Okay so i got a big bag of potato chips at the store today, and when i opened it, the bag was half empty!! How can they do that!?!?!?!?
Thats not fair!!!!!!
-
That's the way they do it all of the time. Even in the smaller bags, the chips are always half full
It makes me mad too :censored:
-
Yeah. That happens all the time. You don't always get what you pay for. I bought a big bag of nachos only to find it was half full and the bag costs 2.99! :censored:

LOL, time for me to interject some sense into this conversation. Its called settling. The chips settle after their bagged. That means that what started out as a full bag now LOOKS like half a bag because the chips have settled. But the same amount of chips are still in the bag. If you were to weigh the bag it would weigh what its supposed to.
And that's todays life lesson. :rofl2:
-
I know about this settling stuff! But on rare occasions, i got a full bag and THERE WAS A FULL AMOUNT OF CHIPS! Guess settling has never occured.
-
Sometimes it doesn't.It also depends on how long the bag has been on the shelf. Often, bags more recently put on the shelve have had less time to settle.
-
Now i feel like an idiot.  :cry2:

I thought it was b/c of air? That if they didn't put a certain amount of air in the bag that the chips would go bad quicker? At least that's what I thought that what they said on Modern Marvels or How Do They Make That.
-
Very interesting bit of information, Matt. I've been sitting here thinking "Hmmm..." for the past 5 minutes.
-
Matt, doesn't air make things go bad, quicker? That's why they vacuum seal things.
-
Yeah it does. The goal is to keep air OUT of the bag-hence why most people use a clothes pin or some other device to keep the bag closed after they open it.
-
FoodSaver!! :D

Settling does have to do with part of it. But some companies do put a shot of Nitrogen gas in the bag to keep the chips fresh and to reduce breakage.
-
I HATE breakage >:(
-
I just saw a big bag of marshmallows in my kitchen cabinet and there's not settling. Big bag, more marshmallows=Big bag of chips, less amount. TaKe the settling out already!!
-
Marshmallows don't settle.
-
Thank god for that!
