Title: When Do You Expect the First Snowfall to Happen In Your Area?
Post by: toxictwister00 on October 20, 2010, 08:21:52 PM
I'm interested in knowing when you guys think you'll see the first flakes fall where you live. For my area I'm guessing around the Thanksgiving Holidays or shortly right after. Thanksgiving Week is the earliest I have ever seen the first snowflakes fall here which was back in 2006 two days before my birthday, that's a rare treat.

I have actually seen the first snow of the season occur before Halloween, but I don't expect anything early this winter with La Niņa in place.  I'll guess around the middle of December and hope for a white Christmas.  It'll be interesting this winter as I'll be taking official snow measurements and making snowfall reports for the first time! I don't know if it ever will in the city of Tampa. I remember there was sleet in some of the outlying and nothern areas last year.

And over here in extreme eastern Hillsborough county

As for us...no. Weve been in a drought and its pretty much how 2008-2009 is going for us.. Below-normal autumn but winter was at par or above par.

November 19. It looks like a system with a colder air mass may reach the Great Lakes between November 18-21.

(On statistical average, the first flakes fall in Monroe, MI on November 11.)

I thought that was the light snow/snow shower icon, and the one with 3 coming out of the cloud and 2 below them was the "snow" icon... Maybe I'm just thinking of the XL icons set...

BTW, I still say November 19, because one of my local mets said: "An accumulating snow could be possible a few days before Thanksgiving. I'll talk about it more when the time gets closer."

I checked accuweather and snow is in the forecast from Nov 19-Nov 21.

I measured the first trace of snow back on December 1, but I'm still waiting for the first inch to truly call it the "first snow" of the season.  It may come later today from a little Alberta clipper if the snow will stick on the ground.

Thats awsome, at least your snow forecast is true  unlike ours <_<, the weather forecast two days ago said that there was a chance of snow in our area next Tuesday. http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/1001/snowpossibleon120710.jpg (http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/1001/snowpossibleon120710.jpg)  But it kinda dwindled away off the cast.  I wasnt surprised though, and our NWS area forecast discussion its still possibe to see some wintry precip in our area Tuesday night, so im still hoping for it to snow then, and on christmas.

It snowed briefly on Thanksgiving morning here but it melted once it hit the ground due to high ground temperatures and earlier rainfall. Other than a few flurries I don't expect any measurable snow for the next few weeks as we're in a pretty dry spell right now. The clipper that's in the forecast will miss us by the south.

If anyone guessed December 4 would be the answer for my first snowfall, then you beat my prediction of mid-December!  2.7" of snow fell from that clipper, and everything is white here.

A very interesting setup possible next weekend with a system coming through the Great Lakes. GFS says a weak disturbance, while the ECMWF predicts a major winter storm....

I think our first measurable snowfall will be sometime in mid December.

I'm betting we could see our first measurable snowfall in the next few weeks or so. Will it stick around? Not sure.

P.S. for those of you who don't know, I'm in Bozeman, Montana for the next year, not Buffalo (attending college at Montana State University).

UGH, I hate winters like that where we only see a few snow showers/flurries and that's it although we haven't had a winter like that in years. What I hate even more is winters where we see more ice than snow. The icicles are pretty to look at, but it's nothing but an inconvenience.  The last time we have a crippling icestorm was in January 29, 2005 and surprisingly we have had mostly nothing but snow the following winters since. Another surprise was how great last winter was snowfall wise, last winter was the first time I saw double digit snowfall, we picked up 10 inches total.

EDIT: Also I know we Southerners get made fun of for thinking 40's and 50's are cold, but do we get any merit for these temps? :P
