Title: Largest Hailstone that you Observed
Post by: TWCmatthew on June 13, 2011, 12:29:50 PM
I haven't seen this question on the forums, so I thought I'd add it.

The largest hailstones that I ever observed was on June 19, 2006. Penny to nickel sized hail fell outside my window, with quarter size hail reported about 1/2 mile south of me (by another spotter).

The largest I've seen is 0.75" hail when I was in graduate school in Albany during 2006.  However, I missed seeing 1.25" hail just this past Thursday as the NWS office in Blacksburg experienced a bad storm.  I was off from work at that time and didn't see any hail at my apartment complex.

Back on April 27th, during that massive tornado outbreak, my dorm advisor brought in a hail stone about an inch and a half wide. There were local reports just outside of campus of hail up to 2 inches.

I saw hail around 2 inches long during a severe thunderstorm back in July 2004. I was living in Wilmington, DE back then.

Largest I saw was about nickel size back in August 2008 while in Franklinville, NJ.
