I don't think memory has anything to do with anything, other than that Macs are capable of having considerably more memory than PC's.
-
really? My Vaio has a 512 MB memory.
-
I noticed that you've got the TWN logos on your desktop... Working on some TWN projects?
I didn't see any TWN logos on his desktop.
I likw Macs because they dont take that much memory/RAM that PCs do.
They take up about the same amount. The newest Macs come with at least 512 MB or 1 GB of RAM, and PC's nowadays are about the same, too.
No, they don't even ship with 512 anymore, except for maybe the mini.
-
Sheesh, just asking <_<
I was going to say, are you sure you arn't confusing him with me? :P
Stephen, its called like "logo_trans" look harder.
-
No, they don't even ship with 512 anymore, except for maybe the mini.
Last I checked, the standard configuration for the mini includes 1 GB of RAM, so, yeah, you're right, Macs don't ship with 512 MB at all anymore.
-
Stephen, its called like "logo_trans" look harder.
Now I see it. ;)
-

Yep, at last check the Mac Pro (the Intel Power Mac) holds up to 16 GB. I don't know any PC that can hold that amount.

I ordered a Mini Mac a few weeks back, and it came with 512MB :/

Aww, you poor thing. :D How is it? Honestly, I'ved only used one in the Apple Store.
-

Must have been an older Mini. If you purchase one straight from the Apple Store, it'll have 1 gig: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?nnmm=browse&mco=7B72367D&node=home/shop_mac/family/mac_mini

I love the new iBooks
-
I love the new iBooks
You mean MacBooks, right? ;)
-
Yes
-
iBooks haven't been produced since early '06
-
Yes they're no longer in prodcution. I like it that they're lightweight and compact
-
I like mine. I plan on getting a 17" MacBook Pro when i graduate 8th in June.
-
Yes they're no longer in prodcution. I like it that they're lightweight and compact
So are MacBooks (and if you're looking for EXTREMELY lightweight and compact, the MacBook Air, it's only 3 pounds! :o) ;)
-
The MacBook Air is a road apple.
-
The later iBooks were so plain looking. It was almost 100% white. I liked the "clamshell" ones that came in different colors.
-
The later iBooks were so plain looking. It was almost 100% white.
I prefer simple.
-
I don't care about color, I like something that's sleek. Can't wait till i get a MBP!
-
I don't care about color, I like something that's sleek.
Same here. I'd rather have something sleek than something with all the colors of the rainbow (no offense to the Clamshell iBooks ;)).
-
I owned a clamshell. Ugly as hell.
-
What Macs have sleek designs?
-
What Macs have sleek designs?
Uhh...All of them...
-
No you said the ibook was plain looking
-
Its still sleek.
-
What's the best Mac?
-
Currently, MacPro
-
wow, the MacPro has some sexy looking edges :P
-
wow, the MacPro has some sexy looking edges :P
But, it costs a million dollars because it was intended for professional use (the same thing is basically the case for the MacBook Pro as well). ;)
-
Why is the screen so big?
-
Macs are capable of having considerably more memory than PC's.
But Macs tend to use that memory more efficiently.
-
Why is the screen so big?
Because it can be. They have a 30 inch Cinema display.
I remember when the G5 came out, i nearly sh*t myself
-
Why?
-
Why?
<_< Why what.
-
Why is the screen so big?
Like I told you, the Mac Pro is for professionals. The big screen is needed, especially for video editing, because professionals tend to do more (specifically, at the same time) than the average user.
-
Why?
<_< Why what.
Did ypu shit yourself when the G5 came out....I think.
-
Why because of this?

