How big can hail be? I've seen reports on the net that there was basketball-sized hail in China ,is that even possible?!

I haven't seen bigger hail in person (biggest I've seen in my life was golfball-sized hail).

Oh, Zach.  :bleh:

Oh, Zach.  :bleh:
Wow, was this in CA? I'd be surprised if hail got THAT big in California.

@ Zach, :rofl2: I think she meant to say nickel, but obviously there was a slip-up :P

There was an 8" (Just shy of soccer ball size) hail report in SD last year. That is the world record for large hail.

Don't know who told you that, but there has never been hail basketball sized recorded anywhere in the world. I'm sure if there was, though, it would destroy a call in seconds and probably instantly kill an unprotected human being.

Matthew's right about the Vivian hailstone. The hailstone with the largest circumference (length of the stone all the way around) came in at 18.725 inches. That hailstone fell in Aurora, Nebraska. It previously held the record for the largest hail stone at 7 inches up until the Vivian stone.
Tiddlywinks.

Actually, just baseball-sized hail falling on you out in the open can kill you, and it has happened before.
