Title: I haven't been online here in a bit more than a year- what all has changed?
Post by: TechKitten on July 31, 2019, 10:43:46 PM
I'm just asking out of pure curiosity and laziness.

Honestly, not that much. Just check the “Show unread posts since your last visit” and “Show new replies to your posts” sections to see what you may have missed.

I checked that, only about two pages of posts, seems as if the place has started dying off since I signed off a year ago.

Unfortunately, it seems like a lot of fans of the past have moved on to other things. I still post new content to TWCC almost every week, though!

It's great to see that you are still maintaining and adding new content.

It is great to still have some people around though. I do agree that these days The Weather Channel has kind of turned to crap and the great days of the channel we all loved are behind us.

I'm afraid that's right. :(

Yeah I wish more people would come on here, especially ones who used to be on here all the time.  :(

Honestly this place kind of feels like my old Xbox Live account. There's people on there that haven't been online since 2009. Instead here, its just people signing off in 2015-16 and never coming back (or logging in sporadically).

Sadly, as others have already said, the majority of members left due to TWCs decline in the past decade...  it's just not the same. Every once in a blue moon I'll take a glance at the forum from afar to see what all people are doing, but I don't see much activity at all that interests me. I do keep in contact with some other old timers from here, which is fantastic!

While I still admire the technology aspect of TWC and work with my STAR hardware, I don't particularly care for the network as it stands today. My family ditched cable back in 2015, and frankly, I am a-okay with not having TWC anymore. Netflix and Hulu FTW

I do miss all the buzz and random discussions we all had back in the day on these forums, though!

Yeah, me too. I still keep in touch with many of you guys that I've known over so many years as well, and I am so grateful for that! :) Those memories of our good times here on the forums and TWC shall never die.

Unless something significant happen, like new look (which happened today) or bad weather coverage, yeah, this forum is dead. 11 years ago, it was a lot more active when the channel has more hours of weather coverage.

I still vividly remember the day TWC lost power back in the mid 2000s. There was a thread on my now defunct message board that had 10 pages of posts the evening it happened. When I checked it out the next morning, it had exploded to 60 pages! I guess you could say that that thread went "viral" before "going viral" was a thing.

That sure can be said. I came here in 2015 and unfortunately not much has changed.

Have our members simply lost interest, moved on to other things or maybe a combination of both?

Either that or loosing the password. (In all seriousness, 2000s era password managers are hot garbage.)

Earlier this decade, 2010-2012, people were still coming here on a regular basis. Others no longer coming on here has made me not want to come on here, and I guess it's like a domino effect. I have a severe weather thread back from the spring of 2011 and it has multiple pages due to the unusually stormy (and tornadic) period from that year.

Earlier THIS YEAR people were posting here.

My old computer bit the dust back in June.  I couldn't find my password until about September, so I wasn't here for a few months.

Before I left, there were AT LEAST 10 posts per day.  When I got back, there were maybe 1 or 2.

WHERE DID EVERYBODY GO?

I’ve thought about this recently, and I guess it’s just that most veteran members have moved on, as things with TWC just aren’t the same anymore (for some) or others just don’t have the time to look over the forums with life getting in the way. There’s also been a rise in instant messaging platforms like Skype, Telegram, Instagram, Discord, etc. I’m not trying to say that forms are now totally obsolete, but messaging platforms have really changed the way most fan groups and communities communicate nowadays.

I wish things could change, but with TWC changing to adapt to the modern age of weather information being easily available on the internet and other messaging platforms like Discord, I don’t think it would be easy to bring people back here.

It’s also pretty sad that the connection between TWC and this fanbase has been totally lost (mostly because there isn’t a fanbase anymore), and I wish there were a way to revive that connection. Again, this is merely wishful thinking and I’m not saying that we could change TWC if that were to happen, but I do think they’d listen better to us if somehow we could regain their attention.

I’ve thought of this place a lot as I started my experience with TWC here, and it’s sad to see it in this state. I miss this place.

Not yet anyway.

I've seen several boards die off.  Forums like this one are going the way of the horse and buggy.

It seems as if forums as a whole are dying off, especially with the advent of things like Reddit.