-
Because it was THE most advanced computer at the time, and incredibly visually appealing. What else could it possibly be.
-
How much was it?
-
Go look on Mactracker or Everymac.com
-
Look at what i found describing the MacPro:
Features Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors up to 3.2GHz. ... Introducing all-new, high-end, blow-you-away graphics. ...
-
That sounds about right. It's probably the world's most advanced publically-available computer
-

Maybe i should get one then. :thrilled:
-

Go for it if you have about $4000 to waste. :P

$4000 - $18000 :D
-
4000?
Hmm, my vaio costed me 2500
-
Its a PC.
Don't think of it as a waste, thing of it as an investment. :D
-
Don't think of it as a waste, thing of it as an investment. :D
It is a waste if you don't plan on using it for professional use. You don't need a quad-core processor to perform everyday tasks.

Agreed. That's a gigantic waste.
-
Well obviously. If you have a genuine use for one, then its an investment.
-
Why has the cost of the Power Mac gone up? Back in the late 90's when I got our G3 it was $1,500. Now it's close to $3,000.
-
Because technology is better...
and, they don't use PowerPC chips anymore. But i don't think that has much to do with it.
-
But the prices of most of the other Apple computers have gone down...
-
Well its because the Mac Pro is such an incredibly advanced computer.
-
yeah it has a quad-core dual compressor whic is extremely powerful
-
yeah it has a quad-core dual compressor whic is extremely powerful
It actually has an 8-core processor now.
-
It's not that. Its the architecture and expandability options, mainly.
-
and its sleek deisgin
-
No.
-
No what?
-
The design has absolutely nothing to do with it.
-
Which Macs have built-in tv tuners?
-
None.
Only ones from the 90's if you wanted that option.
-
They had tv tuners back then?
-
None.
Only ones from the 90's if you wanted that option.
Oh yeah, they had like the RCA component plugs didnt they? On the back?
-
They had tv tuners back then?
Yes. They've had TV Tuners since the begining of television.
-
Are the older Macs better than the new ones?
-
None.
Only ones from the 90's if you wanted that option.
Oh yeah, they had like the RCA component plugs didnt they? On the back?
They had several video options. the Apple TV/Video System, which provided a TV Tuner (with a coaxial connection) and a Video Card (With RCA and S-Video inputs). Both are installed together in seperate slos.
I can provide pics if desired..
-
Pics.
The remote that comes with it is cool. You can turn on the Mac from it, change channels, volume, inputs, and even open the application.
Also, any other TV remote works on it too!
-
Nice. But the images are too big :P
-
Yeah its best not to click the thumbnails.
-
Can u run the latest OS for Mac in Apple Lisa?
-
Can u run the latest OS for Mac in Apple Lisa?
Of course not. The Lisa is FAR from meeting the requirements for OS X.
-
You can't even run OS 7. Possibly not even 6, not sure though.
-
Correction: It can't run any Mac OS. it only runs Lisa OS.
-
Is Lisa OS ancient?
-
Is Lisa OS ancient?
Yes.
-
Is Lisa OS ancient?
No, it's very modern. It's an edition of Windows Vista. :P
-

I thought so! :P
-
Eww, Vista...
-
Eww, Vista...
I thought you liked Vista.
-
I thought you liked Vista.
Same here. I could've sworn a while back, Gil, that you were raving so much about Vista. I guess you changed your mind?
-
Eww, Vista...
i tought u liked it?
-
I used to. Then i realized how awful it is. Its even worse than XP, and nothing is compatible. Plus, its just another ripoff of Mac OS.
-
LOL, why aren't I surprised to see that you've changed your opinions of Vista. :P
-
I switch opinions a lot. I read up about things, then start thinking about it. THen i realize its true.
I HATE Microsoft.
-

That wouldn't be so bad if we didn't argue about it beforehand. :P

-
Are Macs cheaper than regular PCs?
No, Macs cost more.
-
LOL, Macs cost a helluva lot more. But again, you get what you pay for.
-
Have i showed my Performa that i got earlier this month? I bought it on eBay for $1 and was able to pick it up locally, without shipping charges.

