidays. Just more work for developers to worry about considering the dates jumps around a lot.
-
It's odd that they would bother having him say "Our Local Forecast" on a holiday that isn't narrated. It would make more sense if it was narrationless.

Here's a new reply i got about the IS2 on Xfinity Headends
Comcast has not initiated their full HD launch yet. It's coming. I believe their rollout should begin sometime over the summer.

We are rolling out HD local service in Xfinity systems nationwide. Massachusetts systems will have local weather in HD later in 2012.

If this turns out to be true, I like how they don't specify a clear timeframe. I know a few posts up it says "sometime over the summer" but I'm a little dubious of that, I want to believe what they're saying, but another part of me says I shouldn't. I'll just play the wait and see game for a little longer. :itsok:
EDIT: Alex, I saw in your question you brought up about the bandwidth thing again, I'm thinking it had to be more to it besides that, we went all digital here 2 years ago, even before the IS2 began beta testing. I'm beginning to think they must of purposely planned to wait until all Comcast/Xfinity served areas went digital before working on launching any IS2s in their served markets.
