Since the topic of internet connections has been brought up in the Front Porch quite a bit recently, I thought it'd be a good idea for a new poll.
Right now, I'm using DSL through BellSouth/AT&T, and as you may now, it SUCKS! Thank god I'm switching to Cable (with Cox) in a week or so. I've had it before, and it's WAY better than this crappy service I'm on now.
So, what do YOU use?
-
Cable!! Wooooot!!!
-
DSL. I've used it for a total of 6 years (1999-2002, and 2005-present) and have never had an ounce of trouble out of it, except for needing to replace the modem one time because it went up 9and you have to expect that kind of stuff to happen with ANY type of internet).
-
I use that type of internet thats made for my computer :P
Seriously tho, I have DSL from Primus.. Then I also have free Cable Internet from work.
-
Cable.
-
I noticed DSL is relatively inexpensive given the speed. Gary, was the price in 1999 much higher?
-
It was a little higher, because back at that time DSL was a relatively new technology (cable internet wasn't even around yet). I believe the price was something like $59.99 per month.
-
Compared to my $20, and compared to Gil's $45ish for cable, that is a tad higher! :o
It's amazing how much the price came down since then
-
I have Verizon DSL at $21.99 a month.
-
Yeah DSL really has become very reasonable. Quite frankly, I wouldn't trade it for cable for any reason. It's very inexpensive, and has been pretty much trouble free. On the other hand, I can't say the same for my experience with Comcast.
-
Well, they both have their odds and ends.
What problems did you have with cable, Gary? I do recall you having a comcast email address a while back now that I remember.
-
Comcast, IMO is better because it is much faster than Verizon even though it is more expensive.
-
I think the prices for Cable will go down in the future, much like how DSL did. And to be honest, I don't mind the extra price for Cable because of what I've went through with DSL. It's not even worth bothering paying for an always-on DSL connection when in reality it is "Always Off". <_<
-

Well, I'm still waiting on that. Price of DSL went down from $40 (for 384 kbps) to $20 (for 1500 kbps), at the same time, Comcast (in this area) is still at $45. <_<

My problem was similar to the one that Stephen is having with his DSL. I had frequent disconnects. So frequent, in fact, that itmade using the internet a struggle. I had tech's come out on several occassion, and for the most part all they wanted to do was put the blame on my equipment (interior wiring, router, the ethernet card in my computer). finally a tech came out and after some testing determined that there was a problem somewhere because my bandwidth was much lower than it should have been and my packet loss was sky high compared to where it should've been. The problem never got solved, and eventually I dropped Comcast and went with Verizon.
Thunder, its not as much faster as you think it is.

I don't expect that to happen as long as cable co.'s are free to do as they wish.
-
I've never experienced those problems that you had with Cable, Gary. Several years ago, I had Cable internet from Cox, and it was VERY reliable. B) I'm looking forward to going back to it.
-
You have to realize that different companies have different levels of service. Comcast's happens to suck. Personally, I'd rather have Cox than Comcast. Their service and services are rated much better than Comcast's. In fact, most other companies are rated better than Comcast, because Comcast is down near the bottom of the list.
-
What I can't wait for is August 1st...when I get DISH network installed. It seems to me that analog cable is becoming obsolete, no?
-
Cox isn't in all areas because villages have those strict franchise agreements. If they didn't have those, then one would actually consider a different company besides Comcast (or whatever is in their neighborhood) <_<
-
Sort of, but sort of not. There are still a great deal of people who subscribe to analog calbe. And to be honest, its till a very viable option. Its very attractvie to those (like myself) who want to get a cable only service (local forecasts for example), yet don't want to pay the price for digital. IMO, analog cable will remain a viable option for that reason. Its the middle ground, so to speak.

Cox is definitely way better than Comcast. I have had NOT one cable outage with Cox (except during Hurricane Ivan, obviously).

I agree with you. In some ways I prefer analog over digital, which in a way I am not flattered with the FCC ruling about the Feb 2009 changeover

Unfortuantely, the same doesn't hold true with Comcast. It would be a miracle if a day went by without some area in this state not experiencing an outage.

Wow. I feel sorry for you guys that are stuck with Comcast.
-
Meh. Comcast isnt THAT bad. I'd rather have Comcast than go without cable.