This computer is from 1994. I can post specs if desired. It is an AIO, meaning the monitor and computer are built into eachother.
-
Wow, that's really neat! B)
-
Yeah, this was one of the last Macintoshes to use the Motorola 68k processors, during the switch the PowerPC in 1994-1996.
-
Does anyone have a 7.5.3 CD? I know its downloadable for free from Apple, but i cannot figure it out for the life of me.
-
Very nice Performa! Brings back memories. Those are what they had in the computer labs at my middle school.
-
Yes, they had those as well as Power Mac 5400's at my elementary school. However, in 2003/2004, they replaced them with awful Compaqs. Believe it or not, the Macs were better (and less prone to problems) than the newer Compaq computers.
I once owned a 5400. Very nice machine.

Oh I definitley believe that. There's no doubt in my mind about that.
-
It's kind of interesting how schools these days are replacing old Macs, with extremely cheaper computers, that are a helluva lot less reliable, harder to use, and in some cases, slower than the 14 year old Macs! Doesn't make a lot of sense. Macs are a lot easier to use for kids, seeing as its a very simple OS. Schools don't really need new technology either, cause they are mainly using computers for learning to type, typing papers, and playing games, right? Just doesn't seem sensible, or economical.

I agree. I like the Macs and yet in my school they replace them with these stupid PCs with os Vista
-
Hah, that must be a REAL treat for both the students and staff.
My school has bought a lot of new computers this past month, undoubtedly shipped with Vista, but they put XP pro on them instead.
-
My art research uses macs with safari
-
My school has some new Dells (yuck) with XP Pro, but originally came with Vista.
-
Of course. Macs are the only option for fine arts.
My brother is studying graphic design at U of I. All of the labs (except maybe 1 on the entire campus) are Macs, either Mac Mini's or Power Mac G5's, all with 30 inch monitors.
-
I'm prbably the only one whose school uses Vista
-
but my CAD class uses compaq comps prob because of the graphic Cards
-
Why? Macs have far better graphics cards that come standard.
-
Because my School is cheap :(
-
Why? Macs have far better graphics cards that come standard.
My neighbor's a retard. He bought an Apple TV system for no reason and he doesnt even have a computer
-
That's...umm...interesting. Then again, 97% of all Americans are absolute idiots...
-
That's...umm...interesting. Then again, 97% of all Americans are absolute idiots...
So true <_<
-
my school is just now making the transition to mac computers, well laptops anyway. i'm sure later after I graduate full installation of mac desktops and laptops would be complete.
-
You are VERY lucky.
-
Yes. Mac Laptops are very nice
-
My school uses nothing but Macs. I use, every morning, a black MacBook for the school's morning show production. More specifically, what I basically do is update (and then display on the show) the graphics for the show. All the graphics, main show opener, segment openers, backgrounds, information slides, etc. are contained within a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation. It may seem like a "cheap" way of doing things, but it actually works quite well, and it doesn't take long to update, about 5-10 minutes, depending on what content we're airing that day.
One day, while we were on air live, for some reason, PowerPoint decided to crash. :P Luckily, it hasn't done so since that day. :)
-
yeah. i love 'em. i might just steal one :whistling: hahaha :P
-
Oh how much I would love a Mac Pro...
-
The very first cell phone as well as all of the 68k and PowerPC processors used in Apple Computers from 1990 to 2003 were built just 4 miles from my house. B)

I was not aware that Apple made set-top boxes in the mid 90's. They were only prototypes, though.

Attention Mac Fans-I just picked up an Imation USB Superdisk drive for the Mac. I also have various Mac software, including Office 2001, StuffIt Deluxe, Quicken 2004, and Roxio Creator Plus.
If your interested, let me know. :sunglasses:
-
Is it needed to have anti-virus software on a Mac? Mac viruses are extrmemely rare

I think my dad could use Office 2001. He currently has Office 1998 on his G3!
-
I don't think so. But being safe is better than being sorry.
Once again, since Vic jsut HAD to post something completley irrelevant:

Mike, let me know if your/he's interested.
-
Since Mike posted first, he gets first dibs on the Office 2001. If he doesn't want it, I'll take everything. Let me know how much you want for it all. :)
-
As with the Mac, make me an offer.
Mike has til tomorrow to let me know. It shouldn't take longer than that to figure out if his father is interested.
-
As with the Mac, make me an offer.
The mac? I thought you said you were going to "try something" and get back to me.
-
I did say that. I'm still working on that. So for now, let's stick to the other stuff. I'll lt you know what is going on with the Mac.
-
Gil, I haven't heard from Mike on Office 2001, so everything is yours if you make me an offer. :sunglasses:
-
I'm not interested in it. I was just sharing that my dad still has a very old version of Office on his computer.

