That's what they want. They want to make as much money as possible.
Why worry about making money when they can worry about people who can't afford these prices? Another 50 cents and I might not be able to afford to run a car anymore.

Was Hrricane Katrina a reason that the gas prices were high?

The high prices the oil companies pass to us are really only slightly lower than what they had to pay to get it, so it's not like they get it for extremely cheap, and then jack up the costs before it gets to you.

Then how else could you explain the earth shattering, record breaking profits they continue to reel in? That's not possible if they have to pay anything close to what we pay.

Consuming 400 millions of gas a day could have something to do with it :whistling:

Yes but if they are only charging us SLIGHTLY more than they pay, there's no way they'd be able to make such tremendous profits.

Even if the gas companies figured in 1 cent per gallon in profits, at that rate they still would make $146 million in a year.

IOW, if they pay say $2.43 to obtain that oil, and sell it for say $2.50, they would still make $1 billion in a year.

I see what your saying, but I still don't think its the only factor. Especially since it seems that only one oil company is making such huge profits. If they all were making such profits, then that argument would be much more feasible.

You're right, it isn't as cut and dry as I stated.  I never factored in things like production costs, the state of the market, etc.

There may have been one only company who made record profits, but certainly the other companies were certainly getting fat off their oil revenues as well
