Title: Sports Thread
Post by: Mike M on March 08, 2008, 11:29:00 PM
Didn't see any thread like this in a search, so I decided to start one. In this thread, talk about anything sports.

Tonight I went to a Flyers (NHL) game against the New York Islanders. The Flyers win 4-1! B)

Well I like this thread! Glad someone finally thought to start it! Anywho..

Let's see....the Washington Capitals took a hard 2-1 loss today, resulting from 10 minutes of penalties in the last 6 minutes of the game. No loss is good at this point as the Caps are in the playoff hunt and need to win as many of the remaining games as possible.

The Orioles are doing well in Spring Training so far, having won 5 of their first seven games, including one over the defending champion Boston Red Sox. Of course, nothing counts, but its still a good sign, seeing as the Orioles have undergone a major rebuilding effort and are a team comprised mainly of young talent.

The Maryland Terrapins (college B-Ball) are in the hunt for a spot in the playoffs, but are going to have to win some games in the ACC tourney in order to make it.

To catch Gary up to speed on my friendly exchange of words with Tyler over the friggin' Penguins getting past
my Rangers in the previous playoff series...

From May 4th after Pittsburgh eliminated New York in the Eastern Conference Semifinals:
Quote
Nothing against you, Tyler... but don't even get me started as you don't want to hear me say a few choice words I'll regret.

Win a f'ing game where the officiating doesn't provide a gift victory and maybe I will respect your city's team a little more.
The fact that Ryan Malone got away with murder for not receiving a double minor for high sticking is beyond a disgrace.
AND the fact the referees were RIGHT THERE looking at Chris Drury bleeding and didn't make the call.
Your team should be kissing the feet of the officials, NBC and that douchebag Gary Bettman right about now.

Jaromir Jagr being a sissy? What the hell do you know what he said?
You guys complain about Sean Avery, but Jarkko Ruutu is also a big fat prick.

The Rangers beat themselves more than any other reason.
See your God damn team next year and we will get our revenge.

And with that... LETS GO FLYERS!

Tyler's response to that...

Quote
I'm not looking for you to respect the Pens nor Pittsburgh. New York lost... and the Pens were successful. That's all I was looking for.  :)

Quote
Who the hell cares what he said. It's HOCKEY... if someone can't handle some rough language and nasty talk, then get the hell out of the game. The sissy part came in when he complained to the refs... like a 2nd grader complaining to his teacher "Johnny called me a booger." SISSY.

Unlike the previous series against the Rangers, the fact of the matter is, there haven't been any calls
that have illegitimately benefitted the Penguins against the Flyers... at least in the first two games,
Pittsburgh has actually outplayed Philadelphia so far. Keep in mind most of the Penguins' success
has been at home where they've won 15 straight overall dating back to the regular season.
We'll see how the Penguins fare in Philadelphia before people jump the gun and punch early tickets
to the 2008 Stanley Cup Finals.

I would too, but I don't know how he'd handle the grueling Belmont mile and 1/2.  He gets his launch after the final turn, but at Belmont the front straight is longer...it'll be interesting if he takes off at the clubhouse turn or gets held back for a front stretch run.

He's definitely the strongest candidate for the Crown in recent time.  Easily stronger than Barbaro if he made it through the Preakness.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are in the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time in 16 years with a 6-0 Game 5 victory

Yeah, but this time of year, most NHL players don't even accept being physically tired.
What makes the difference in winning and losing is having enough left in the tank mentally.

Don't underestimate the Stars since they have the momentum right now and going back to Dallas but being a PGH fan I hope the Pens take it in 6 games

The Stars may have won the last two games, but the Red Wings in my mind won't lose four straight.
I cannot see that happening. One way or the other, Detroit should close this out.

And as far as the Penguins are concerned, if there is one team that can stop them in their tracks,
it is the Detroit Red Wings. Experience usually wins out over youth. Pittsburgh may be hot right now,
but think about whom they just defeated. The Flyers are obviously not as good as the Penguins
and ultimately that became fact this afternoon. The Ottawa Senators were completely overmatched
due to injuries and a goalie controversy to boot.