No, you said you thought he could use Office 2001. <_<
Thanks for waiting so long to let me know. <_<

Got a question: Can Office 2001 run on my PowerMac 6500?
-
Got a question: Can Office 2001 run on my PowerMac 6500?
Yes
-
Thank you for your response Vic. I want to make sure that's true though, so I;m going to wait for Billy , Stephen, or Gil to reply. I'm not saying you don't know, just that I know they DO.
-
Billy, do you have a take on this?
-
It will run.
-
Alright, now I'm confident. :sunglasses:
Again Vic, its not that I didn't believe you. I just wanted to hear it from someone who I KNOW knows alot about Mac's. :sunglasses:
-
No problem, my brother uses a Mac which is how i knew
-
Oh, I wasn't aware of that. :cool3:
-
Yes, I've had it on a PM 5400 running OS 8.6
-
So is there a general rule for what software will work on the 6500? I've seen alot of software I'd be interested in, I just don't know what works and what don't.
-
if it meets the system requirements of the software, it will work. Though the amount of memory and drive space will affect how well it runs.
Software is software, no matter what platform, no matter how old. If it meets the requirements it will work. Macs are no exception.
-
So I'm thinkin' about saving up for a macbook. i'm getting way to tired of windows, and plus i'll probably need it for college. I have a laptop now, though its windows, and it's broken. haha should probably get it fixed.
-
I've got a broken laptop too. Not sure how to fix it (AC adapter port came off the motherboard) so I just put it up on Ebay. So far its going for $35 with about 5 days left. :thrilled:
I'd like to get a MacBook sometime. Not sure that I'll be able to afford one anytime soon though. :(
What's the latest version of Photoshop that will run on the PowerMac 6500?
-
I'd like to get a MacBook too but my TV Tuner is not compatible with Macs <_<
-
i decided to save up for one because they're basically awesome. i think i've already stated somewhere in this thread that my school is making the transition from windows to macs, and i love 'em.
-
Al, i'f your going to use it for college, definitely wait. Once your actually in college, you can get a discount, which would help if you wanted to get a more expensive Mac.
Gary, I have Photoshop 6 on my Performa 6400. Not sure what 7's requirements are, but anything 6 or under would work.
-
I'd like to get a MacBook sometime. Not sure that I'll be able to afford one anytime soon though. :(
If you're on a tight budget, maybe you could get a Mini. If you already have a monitor, keyboard, and mouse, you're in business the minute you get it.
-

That's actually what I'm considering to get as my first Mac (which will hopefully be sometime this year).
-
Its not very powerfull though. If you don't plan on doing many intensive tasks/programs, a mini would be an offordablesdasegasg option.
-
I've actually considered getting a used Intel Mac Mini (from eBay) to use as a media server or entertainment center since it's a small enough computer to fit inside my TV cabinet.
-

It's powerful enough for my needs, though. I guess you could say it's an "offordablesdasegasg" option. :P

