Title: CPU Upgrade... What would you recomend?
Post by: curtjr4 on May 10, 2009, 01:19:19 PM
Hello everyone,

I am in need up a CPU upgrade... badly. I am running on a old AMD Duron. Information is listed below. The socket of this CPU is a Socket 462 (Socket A).

Applebred (Model 8, 130 nm)
L1-Cache: 64 + 64 KiB (Data + Instructions)
L2-Cache: 64 KiB, fullspeed
MMX, Extended MMX, 3DNow!, Extended 3DNow!, SSE
Socket A (EV6)
Front side bus: 133 MHz (266 MT/s)
VCore: 1.50 V
First release: August 21, 2003
Clockrate: 1400, 1600, 1800 MHz

Any upgrade suggestions (And yes, I do know that upgrading on this socket is difficult, as there arn't many CPUs on the market designed for this specific Socket 462).

I don't think that's an answer he was looking for.

If you have ever seen my desktop pictures, it is a PC... not a Mac

There are/have been "PC's" with PowerPC processors. Apple was not the only one to use them.

Is it even worth it to upgrade your CPU? What kinda specs does your computer have?

CPU's don't have multiple speeds Gil. I want him to tell me what the speed of the CPU is.

IMO It's not worth it to just upgrade the CPU, especially on a computer with that socket. You'd need a new mobo with a newer socket for a new processor, probably you'd need newer RAM, by this point it's just better to buy a new PC.

Well clockrate is the term used to measure a processor's speed (how many cycles per second).

Soooo wrong. It's amazing how many people think you need a new computer, when you really don't. Is your computer currently serving you well? Maybe just needs an extra bit of speed? Upgrade the CPU, and save some money. There are only a few situations where you really need to always have the latest greatest computer. And I'll tell you now, being an average user is not one of them.

Thank you for having some sense.

Auctualy, I agree with Gary. Why o people need a new computer because the operating failed, or it is slow? It still does what it needs to do!

The clockrate is 1400. It is super slow... :hammer:

That's 1.4Ghz, which really isn't TOO bad. Duron processors go up to at least 2Ghz, IIRC, so an upgrade of the CPU should be all you need. What do you do with your computer (other, of course, than browse the internet)?

Now I feel offended. I work in computers for a living, I am an IS Specalist and the sole IT person for a multi-million dollar manufacturing company and you're telling me I don't have any sense!!!

What I sad was that the CPU socket is out of date, I'm not sure if the Socket A is made anymore I don't think so, unless he can find a faster CPU for that socket then it's not worth all the money upgrading it.

You also said he'd need newer RAM, which is B.S.

No you didn't read my post correctly.... I said if he couldn't find a faster CPU for that socket he'd have to buy a new motherboard with a new socket for a new processor and most likely a newer motherboard wouldn't use the same kind of RAM as the old one!

There are faster processors out there (as Gary pointed out). He doesn't need a new motherboard.

Exactly my point!!!! I said if he couldn't find a faster one!!

That's not what you said. What you said was that it wasn't worth it for him to upgrade that CPU, and that he'd need a new mobo and new RAM.

I've been building and repairing computers since the days of the 386. If you want to throw qualifications around I can match you every step of the way. I'm surprised that someone in this business has no idea just how easy it is to find any type of CPU you wish to have. There's Ebay, pricewatch.com, and many, many countless other sites that sell socket A CPU's. IMO, if your computer guy is telling you you need a brand new computer (especially if e tells you so without having no idea what you do with your computer), you need a new computer guy.
