Chilean Mine Rescue
« on: October 13, 2010, 10:52:47 AM »
Has anyone been following the miner's rescue in Chile? I think it's the most amazing rescue in my 19 1/2 years of life. So far, 14 miners have been rescued since around 7:30 or 8 my time iirc. The fifteenth miner is about to be rescued by the time of this topic's creation.

All miners rescued were reunited with their family members, and received immediate medical attention from on-site doctors.

I'm so happy for the miners and their families. I can't even fathom being in a dark mine for two months. I bet they've grown a lot as people after this experience--realizing the importance of love, family, and friends. I've been watching the coverage on TWC and the news all day. One thing that looks so unpleasant is that tiny cage they have to ride in to get out (I'm pretty claustrophobic), but  the ultimate result of putting up with the claustrophobia is definitely worthwhile.

I'm afraid of tight spaces also. The 17th miner was just rescued.

They should just be glad they're getting out alive!

They need to be very thankful.  Not too long ago on April 6 of this year, 25 miners in WV didn't come out alive during a mine explosion.  It should really tell you all how dangerous mining can be, but it's a way of life for some people.

You just refreshed our memories. I didn't remember that until you said. Thanks Patrick.

P.S. The 23rd miner was just rescued. That's 10 to go!

Also, my ELA teacher has been keeping us well informed on the rescue. He said a few weeks ago that they might not be rescued until Thanksgiving.  That certainly has changed.

A similiar event in WV also happened in January of 2006 when 12 out of 13 miners died in a mine explosion. The lone survivor happened to be the youngest miner too. Maybe age played a role for the survival of the Chilean miners too?

I doubt it, it must have just been a coincidence. One of the miners (the eldest) in the Chilean mine is 62.

To give an update: The 27th miner is being rescued at this moment. So far 27 miners have been rescued, and 6 miners are still underground. We're almost there.