Hah, i read something on the net a week ago, someone did just that, but with a Power Mac 6100 (the very first power mac). It was just as effective as a Mac Mini. He wrote custom software for it and everything.
-
Is anyone good with FileMaker Pro 9? (Pro 9 Advanced, to be specific)
-
I was looking on craigslist yesterday, and I saw a local listing for a Blue & White Power Mac G3 for $100... but the listing is nearly two weeks old so its probably gone by now. Does $100 for it seem like a good deal?
The specs are:
Power Mac G3, good condition, $100 OBO
tower only
300 MHz PowerPC G3
320 MB memory (1 x 64 MB, 1 x 256 MB)
80 GB Western Digital hard drive (with Mac OS X v10.4.11 installed)
8 MB VRAM video
CD-ROM Drive, Zip 100 Drive
Ethernet
Think I should contact the seller anyway to see if it's still available?
EDIT:
I just came across a newer listing for an iMac G3 for $20. Is this a good deal?
Imac G3 333mhz tray loader (blueberry), 64mb RAM, 6gb hard drive, OS 9
No keyboard or mouse, but ANY USB Keyboard and mouse will work.
And...this one: MacBook for $435.
I recently upgraded to a 17 inch MacBook Pro so I am selling my 13.3 inch MacBook for $435. The laptop has 2.16GHz processor Intel Core 2 Duo, large 120 Gb hard, 2 Gb memory, iSight camera, Super Drive. The price is $435.
Think I should pursue any of these sales?
-
20 dollars for a G3? That's a bargain!

I'd go for the MacBook. The price is incredibly cheap compared to the original price (more than half), and those specs are awesome. If you go for the MacBook, you'd get a hell of a lot more bang for the buck, so to speak.

That's what I was thinking, but it just seems too good to be true for that price. I want to email the seller first ask ask if everything works with it and ask if there is any warranty (Apple Care or whatever) still on it. I don't want to dish out $400+ on anything and have it break on me right after I get it.
Also, I plan to inquire about that $20 iMac. That definitely looks like a deal.
-
If you want a desktop, go for the Power Mac (if it's still available). Although it has a lower processor speed, it has more memory and other better features, and is also a lot easier to do maintenence in those models. I've had one of those for about nine years now.

That iMac is a great deal. I'd certainly check into it.

I've just gone ahead and sent emails to all three sellers. I'm really doubting that the PowerMac G3 is still available because the listing is over two weeks old, but the iMac and MacBook may be possibilities.
-

Yeah its unlikely that the PowerMac G3 is still available, but you never know it could be. Usually ad's are removed when the item sells, or at the very least a notation is added stating that the item was sold.

I got a very quick reply from the guy with the iMac.
Someone is supposed to pick it up in an hour or so, if that falls through I'll let you know. Thanks!
-
I thought you hated Mac OS?
-
I thought you hated Mac OS?
I don't really hate it, I just think it can get annoying at times. And I can always run Linux if Mac OS gets too out of hand. ;)
:P
-
Thats true. As long as its not Windows, its fine. Though i don't really see why you'd buy a Mac without the intent of running Mac OS, seeing as Windows and Linux can run jsut about ANY computer, seems like a waste.

If I can get any of these Macs, I'll definitely give Mac OS a try. Could OS X run on that iMac G3? Or will it be pushing it with 64 MB RAM?

Upgrade RAM. I remember my iBook (old one) had 64 MB of RAM, and it didn't meet the requirements of Jag.

You CAN run OS X on that iMac, but you'll definitely need to upgrade the RAM. No version of OS X will run with 64 MB of RAM.

You could probably run one of the earlier versions of X.
-
I stand corrected, you CAN run OS X with 64mb of RAM, but the only version AFAIK will support this is Cheetah (OS X 10.0). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_X_10.0#System_requirements
However, the earlier versions of OS X were known for performance issues, so I wouldn't do it unless you upgraded the RAM up to at least 128 MB.
-
Gil, if you want to socialize, that's fine. But keep the attitude away. The NEXT time you give ANY attitude, even a little, your gone.
As for X, see Stephens post.
-
No one EVER uses 10.0. Ever. Its extremely unstable and nothing is compatible. If you do get it, do not use it.
-
How oculd 10.0 be any worse than 9 or any previous version? Did Apple catch MS Syndrome?
-
How oculd 10.0 be any worse than 9 or any previous version? Did Apple catch MS Syndrome?
Have you ever USED 10.0?? You'd know what i'm talking about. even 8 would probably be better than .0. Maybe a little exaggerating, but still, its useless. Wipe any hard drive that comes with 10.0
9 wouldn't be too bad with the iMac. The only problem is that it would be slow.