I know it's like comparing apples to oranges, but look at what the Boston Red Sox did in '04 to reach the Series...they won four straight after being down 0-3...so it's not completely out of the picture.

Probably won't happen, though.

Probably won't happen, though.

It's only happened twice in NHL history where the 1942 Maple Leafs and 1975 Islanders did it.

Meantime...

The Boston Celtics survive a playoff series that went to the limit (and I hate that fact!) and move on
to the Eastern Conference Finals after their 97-92 Game 7 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.
They face the Detroit Pistons for the right to go to the NBA Finals.

They defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 6 by a final score of 3-2 last night at Mellon Arena.
Brian Rafalski scored a power play goal just 5:03 into play while Henrik Zetterberg and Niklas Kronwall
each notched two points. Chris Osgood made 20 saves to secure the victory and propel Detroit
to their 4th Stanley Cup title in 11 years.

Zetterberg's eventual series-winning goal with 12:24 left in the game was scored on a freaky play in which
the puck slipped through Marc-Andre Fleury's pads and knocked in over the goal line. He would later claim
Conn Smythe Trophy honors as the playoff MVP.

Evgeni Malkin and Marian Hossa each scored power play goals in a losing cause for Pittsburgh. But the outcome
of the game would ultimately not be determined until Hossa's last second gasp at the tying goal was denied,
a heartbreaking play for Penguins fans as the 2007-2008 season came to an end.

It was, in all honesty, an unsurmountable task for Pittsburgh. They needed to win 3 straight, and the chances of that happening were near nil.

Pittsburgh played a fine series though. You just can't get yourself into a 3 game deficit against a team like Detroit.

Final score: Houston 3, St. Louis 0

I hate the Astros!

It's been a tough year for sports here in Michigan.  The Wolverines (football) posted their worst record in its 129 year history.  The Tigers, a team that was expected to compete for the World Series, end up finishing last in the division (yeah, behind the Royals), and so far have done nothing to improve.  The Pistons are in definite decline.  I think that's all the teams... oh wait, I almost forgot.  THE LIONS.  All the Lions did was post the worst record in NFL history by becoming the first team to ever go 0-16.  I mean, the Lion's have always been bad, but now with this historic feat, the whole world gets to know just how retched this franchise really is.   Now despite all of that failure and ineptitude, there is one team here that stands above the rest.  The Red Wings continue its high standard of excellence year in and year out, and is the lone team that people around here can be proud of.

My Ravens made it too! And their going to smear the Steelers all over Heinze Field. We lost the first two games we had against them, but you know what they say-the third time's the charm!

Of course, in more immediate matters we're going to send the Dolphins back to the ocean!

Baltimore 13
Tennessee 20

Yeah you just can't give us the ball that many times. You'll lose every time. The Titans are lucky that Ed Reed didn't have another hot day, or else it could've been much worse.

Alright, here are my predictions for this weekends NFL championship games:

Eagles 17 Cardinals 14-The Cardinals haven't been here in almost half a century. I don't think their going to make it any further. Their defense is pitiful. The only reason they've made it this far is because of a couple of good receivers. Kurt Warner is at the end of his career, and he wouldn't even be playing had the starting QB not gotten hurt. But if Donovan McNabb reverts to his old ways from earlier in the season Arizona could pull it out.

Ravens 10 Steelers 6-This game is going to be all defense for both sides. Both sides are going to be hitting hard, and I think that if the Ravens can hit Big Ben it's going to play to their advantage. Joe Flacco has been ironclad all postseason, and I think it'll take a bus to rattle him. Also, the Ravens have had 0 turnovers in the postseason. If they can continue to protect the ball like that Pittsburgh doesn't have a prayer. Hopefully since this is a playoff game the refs will be sure not to be the deciding factor. If there's a time when the players should decide the game and not the ref, this is it. Both teams have reliable kickers, so if it comes down to field goals we could very well be looking at the need for an extra quarter to decide it. But the deciding factor in this game is ultimately going to be determination. Your going to have to kill Ray Lewis and company, because their going to do everything possible to keep us from losing 3 straight to the Steelers. Neither offense is terribly great, but I believe ours is better-last week we played a defense that was light years better than the Chargers. So before the Steelers fans got too excited about last weeks win, they should have bore in mind who they played. Don't expect a rout this week.

