Hmm. We were supposed to get report cards last Thursday, but never did. Not sure I'd feel comfortable sharing my grades here, but we shall see. :)

First marking period ends today, current averages for 1st MP as of today:

English 3: 99% A
Spanish 2: 100% A
Math HSPA 3: 93% A
Chemistry: 93% A
US History 2: 89% B
Health 3: 92% A
Special Ed. Study Skills: 97% A

Figures, I was just 1% shy of getting straight A's.  :hmm:

I think it's time I move to higher levels for some of the classes I'm getting really high grades in.

I notice you're in an HSPA prep math class... good luck on them in March! I barely passed the Language Arts section... 4 points lower and I would have been in a remedial course my Senior year... I got an above average in Math with 261... you need 200 to pass, anything above 250 is above average...

For all who don't know what the HSPA is, it's the High School Proficiency Assessment, the NJ graduation requirement test taken as a Junior to see if you're able to pass to graduate. If you fail one or both parts, you're required to take a remedial course and try again in October of your Senior Year. If you fail again, you take it in March. IF you fail again, you won't get a high school diploma and won't graduate. Unless your IEP specifically says you're not required to take it, then you have to. You'll get a certificate of attendance of High School, but you won't get a diploma because you failed. I think that's rather harsh, but still...

I believe I got slightly below 200 on the GEPA (8th grade assessment class) two years ago, which was why I was placed in the HSPA prep classes. My English class is also an HSPA, just forgot to note that. Hopefully I pass it so I don't have to worry about retaking it or taking special courses.

It's amazing how people care so much about grades. I'm currently failing 2 classes, but that doesn't mean I'm an idiot. I have an above average IQ for my age.

I would much rather be someone who can do math without the use of a calculator. The problem with the country today is that most Americans require a calculator to do the basic and simplest of math, and that bothers me a lot.

Sorry Vic, but Math is pretty much the most important subject that you use every single day in life.
Title: Re: Report cards
Post by: Localonthe8s on November 05, 2008, 05:51:13 PM
I realize that but if it's so important then why do standardized tests have so little questions on Math? It's mainly reading and language arts, and Math is only in 2 out of 6 parts of the test. Plus in my school, it's an elective in your senior year.

I find Algebra important, you need to find rates, formulas, percentages, etc but Geometry and Trigonometry= pointless.

I agree with that. Geometry and Trig are only important if your career depends on it. Other than that, you don't need it in your every day life. As for algebra, we use it almost every day without realizing. You'd be surprised how much algebra I use to create my emulations.

So it's similar to what we here in PA have - the PSSAs (Pennsylvania System of School Assessment).

I took PSSA's back in 5th-7th grade. I don't remember how well I did in them though.

Tyler - I'm not a big fan of Spanish either. I have no idea how I managed to get a 100% average in it though. Maybe I should move up from Level 4 (basic) to 3 (modified academic) for that.

Why do some schools consider low 90's as B's and low 80's as C's? That's kind of pointless, IMO.

Title: Re: Report cards

In Our school

it's 97-100 A+
93-96 A
90-92 B+
85-89 B
81-84 C+
75-80 C
71-74 D+
68-70 D
69 or below F

I wish the grading system was more lax like other schools. I can get a 80 that's worth having a B but instead get a low C intead. <_<

I took Biology CP in 10th grade, and Chemistry I Honors in 11th grade... the normal requirement for Honors Chemistry is Biology I Honors, but I was able to bypass that requirement by getting 2 recommendations for Honors Chemistry because I got high A's in Bio. Bio was eaaasy.... Chemistry a bit tougher, but Physics was easy because I chose to not take Honors Physics, and it's a good thing I didn't... Too many requirements, too many 15 page packets to complete each week, etc... I couldn't handle it.

I think that is like a study hall except it's a special education course and also where the teachers give you grades, help you with work, help with social issues, build relationships, etc. I'm in that too, but we call it individual studies. I have two of those periods every day (first and last period).

Right.

It's social half hour basically.  We are suppose to build relationships..and all that garbage, but we dont.  we sit and talk..and the teacher doesn't stop us.  The only reason we have this advisory (every other wednesday), is so the school could get fuding for new windows.

Earth Science if offered 9-12th grade.  I took Biology 9th, Chemistry 10th, and Physics 11th.... so I figured to end it with an easier course :P

I have a class like that at my school. I'm a tutor for that class this semester.

Probably the dumbest thing you can do.

I don't know why, but I hate it on how people say that a C- is bad. In my classes, I'd love to take that score. No, i'm not stupid, but I just had lack of turning in homework. But, I am passing all of my classes slightly. I now am all D's and up (Luckily). I thought that I was going to fail. I did learn from this trimester though... "At the time doing work may not be first priority, but in the future you will regret it."

My school counts D's as a pass... but E's and F's are a fail.

I'm just talking about the percentage in general. No, they merge the E's with the F's. Our school system is screwed up... a lot.

Josh, in response to you, my science teacher is the same way (but never swore in front of the class). The Science teacher in the other team swore a lot in class (and she is the devil). We have 2 teams in my grade... M2SJ, and AR. I'm on M2SJ.