So then Apple HAS taken a page out of Microsoft's book.

I don't follow...
What applications do you plan to run?

Last I checked Microsoft had mastered the art of issuing new OS's that are worse than their predecessors. In fact, it ought to be an MS trademark.
-
Last I knew, 10.0 was only a Beta/Prototype. I don't know if it was even massly released. 10.1 was the first real version.
-
I just got a reply from the guy with the PowerMac G3, and it's still available! :thrilled:
-
Well you'd know more than I would about that part of things.

Is that including shipping? Ebay they usually go for $30-60 without shipping.

I found it on craigslist. So either I'd have go and pick it up or the seller would have to deliver it.
-
Well they do go for cheaper, but specs vary so much, as well as condition, and included items. It's your choice.
-
I just got a reply from the guy with the PowerMac G3, and it's still available! :thrilled:
I would get it, then. It's not a bad machine at all. B)
-
Now that I have looked into it (like checking eBay and asking a few other people I know), I don't think $100 is a very good deal for the G3, especially when I see higher spec PowerMac G4s going for less than $100 on eBay.

Hey guys, would Photoshop 7 run on my Power Mac?

it should according to the adobe site

didn't I already tell you that Photoshop would work?? You asked me like a week ago or something.

I asked about Office. ;)

I thought you asked about Photoshop too.

Nope, not until today. :sunglasses:

I want a Mac, but it cost alot for me.

Buy a used one...
Speaking of Macs, I just started Art last week, and today for the first time, i noticed the teacher had a Mini on her desk, connected to the school's HP monitor and wireless keyboard/mighty mouse. Kinda interesting seeing as there are no other Macs in the school.

Sorry to burst your ego bubble here, Gil, but Macs, just like any other computer, can experience problems.

All experience problems, but Macs hardly experience any, in terms of hardware issues, compared to PC's.
-
You must be living in a fantasy world Gil. all computers are made of the same stuff. Therefore, all computers have problems. Buying a Mac won't guarantee you anything, other than a slimmer wallet. :whistling:
-
Well you've obviously never used a Mac within the past couple years or so...
-
Are they made of something PC's aren't? Last I checked all computers are made of the same stuff.
-
Nope. They use higher qualities drives and components than most PC computers, which is why hardware problems are rare. In terms of PC's v.s. Macs, you get what you pay for.
-
Sure Gil. Sure.
-
I'm just telling you what's true. Why do you think they cost so much more than PC's? If they used the same EXACT parts, try $1,000 cheaper, and get a 10x crappier machine.
-
Because they're ripoff's, that;s why. The same reason iPods cost 30 times more than an ordinary mp3 player.
-
Not in the least bit. Macs can do things PC's could never dream of doing, or at least, in half the time, with considerably less resource consumption. Why do you think people in the productivity field (graphic design, music, etc.) use Macs exclusively? Discussion closed. :)
-
That's about the only thing Mac's really have over PC's. Otherwise, your waisting money.
-
That's about the only thing Mac's really have over PC's. Otherwise, your waisting money.
I can agree with that. If all you're doing is web browsing and similar stuff, then a Mac isn't the right choice. But if you want a stable, productive, powerfull machine, then it's really only choice (as opposed to Linux).
EDIT: maybe this should be merged into the Mac Discussion thread.
-
I don't know anything about Linux, so I can't comment there, but according to your theory, 99.9% of the population has no use for a Mac. :whistling:
-
That's an extremely inaccurate percentage. You may not realize, but lots of things today are made using macs. Take movies for example. 99% made on Mac. same with music, TV, etc.
-

And guess what? Those Mac's are used by less than a percent of our country's total population.