Super Bowl-Ravens vs. Eagles

Super Bowl-Ravens vs. Eagles
I agree with the Cardinals not winning. I just wish the "football Cardinals" would move back to St. Louis and reunite with the baseball Cardinals.

Anyways, my AFC championship predictions:

Steelers 15, Ravens 9

Super Bowl: Eagles vs. Steelers.
Title: Re: Sports Thread
Post by: lfmusiclover on January 16, 2009, 12:13:20 AM
You know, I've seen alot of people talking the Steelers up because of how they beat the Chargers. Come on, we all know the Chargers D couldn't hold a candle to ours. If the Steelers think their going to repeat last weeks performance, their in for a very rude awakening. Ed Reed is going to make them pay dearly.

And beating us three times in a season is the equivalent of climbing Mt. Everest in a blizzard-damn near impossible. This is going to be hell on earth. They'd better have every ambulance in Pittsburgh at Heinz. They're gonna need them.

I went 1-3 on predictions last week.  :pinch:

Here are my predictions:

Eagles 31
Cardinals 24 - The Cardinals defense will finally get exposed and the Eagles defense will do a good job of putting pressure on Warner which should result in a couple of turnovers.

Ravens 9
Steelers 14 - Both defenses are great but Pittsburgh is better offensively.  The Steelers won't have as many turnovers as the Titans or Dolphins so the Ravens will have a very hard time scoring.

Their no better than us on offense. Joe Flacco can stack up to Big Ben, as can Ray Rice, Laron McClain and Derrick Mason to Ward, Holmes, and Parker. People say we're at a disadvantage because we're tired. Phooey. Their grown men. They know they've got a job to do, and their going to go out there and play their hearts out, tired or not.

Well, as we play into the second half, the game is where I thought it would be. Its extremely close, and still anyone's to win. The Raven's D has been solid as steel. It needs to continue that in the second half. If we can hold the Steelers off and manage to reach the endzone JUST ONCE, I think we can pull this thing off.

I want to apologize for my outburst earlier, guys. It wasn't necessary. I'm a better sport than that. I've played enough sports in my life to know that losing is part of the game, and when you lose you do it honorably. Its all part of the game and you have to take it in stride.

We lost the game and, frankly, I wasn't even in it anymore in the last couple minutes. The game was already lost at that point, and I was more worried about Willis McGahee than anything else. While I hate the Steelers, I have to give them credit. When McGahee went down, they ALL came out on the field, even Tomlin. That was a very honorable thing to do.

So, may both teams do well in the Super Bowl.

Refs gave the game to the Chargers? Give me a break. You know, the Chargers had to be in it to win it. The Colts were good enough that they could have (and should have) wiped the floor with the Chargers.

The owners made a big mistake by overplaying these players. The owners spoiled the players. Now these players are bugging about taking a pay cut, and a deal not being fair. They really think people are trying to hear these multi-millionaires complain in this recession, when people are literally struggling to put food on the table and looking for work?  If the players union wanted to decertify, they should have done it in July, when they would have more than enough time to work it out and get a deal done.

Title: Re: Sports Thread
Post by: phw115wvwx on February 06, 2012, 03:05:51 PM
Sorry, Alex, but the referees are not to blame here.  While the call was correct, it really didn't affect the game.  Here's what really changed the game:  The Giants had three fumbles during the game, and the Patriots recovered zero of them.  During one of those fumbles that the Patriots would have recovered, it was nullified because the Patriots defense had too many men on the field, which was quickly verified on replay with 12 guys counted by the NBC graphics.  I thought it was the biggest mistake of the game even though it was just the first quarter as the Giants scored their first touchdown two plays later to make it 9-0.

The bottom line is that the Patriots committed more severe mistakes at the most critical moments of the game than the Giants did.  You have to make your opponent pay for making errors, and the Patriots simply didn't do it.  They failed to convert when it mattered, and those dropped passes in the fourth quarter cost them dearly.  The Giants did a better job making the Patriots pay for their mistakes and making more critical plays on offense, defense, and special teams.  That's why they won Super Bowl XLVI.

