Title: Emulator Release- Public Beta 1
Post by: cc17926 on October 30, 2008, 04:16:39 AM
READ THIS FULLY!!!

First, I will preface this and say that Windows Vista has got to be the most uncooperative operating system, not only because of security but because of legacy compatibility!

Anyway, with that out of the way, I would like to invite you to download a copy of the emulator and try it for yourself! If you find that you enjoy the emulator, with the assistance of Martin and I, you can customize the emulator to your local area and select which packages you wish to view.

Although much consideration has been put into this program to run on older-style computers, the rendering time/transition effects depend on how fast your computer can crunch those routines and produce output.

Incase you are not familiar with this project, to customize the emulator to your local area, you must establish a login and password with the configuration server, and then you may configure the emulator to your likening. Martin will assist you with this task because I am generally working while alot of fans populate this site.
To demonstrate the emulator's function, you may use Martin's or my ID until you establish a login, then you may configure the emulator to your local area.

To download the emulator setup file, visit this link: http://copper.yi.org/wsl/setup.exe (http://copper.yi.org/wsl/setup.exe)

After you install the program, a set of 3 icons are created on your desktop and also in your Program's (from the start menu). Each are to: Set the affilate ID, Manually Update the program(in the event i change how the emulator functions on startup, this will download the executible automatically), and the Core program file.

NOTE!! Windows Vista!! NOTE!!
To run this program, you MUST run this as "administrator" by right-clicking on the icon and selecting "Run as Administrator", or else you will experience major trauma!!

To locally configure the emulator for the first time, open the "Set Affiliate" program (Vista note above). To demonstrate the emulator, you may use either: "Martin" or "brian" (without quotes) to test-drive the emulator, I live in Philly Metro area, home of the Phillies World Series Champs. Martin lives in Norfolk, Virgina, home of the cargo ships (just kidding!)

To run the emulator for the first time, run "Weatherscan Local XL" (Vista note above). A box will appear mentioning that this program is copy-controlled. That means we want to know who is using this program!
A temporary 3-day key is provided here:
Name: Trial
Key: 0J3F98-6TXEY5-GX6Q66-NJT5TW

If you would like to use this emulator for your local area, please contact either Martin or I .. (try Martin first) and we will assist you on that task! After your 3-day trial expires using the program, contact either one of us to recieve a key which will allow you to continue using the program.

Please note how you like the program, or if you have any problems! We are looking for feedback. This is the first time this emulator has been released out from beta onto the public.

Happy Emulating!

"The STAR ID does not exist, check the spelling and try again."
What did I do wrong?

Did you remember to set the affiliate? This tells the emulator whos configuration to show.

At the moment only two IDs exist.
Martin
brian

I am working on creating usernames. If you still get the error and are putting in one of those names as mentioned above, make sure if you are using vista to run as admin for both the set affilate and the program.

Also in the future be sure to post any problems in the Help and Support forum. Thats what its there for

What ID are you using ?? Did you establish a login with Martin ? You can't randomly make up one without configuring one on our side ;)

I've tried it, and I like it. If you have preferences, a "gilbert" account would be fine. Take your time, no rush, and thanks for doing this, guys. I don't know how you did it, but it works very well. I'll need to head to the board to find out why on Vista I can't kill it by pressing the "Escape" key or something like that, but that's what reading the manual is for.  :D

:salute: to all involved for a job well done.

I think that even though by the letter of the law this would technically be illegal we'll be alright. As Martin said, the 4000 has never run into an y problems with TWC. I think that's because this sort of thing isn't done for profit, but rather just for the fun of it. I think TWC would have more issues with this sort of thing if someone were profiting or benefiting in some way from it.
Title: Re: Emulator Release- Get Your Copy Here!
Post by: cc17926 on November 03, 2008, 11:34:37 PM
the program is created more for weather awareness and safety, expressly used for personal enthusiastic purposes, not even a profit.. although the NWS is established by the department of commerce.. go figure..
Title: Re: Emulator Release- Get Your Copy Here!
Post by: Gil on November 04, 2008, 05:13:31 PM
Let's just put it this way - If TWC had a problem with it, they would certainly put an end to it. That goes for the 4000 emulator too.

However, seeing as neither of the systems are in use (WeatherScan XL discontinued in 2003), or are considered "Legacy/Obsolete", I don't think they would have a problem

Ok, apparently there's some confusion about this rule. Since Martin and Brian have instructed people to PM them a username and password they wish to use, you can obviously do that. But that only requires ONE PM. You may not necessarily get an immediate response. That isn't your signal to bombard them until you do.

But this is the ONLY reason to PM them.
I think this quote makes it clear enough for you.

LOL, I sure hope it does.

