Earth Hour 2009
« on: March 25, 2009, 11:54:36 PM »
I know it's about 3 days away, but I am so going to participate along with 50 billion people around the world to turn off the lights for one hour. I've been seeing so much ads about Earth Hour 2009, besides TWC. I wonder if more people would take action this year to just shut off their lights for one hour...
Is anyone going to shut off their lights for Earth Hour this Saturday?

Absolutely not. I honestly find it to be the stupidest thing in the world. That's just my opinion on it, though.

Just another marketing gimick in my opinion. I mean just listen to TWCs ads. "Tune into The Weather Channel durring Earth Hour" Well... if the true purpous was for the Earth I wouldn't advise having a big ole tv turned on.

The only time I cut my lights and computers off, is when I go to sleep. That is 4-7 hours all on its own.

Yeah, no. I'm not going to participate in this. As already said, its just marketing bull. I don't need to turn off the lights for an hour, it will just add on to the time my lights are off during the day and night. Kinda dum, eh?

Exactly. We have plenty of "Earth hours" when we sleep. There's no need for another one when we are awake.

Nah.  Lights are never on in my house anyway.  The only time they are on is when parents are reading news paper in morning, when we take showers.  That's about it.  Otherwise, we watch TV in the dark (and that's usually only a couple hours total for the day).

I really appreciate everyone's opinions here. It's just that in my area many people I know are actually gonna go for it. I'm changing my mind.

If we really want to make a difference for the Earth after pumping so much carbon dioxide into the atmosphere for well over 150 years, it's going to take far more than just one hour per year to change anything.  We should really be focusing on simple environmental lifestyle changes (using less electricity, walking more instead of driving, etc.) that can be done everyday by everyone for years to come.

There are only about 6 billion people on Earth. So how are there 50 billion? Baby boom? :P

I think I'll turn off the lights for a while that day, but not for an hour.

I don't plan on participating in it either. I can live without the lights on for an extra hour, as I usually don't turn the lights on until 11 PM during the summer anyway. But I almost never have my computer off, so it is impossible for me to go completely off my coal powered grid.