At least your team even made it there and competed well, Alex.  Thirty other teams wished they could have been in your position, and your team has won three Super Bowls in the past decade.  That's still quite an achievement.

They've made it to only one Super Bowl and won it.

I'd just like to bring up another point on how criticized people are getting because they're New York fans?!?! I'm not a Giant fan, there are times when I hate the Giants, but that doesn't mean I can't root for them because I'm not a fan. WTH?  :dunno:

It's because most people take sports way too seriously. ;)  They feel like you have to support only your team and no one else despite the circumstances.  I enjoy sports for the strategy and entertainment.  I don't mind interacting with opposing fans as I try to be courteous and respectful to them.  Sure, I may feel bad if my team loses, but it's still just a game.  Life teaches you that lesson very quickly as you get older.

Well, 2013 is off to a crazy start in the sports world.  During the Outback Bowl between Michigan and South Carolina about an hour ago, the referee screwed up determining whether a first down had been gained during a chain measurement.  It was a critical call as Michigan had just ran a fake punt in the 4th quarter during a 1-point game!

Michigan vs South Carolina First Down that really wasnt. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZSJgKCqEgY#ws)

Fortunately, poetic justice was served on the very next play, and the commentary was hilariously biased.

While Atlanta almost choked the game away in the fourth quarter, Seattle absolutely blew it in the first half by not scoring a single point.  Seattle's last possession in the first half was atrocious.  How do you fail to score anything because the clock ran out to halftime when you reach the red zone with 42 seconds left?  Inexcusable! :hammer:

If Seattle would have just got on the board before the half, it would have given them a little hope and momentum for the second half instead of being shut out and forced to pull off a miraculous comeback.  It turns out that only one field goal would have changed the complexion of the final seconds in Atlanta's last drive and perhaps the entire outcome of the game.

Anyway, the NFC Championship will be San Francisco at Atlanta for the 3 PM game next Sunday.  The AFC Championship will be Baltimore at New England for the 6:30 PM game afterward.

Definitely a good game.  The 49ers comeback to make it only 3-point game after being down 28-6 before the power outage was really something!

BTW, love how the power outage is weather.com's top story right now.  Of course, somewhere in the article they had to mention that "Weather was not a factor."

I guess the Superdome wasn't so "super" for about half an hour.  It was rather creepy to see the stadium like that.   It sure made it exciting, though.  With that being said, how do you expect to have what amounts to a huge party and not have something break?

If the power outage had happened in the second quarter instead, then the 49ers might have pulled it off.  The momentum shift came to late to come back from that much of a deficit.  I was rooting for the Niners to avoid seeing a northeastern team win yet again, even though I'm not a true fan of either team that was in it this time.

What happened was that Howard Schultz wanted to build a new stadium for the Sonics but nobody in Seattle (the taxpayers, the city itself, etc.) liked the idea, so instead Schultz sold the team to Clay Bennett from OKC and then the Sonics moved there and became the Thunder.

2013 is destined to be a bizarre year in the sports world.  After the infamous power failure at the Super Bowl, we now have the next weird moment to halt a sporting event:  During the NASCAR Sprint Cup Coca-Cola 600 race this evening at Charlotte, NC, a nylon rope used to guide one of the FOX network overhead cameras fell on to the track while the race was in progress.  Multiple cars ran over the rope and sustained damage that the crews had to repair, and the race was halted so that the entire rope could be removed from the track.

Unfortunately, the fallen rope also caused several injuries to fans in the stands, and a few of them had to be treated at a local hospital.  It was such an awkward scene as the TV station was directly responsible for everything that happened.  FOX is in some deep trouble now.  Here is more information about what happened:

Any hockey fans in here? I must say I was quite impressed with how the LA Kings beat the Anaheim Ducks in overtime 3-2 :bleh:
I am a bit of a hockey fan. My favorite team is the Detroit Red Wings.

My team, the Alabama Crimson Tide, came back to defeat the Auburn Tigers 55-44 last night in a rivalry simply known as the Iron Bowl.

Does anyone have any thoughts about the new contraversal college football playoff system?

IMO, I think it should an 8 team playoff. Not just 4. Would make it interesting.