I'm not trying to be nasty about this whole PM thing, but Martin and Brian have clearly stated that they aren't pleased about the number of PM's they've received, and so I feel its my job to help control the problem. The best thing I can say is READ THE SETUP INSTRUCTIONS. They tell you precisely what to do.

Gentlemen, if you read Martin's letter to the newbies and my response you'll see that I DID read the instructions and did what was asked, Some of us newbies actually DO follow instructions, however the only reply from him was here in the forum addressed to the newbies, so I assumed he was including me as he had not replied to my PM sent on 11/12.

I feel the need to defend myself as I DID FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS, I run a radio message board out of Utah and I understand how frustrating newbies can be. I guess if I don't hear from Martin in a few weeks I'll send a request to the Brian

Waiting...

I didn't single you out. In fact, I didn't even come close to implicating you. In fact, newbies in general are hardly the target of my messages. There are a few particular eggheads I had in mind that have a hard time understanding what their told, and I figured it was those people that were the culprits of most of the PM's.

Still, the message is the same to everyone. Please abide by the rules. If the rules say to PM Martin or Brian ONCE, then do it only once. If it says you can do it again if they don't respond, do it only ONCE MORE. Realize that Martin and Brian have other obligations outside of this forum and project. I have no problem with people PM'ing within the guidelines that were set out. What I'm trying to stop are the people that PM these guys about every problem, every ocurrence, every little issue, 10-15 times a day. Those kind of things need to be posted on this forum. If you post here to get a key, don't follow that post with a PM. You get the idea.

Yes I have been overwhelmed by work these past few days. With the passing of my father about two months ago I have had a lot more on my plate to deal with. Not only that school and been brutal these past week or so. Extra work to do around the house, reports, tests and so on. I have seen everyones pms. Im not ignoring you. Even those who dont seem to be able to read instructions (not directly blaming anyone) I will send a response to set them on the right track. As for Brian he works Wed-Sun from around 4pm- 12pm each night give or take a few hours. My only time for contacting him is mostly when he gets home late in the evening so its a bit difficult to get quick communications between everyone. Its not fun going to bed around 1-2 and waking up at 6 every day. It wears me down and I just cant do it everyday. I am unable to make the keys for the emulator myself. That is a limitation to the software that generates it. I would love not to have a key but we have to keep some control over this emulator because some people will rip it apart (which we have seen in the past) and even atempt to use coding or certain aspects of the program. May I also not that this is NOT a finished polished version. We cant solve every little problem. Some of the locations in the configs dont work. Ok we got it. Were working on it too. Use a different location for now. For the most part there is little difference in temps and conditions between certain stations.  So in conclusion wait. Thats all im saying.  :cool3: Im thrilled that people are excited about the project and are interested in using it. We are only human so cut us some slack :P

Whew alrighty there we go. Everyone SHOULD have an account who requested one. Those who had 0 posts or 2 posts and said "can I use the emulator" I did not respond to. I may if i find myself twiddling my thumbs one day. Dont think that will be anytime soon. Anyway if you did not get an account please send me ONE pm. I will try to be more prompt about it in the future

Martin & Brian, I'm a newbie to this forum. I'm from the TWC Classics forum. My name is Wesley, and I've been a Weather Channel fan since 1991. I downloaded your WeatherScan XL emulator setup file. Martin, I'm using your affiliate ID. Outstanding presentation on the emulator. Either one of you who may be reading this post, will one of you please give me the key needed to continue using the emulator along with customizing for my area? I would appreciate it. Thank you.

Remember Me? From The Old Forum? I kinda notices it wasn't active anymore.

I'll like one customized emulator with chocolate sprinkles and gummy bears. (Mom Please... Just This Time...)

You are not to PM Martin or Brian in regards to the emulator. They have kindly requested that members not do so.

No problem Gary :P

Just to clarify to anyone new..

a. the emulator is about to get a major release! its ever so close. I cant give a certain date but lets just say its VERY soon. If you catch my drift.

b. as of now since the emulator is not out and released there is no point in sending login information via pm to me. you may do so when the release comes out

c. keep checking back! i promise you will like this update. its worth the wait

Ok, I am reeeally out of date here, but everytime I run the program it just dead-ends at the screenshot below.

Likely some aspect of the program that got tweaked. It was not intended at this point that the current release of the emulator still be operational for users. The next release has a lot of tweaks and touch ups.

Hang tight guys, I got this one comming out in the day or two.. I've been very busy over christmas with the load volume of customers to my place, and even after the new year, still had a load of customers.. The volume of people tires me out. I forgotten that I had this burden right before the holidays, so my scheduled date of december 20th was delayed. I appreciate the patience by many! Also, I had martin trial test the release and it appears to be functional, only need to do is pack it up into an installer and send it out :)