Back when I was in High school, I used to get Ds and Fs, cos I used to get suspended a lot.
But, the courses I excelled in were:

SBA: B
Biology/Greenhouse: A
Chorus:A (I don't sing, I rap, but you have to be extremely dumb or extremely ratchet to fail)
English:B

Some of my teachers told me beforehand what my grade would be, so that I would not cuss them out

Yeah, it's one of the hardest grading systems. It sucks too because it used to be where a 100-90 was an A, 89-80 was a B, 79-70 was a C, 69-60 was a D and 59 or below was an F, then it got changed two years ago..  :(

When I was in High School our system was like this.
100-92 - A
91-82 - B
81-72 - C
71-62 - D
62 - Below - F

Now I'm in college and we don't get quarterly grades but the semester is over May 1st so I'll post my final grades then... if they're good enough to post. I can tell you right now I have an 87% in my Composition 1100 class but I just turned in a 150 point paper so that will change things.

Yeah, and what is weird is that usually the people who are a distraction and make the class harder are the people who do the best in the class. I had Algebra this year with two brothers (both same age as me) who sat directly in front of me and would always bug me. Matt and Mike (yes Mike) Pokryfki would always turn around and say something stupid or do something to get a reaction out of me. Most of the time I wouldn't give it to them but they keep doing it anyway. I believe they are the reason I ended the semester with a C+ in that class.

If I was in your situation, I would've talked to the teacher or my guidance counselor. If there is more than one period of the mass class you were taking, you could've asked your counselor to change your class schedule, so you wouldn't be distracted.

Two math courses may seem hard but it really isn't, unless you're taking two harder courses like statistics and pre-cal at once then it could be. Consumer math is easy, all it involves really is basic arithmetic math.

Technically I didn't have to take any math classes this year, but I decided to take two this year (and another 1-2 next year) to help fulfill my college/career requirements.

Well my unweighted rank was around 30 or so out of 652 in the class, but my weighted was in the 300's (since I'm not in any advanced/honors courses).

I got two B's and a D in my finals (only had to take three), but my final grades were five A's and two B's IIRC.

Lucky all you TWC fans are so smart, but yeah, here's mine:

Physics        70 C (dropped due to my final which was like a 40%)
Algebra 2    94 A (raised it due to my 95 in the final)
English        77 C (wish it was a B, the final was hard, but got a 60% sadly)
Spanish 2    88 B (got a 99 on the final raised it from an 84)
US History   77 C (got a C on the final, and C on the final research presentation not what I wanted)

Overall GPA: 2.6 (wow, a dramatic drop from last year's 3.2 GPA.  But lucky I'm taking AP Calculus next  year since I'm taking Pre-Cal at a community college in the Summer. Hope I pass with a C or higher and get into AP Calculus. :D If not my other option is AP Statistics.

Looking through all these grades, I'll say this: I can HARDLY wait for you folks to hit college (especially if you are going into meteorology or engineering). You'll be all suave going into the exam room, thinking about Friday night and hooking up with a few beers and ladies, and then Monday BOOM, you get a D on the Calc II Midterm. Worth 20% of the grade. And then you go home crying to the elders.

I'll say this: I wish I could get the grades I did in High School again. You'll realize after about 2 years of higher education that high school teachers were SERIOUSLY doorknobs when it came to teaching his/her subjects.

BTW to stick with the subject, I'll give my grades for the past year or so:

Sorted by grade:

A:
-Meteorology Internship

A-
-Intro to Cultural Geography
-Understanding Climate Change
-Economic Geography
-Natural Hazards
-Intro to Landforms
-Landscape Ecology
-Thinking Geographically

B+
-Geography and Statistics

B-

-Biogeography

The B- actually made me miss the Dean's List for the spring semester; made it the fall. (And the spring semester was 5 classes straight, 2 days a week, 3 classes 1 day a week, and 1 class 1 day a week. Although it sounds like a typical high school day, remember this: No breaks, no lunch, and the stuff's 100x harder to learn. And then you take it home for the next day with 5 hours of HW.)

Those are all fun classes you're taking Steve. I'd be interested in taking all of 'em in college. What year in college do you have to be to take those courses? Don't you have to take Calculus , Linear Algebra and other math classes?

I know that to be a meteorologist you need great math skills, but do OCM's really do alot of math?
Title: Re: Report cards
Post by: P71nnacle on July 17, 2010, 11:23:56 PM
Yea, it's kind of messy right now. I bailed out of Meteorology last year around this time after finding out I couldn't do the math. But there are lots of people who can do it, just not me  :hmm: Usually, the mathematical part's in the classes - most operational and TV meteorologists tend to NOT use it (at least in my experience). TBH, there's not a lot of jobs in the field, regardless....and OCM's make no more than $25k out of school and usually don't make big bucks for the workload.

I just hope everyone's as good in college as they are in high school - usually the first year of college separates the wheat from the chaff. You will have to work harder in college, because the material is harder and you're expected to know the material better with little or no help from the actual instructor. It's not all parties, dorm lounging, and everything. I've been in college six years - my social life is terrible. :)

---BUMP---

My Midterm Grades (As of Today; Actually subject to change by week's end)

Vector Graphics/Adobe Illustrator (M&W; 9:10-11:00am) - 82% B  :D
Rastering/Photoshop (T&R; 9:10-11:30am) - 94% A+
Intro to Computers (Required class/F only; 1-4:50pm) -87% B+  :D

Overall Average (As of today): 88% (B+) :)

NOTE: The intro computer class is so long to allow those students who don't have computer/internet access more ample time to work on classwork/projects right during class, it's actually only about half the length.

These were my final grades from the Fall 2012 semester.

Intro to Design/Media Production - 84% B
Interpersonal/Professional Development (Work Ethics) - 85% B
Foundations of Mathematics - 78% C

Overall Average: 82%

Stupid math class totally f :censored: ked up my average. Ah well, it's been no secret I greatly despise and hate math with a passion since HS. At least this semester is an excellent improvement over last semester and I'm enjoying it more.