Exactly. Macs have such an insignificant market share... My question is if Macs were so good, then why don't more people use them?
-
lol. more and more people switch to mac every single day, because they are fed up with the PC-Microsoft B.S. Kudos to them.
-
LOL, I've seen no proof of that. I've seen the PC market continue to get larger and larger, but I've seen no numbers that suggest that the Mac market is growing at any appreciable rate.
At least Billy gets it.

Oh yeah, and I just suppose Vista did WONDERS to the PC market...

well actually, down here many school districts are switching over from Microsoft to macs...just recently my school has been making its transition to all macs, though Microsoft computers are still around campus, they're expected to be gone in the next few months, and defiantly by the beginning of the next school year. SAISD made their transition to macs a while back, many of the students seem to love them.
AHISD again, just made it's decision last year, I'm now learning that students at Alamo Heights JR. School have their own macs issued to them, while us here at the high school don't. kinda stupid, but oh well... though I'm not sure if its just a trial thing, or permanently like that.

And again, do you realize how small a number of people that is? A few schools, or a few companies, is but a fraction of the millions of people and schools and companies that make up the population of this country.
Actually Gil, Vista (and all Windows products) have always outsold Apple's OS.

yes, i do realize that. why do you treat your members as though they are stupid? seriously... i was simply stating that many schools across my area are changing over to macs. sheesh.

As much as i like Apple, Gary is correct.
I have rarely seen establushments using Macs. Only Microsoft

Outsold? Maybe. Well-received? Absolutely not. The going opinion about Vista is that it sucks. People are pissed off about this. FACT: Vista has provoked more people to buy Macs instead, because they feel ripped off my M.S.
Again, you can't make that kind of assumption, especially with businesses. It entirely depends on what the business is. Accounting/Financial businesses probably wouldn't have Macs. Graphic Design/Film/Music businesses would have nothing but. These types of businesses are increasing too.
I'm done going through this. It's quite obvious what kind of people I'm dealing with here.

My school is almost switched completely over to Mac's. I guess they are pretty good. I like using them
-
I completely took apart my iBook today. I took out the dead combo drive, as I just bought a replacement on eBay. I save money by installing it myself. It's interesting how different Macs are from PC's. It's cool.

I'm looking at a Mac Mini. Does anyone know how they are?

I'm looking at a Mac Mini. Does anyone know how they are?
Depends what you're wanting to do with it. Obviously, they are at the very bottom of the line, as far as Macs are concerned, and mid-range as far as PC's are concerned. Not very upgradeable, you have to buy everything else extra (which adds up), and isn't capable of very much. Personally, I'd go for an iMac.
-

As Gil said, it depends on what you're going to do. If you plan on doing a lot of graphics work, then you should go up to a higher range model (such as the iMac, for example). However, if you don't plan on doing those things and just using it for basic tasks (well, you can do graphics work on the Mini, but you might find yourself limited, in terms of RAM and graphics capability), then the Mini would be the most affordable option for you.
you have to buy everything else extra (which adds up)
No you don't. That's why it's called Bring Your Own Display, Keyboard, and Mouse, not Buy Your Own Display, Keyboard, and Mouse. ;)

Depends what you're wanting to do with it.
Getting used to the OS (my advisor has told me that I need to be familiar with Windows (both XP and Vista), OSX, and Linux), basic web design (text-based, maybe some graphic-based)...nothing too powerful...the most powerful thing I might do is slideshow movies.

Then the Mac Mini should do the job just fine.

It should be fine. Just note that a mini isn't very upgradeable, so you should not count on it being a long-term machine. I've also heard rumors that Apple is going to discontinue the mini in the near future, but i have no idea when.
-
Much nicer considering I get a $50-75 student discount. :thrilled:
-
IMO, the best small desktop Mac was the G4 Cube. I have no idea why they stopped making it, though (bad sales, apparently). The Mac Mini replaced it, I guess.

I was going to buy an iMac G4, but most are out of my price range. :(

Yeah, I liked the design of the Cube too (along with the other computers in that era). It was discontinued in 2001, and then there was no mini computer made by Apple until the Mac Mini came out in 2005.
