If there's any great tech person on the forums that could help me, then it would be greatly appreciated...

So over the Christmas break, I bought a new ASUS 15.6" touch-screen laptop with 8GB memory and 750GB hard drive.  If you read the "Slow and lagging" thread in the Site News,  you may have noticed that I complained about a typing lag.  Well, this is a problem that really annoys me and greatly upsets me on a computer with this much memory.  (My old HP computer with only 4 GB of memory did not have this problem.)  The lag seems to happen on programs such as Word, or when I'm typing e-mails on Outlook.  It will happen every 30 seconds to one-minute.  Strangely enough, the typing problems I had on the forums was a first-time, and at this point, one-time occurrence.

Anyway, Zach, taking heed to your advice, I opened the task manager and see that I have 81 background processes running.  Is that a lot?  I don't even know what half of them are but don't want to turn some off in case they are subtle programs that I need.

Bottom line is: If someone could help me either figure out what background programs I can turn off, or figure out another way to stop this horrible typing lag, then I would greatly appreciate it. :thumbsup:

That's a lot of processes, Andy.  I only have 49 running on mine, including having a web browser open to reply to you.  I would start looking at what exactly the processes are and consider disabling some unnecessary programs and services.  You may want to do some updates on any of the programs and drivers that you do want to keep to see if it helps.  Look online for ways to speed up Windows 7, too.  I'm sure more members can give you better details, but I'll let this advice be a starting point for you.

I have 102 processes on mine and no issues either. What CPU and GPU does your lappy have? I'd imagine those touch screen laptops aren't as powerful as traditional notebooks.

If I can answer your questions without looking stupid, my CPU says it's Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3632QM CPU @ 2.20 GHz.

And I know I have Intel(R) Graphics.

I've got Kaspersky Anti-Virus installed.  I also have Malwarebytes Anti-malware, and SUPER Anti-Spyware installed.  My parents talked to GeekSquad (I think) and they recommended the malwarebytes and super anti-spyware for maximum security.  (If you think they could be causing the problem, however, I could try removing them.)

You pay for what you get, really. That's how it has gone for me, at least. I bought a HP dvd1270 and it works perfectly well for me. Very fast, burns discs properly, etc. Usually Toshiba drives have failed on me, but I've always had great luck with Lite-On and HP. Oh, and another warning from personal experience... if you go used, do not get a Matshita/Panasonic. They have all failed on me so far.

As for the quality aspect, I am fairly sure most of them will have a plastic face plate. I don't see any other substitute. The metals aren't the strongest, but if you don't drop the drive or put a ton of pressure on the thing, it should be fine. My main concern would be about the optical lens and the gears. That varies model from model, so just do some research before you buy to see what people have to say about the quality.

I have an AMD Radeon HD7450.  I've downloaded the latest package for this and it's installed on my PC, but none of the drivers have been updated.  There still in 32 bit and not 64.  Do I need to uninstall the old ones first and then re-install?