Believe me, I'm dreaming of the day we get some competition. Actually, we do have some competition now with Verizon's new FIOS service. Though if you go with them you only save a few bucks.
Gil, Comcast IS that bad.
-
Wow. I feel sorry for you guys that are stuck with Comcast.
Actually, there is a cable company in my area literally called "Wow"
-
Well, I dont like their outrageous prices, but the quality of their service is pretty decent (around here atleast)

yeah there is! its called Wide-Open-West i think!

From what I've heard the quality of Comcast depends on where you are.
-
I've read complaints on the internet from every square inch of this country about Comcast. It's nothing short of a miracle if Comcast is any better in your area.

Yeah, I certainly cant complain with the quality in this area, and the High-Def is amazing.
-
Like I said its nothing short of a miracle then. I've read bad reports country wide about Comcast.
-
I must be very very lucky then. We rarely get outages here. Usually there is one outage every 2 years.
-
No, your not lucky. That's more than just luck. That's a godly miracle.
-
I think it really depends on your headend.
-
I have to disagree. I don't know what it depends on for sure, but I really don't think its that.
-
Gil's right. The HD is superb.
I HATE Comcast's analog cable. They constantly take away channels. Comcast is good, only when there are NO PROBLEMS. Once you have a problem, it's like pulling teeth trying to fix it. I had static last year on every channel, and it took em two weeks to fix it (had to replace a line amplifier)
The townships have no right to only allow one cable provider in an area, IMO <_<

Yes, the HD is like being in heaven. Personally, I've never had Comcast's analog cable, but i do know they've been changing around some of their Basic lineup for the ffirst time since (i assume) TCI or AT&T in the late 90s.

I agree. I'll never live anywhere where they tell me who I have to subscribe to.
-
Its unacceptable that we have NO choice, other than Cable or Satellite! Where is the competition?!?! I'm going to start a cable company...
-
For the record, how many cable providers do you guys have available in your area?
Gil, I remember TCI!! They're so ancient. Although, I never had them (had DirecTv)
-
LIke I said earlier, we now have Verizon's FIOS service as a third choice in this area, but I'd still like to see more competititon. And I'd also like to see stricter regulation of the industry.
-
2 cable providers here-Comcast and Verizon.
-

Just make sure you get the franchise agreement that the village WON'T let you have because someone else already has it (:censored: cast)
-
Yah, i vagley remember TCI. I believe it was bought out by AT&T Broadband in either 1999 or 2000 or something, then Comcast bought out AT&T Broadband in 2003...

I dfont see why they can only chose ONE company? Other places have several. Why can we only have one?!!?!?
-
Eh. I know of lots of places that have only one or two.
-

Two is more than one. Why is that we can only have ONE? thats stupid. I'm going to leave a flaming bag of doodies on the doorstep
of the village officials >:(
-
What about WOW cable?
-
They dont have it here :( We only have Comcast. I know Schaumburg has some really weird cable companies i've never heard of, but i dont know if they are available in all areas.
-
Well that's where the headend is (Schaumburg). I don't know if those are even available to the public.
-
According to the TWC Channel Listing site, they are:
"ADVANCED SYSTEMS TECHNOLOGY-ADS"
and
"TVMAX TELECOMMUNICATION INC"
-
What website is that?
-
We've got 2 cable companies here- Comcast and Cox.

Comcast and Cox? What kind of a choice is that? You might as well choose between a nice ripe apple or dog :censored:

LOL, that's true. But I'm sure most people have chosen Cox. ;)

I had dial-up from when we started using computers here in the mid 1990's up until November 2004. Now we have Comcast High-Speed Internet, in both of my houses.

Yah same. I had Dial-Up from when we got our first computer in 1997, through September 2004 when we got Comcast. Love the speeds, but I miss
the Modem Noise dial-up makes.
-
Me too. For some reason I liked the modem dialing sounds.
-
I use AT&T Yahoo! DSL. It works excellent.
-
I've got WOW Cable Internet at 4.0 Mbps.
-

Hmm. AT&T Yahoo!. I have Verizon Yahoo! and it works well too.
-
Don't we all use the same internet? I wasn't aware that there were different types?

Guess I should've worded the topic title better. :D