The Cowboys are 8-4, and can't get their act together at home.  I've never been a fan of that shiny new stadium, which IMHO is at best a hype magnet and at worst a jinx for the home team.  In any case, the team could still have yet another 8-8 season if they try hard enough to lose.

The San Francisco 49ers have been officially eliminated from the NFL postseason, after losing to my team, the Seattle Seahawks, this afternoon. Seattle finished this game with a score of 17-7, and their record now stands at 10-4. Go Hawks!  :twothumbs:

We now have our teams for Super Bowl XLIX, the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks. Both teams will play at University Of Phoenix Stadium (the Arizona Cardinals' stadium) in Glendale, Arizona on February 1st at 6:30PM EST. The game will be broadcast on NBC. Go Hawks!  :twothumbs:

My team's already gone, so I'm going to be a big Seahawks fan in this Super Bowl, especially in regards to some unusual strategies, to put it mildly, that were allegedly used by the Pats in that last game.

(Disclaimer: I know nothing about sports.)

I thought the Patriots cheated by using underinflated balls.  (That supposedly makes them easier to catch?)  If that's the case, why are they allowed to advance to the Super Bowl?

A former Tampa Bay Buc quarterback admitted doing the same in a super bowl cheating in sports will happen colts are just mad they couldn't use fake crowd noise to their advantage in their stadium Pats will hopefully win and other nfl teams cheat. So far NFL hasn't charged the pats of cheating do I stand by my team.

I hate the Hawks and couldn't care less about the Patriots. So this will be yet another Super Bowl where I'm more interested in the food.

Because the NFL is a crappy organization that won't punish teams like it should.  If anything, I'm sure the Patriots will be charged a $10,000 fine or something, which basically equates to a penny in the world of football.

The Patriots defeated the Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX, final score 28-24. I thought Seattle really was going to make it during those final moments of the game, but at around 20 seconds to go in the fourth quarter, the Pats' rookie CB Malcolm Butler intercepted the ball at the Hawks' 1-yard line.  :pinch:

Despite Seattle's loss, I'd say this was a pretty interesting game overall.  I was surprised the Hawks made it this far, but they worked real hard until the end. They had a terrific season, and I hope it goes down well again for them next year.

Well, we are a few weeks into the 2015 MLB season, and here are the current leaders of the divisions:

AL East: Tie between the Red Sox, Yankees, and Rays

AL Central: Royals (my favorite team, the Tigers, are just one game back)

AL West: Astros

NL East: Mets

NL Central: Cardinals

NL West: Dodgers

Any predictions as to who will win the World Series this year? As of right now, the Vegas odds have the Tigers, Dodgers, and Nationals all tied for the top spot at 8:1 for winning the 2015 WS. The Tigers started very hot, with a formidable offense and strong pitching, despite losing Max Scherzer to the Nationals. However, they have cooled a bit in terms of hitting and pitching over the past several games, so hopefully they can regain control. The Nationals really are not performing all that well right now, mainly due to their poor defense, and are currently in 3rd place in the NL East with a 7-11 record. The Dodgers are in first place in the NL West division, and they have fairly good hitting and pitching, so I can definitely see them being a contender.

My Rangers are a miserable failure.  Only they could be ahead 5-0 and then let the A's score seven unanswered runs.  This is shameful.

I've heard quite a bit of noise about the Mariners getting the AL and the Nationals topping the NL, but I ultimately predict the Mariners will win the whole thing.

My Seahawks are off to the playoffs for a fourth consecutive season!  After defeating the Cleveland Browns yesterday, Seattle clinched a berth in the Wild Card playoffs. Their record now stands at 9 and 5. Despite season-ending injuries to some key players (e.g. RB Marshawn Lynch, rookie RB Thomas Rawls and TE Jimmy Graham) the team still managed to pull through what seemed to be a tough season for them. Let's go Hawks!  B)

My Seattle Mariners came dangerously close to making it to the playoffs, but after a heart-piercing defeat by Oakland last night (score was 9 to 8 in the 10th inning) their postseason hopes quickly crumbled to dust. :(  But overall, I'd say this was probably a pretty great season for the M's  despite it now being 15 years since the last time they made the playoffs. Oh well, there's always next season. :itsok:

Apologies for double-posting BTW.
