I've just recently got an idea to contribute an idea to these forums, and I'd like to propose it now.
On Livestream, I've just created an account intended to be just like the Weather Channel. EDIT: This stream is currently being used for my school forecasting office, but since it will often be used to observe and forecast on a national scale, this stream could be used by TWCToday members as well.
If you're interested, I'm running a test show tomorrow at 5:15 PM EST. It will cover the predicted severe weather outbreak in Arkansas and Tennessee. I'd like to invite you to check it out, if you can! The video will be archived on the site as well, if you can't make it.
Here's the link:
www.livestream.com/thewxnetwork (http://www.livestream.com/thewxnetwork)
What do you guys think? Would a live show be a good addition to the site?
-
can't say if this is a good idea or not... we had copyright problems when we were streaming TWC in 2009. but I don't know whether or not TWN would have a problem with it (they probably will)
-
Oooh...okay. On that note, let's cancel that one show until we can get that copyright information cleared up.
-
It would be great if it were in at least 720p HD. I like the idea!

You realize that streaming video 720p takes up a lot of bandwidth? Most people don't want to be wasting their precious bandwidth for streaming something in 720p when a 240p-480p broadcast is perfectly sufficient. You should be lucky that there is even a stream of this at all (even though it appears to be down at the moment).

Oh, I forgot about that. 480p would be best though. Why am I lucky? All of the information/graphics that are presented on their I can easily access on the internet.

I think I'm just going to modify the stream to cover severe weather events, with audio updates when necessary.

If you'd like I could make some graphics and send to you such as thunderstorm forecast's when its necessary.

Only if its okay with you. Thanks for the offer!

It is. I like to help people so I just asked. Let me know when you need them.
-
I'm planning to modify it quite a bit tomorrow, so if you could send me an e-mail with the stuff sometime in the next two days, that would be appreciated. Send whatever you need. If my e-mail isn't visible, just PM me and I'll give it to you.
Again, thanks for the offer.
-
Will do, I'll make a graphics package for the severe event sunday-monday.
-
Just got the graphics, VERY well done. Thanks so much.
-
Your Welcome.
-
Stream will be looping Donovan's presentation for the majority of tonight and into tomorrow morning. Show starts at 11:30 PM EST.
-
I apologize for the double post, but the Ustream link will become unreliable in about 12 hours. I'm testing out Livestream, which gives me a lot more options to work with.
-
Did you get your live stream up yet? :)
-
That I did. It's running right now on the first post, in fact. I changed over to Livestream because it had better quality.
-
My stream will be operational from 8:00 AM to around 5:00 PM EST today, tracking severe weather.
-
TRIPLE POST: Argh!
Stream will be running from 7:30 onwards, conveying storm reports and continuing monitoring watches. Regular streaming will resume tomorrow morning.
-
Yet another update. Stream is back online, with a new format! Oh, and the March 2011 playlist will be on!
EDIT: Forgot to give credit. Thanks to LocalOnThe8 for putting the soundtrack videos on Youtube. The music you are hearing is directly off her channel.
-
I see that you are using my content, which for you I'm completely fine with.
When any of you use my content in a live streaming environment, notify me before doing so! Thanks
-
Oh yeah, forgot to mention the titlebars. Yeah, titlebars belong to Donovan. Just in case you didn't figure it out. :whistling:

By the way, nice animation done on them!
-
Oh, yeah. It was a pain to pull it off, though, because I had to thoroughly analyze a video of the Intellistar 2 to try and match it perfectly. A full hour and a half of my day, gone. But at least I got it done.
-
New icons up. Thanks to texasstooge for letting me use them. And yes, the U.S. map and the titlebars belong to Donovan.
-
Due to a rather large severe weather threat tomorrow, the TWCToday Stream will be active, starting at 10:00 AM EDT.
-
Stream up for a all-nighter. Note that information will not be updated. U.S. map and title bars are Donovans. Thunder forecast was made by me and does not completely reflect the forecast of The Weather Channel.
EDIT: :censored: My home internet can't handle the stream! Curses, guys, but it'll have to be cancelled until Monday.
-
Stream is up, from now until around 5:00 PM EDT.
-
Donovan was originally supposed to stream at 5:00 PM, but he can't. So, the Severe Weather Central Show is going extended until around midnight tonight.
-

Okay, guys, we want your help. Got any videos or pictures of weather in action, or LOT8 videos you want to show off? We'd like to use it in our stream! If you want your videos and photos on the stream, simply post them here. We'll show them as soon as we can.
-
We're working to make the stream much more interesting, so we need pictures and videos. Thanks!
-
Well, it was five hours of complete torture, but the stream officially had its first all-day broadcast, and we managed to be patient enough to see the start of a relatively small severe weather event. We'll be doing it again today. A little note, though: Severe Weather Center is postponed until further notice. Our next show will be at 2 PM EDT, with Weather Center.
-
We are holding an emergency stream in response to the severe weather outbreak occurring in Alabama and Georgia. We encourage you to visit, as we have real-time tornado detection and warning updates.
-
I am glad to announce, we have now added a next day forecast for all regions of the country to our graphics line up. Watch to see it Weeknights 4PM-12AM
-
Due to the mounting severe weather threat across the Eastern United States today and tomorrow, all regular streaming will be suspended for updated severe weather tracking. We'll be on tonight until around 12:30 AM, and on starting 7:00 AM tomorrow and closing up shop around 12:30 AM.
We have live radar with real-time severe warning updates. As for as we know, there is no place that gets warning information to you faster.

I can tell you, TWC is not as reliable due to commercial breaks and OCM's that do not pay much attention. WATCH US WHEN SEVERE WEATHER STRIKES, and enjoy a great tune while doing so!
-
The severe outbreak has now begun. We are tracking severe weather live until around 1 AM tonight.

I don't think we ever gave you guys a website that this stream was based out of. We do have our own website, with our own forecasts (heavily based on NWS forecasts). We update it several times a day, and try to add new things to it about once a week. We'd love some feedback on it from you guys!
Here is the site:

We also just rolled out what we call "Precision Forecast", which is a one day outlook that is used to get accurate details into a map view. Its in the early phase and based on NWS forecasts with out interpretation. We'll see how well this system works in the coming days. Feedback should only be constructive to our efforts.
EDIT: Below is our forecast.

We now have a facebook page. Just created, Like it and you'll get weather updates like MD's, Watches, Warnings, and important information. http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Weather-Center/101721113254983 (http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Weather-Center/101721113254983)

After a long hiatus, we are back on the air. You can watch the stream from the widget in the first post of the thread. Featuring a national forecast, and streaming radar with warning audio when necessary.

Double post, and I need some input on this. We're remodeling our website, and we have several new features. We're opening several specialty offices for the tropics, severe weather, and hydrology. In addition, we're going to form several local offices. We already have three: Charleston, Grand Forks, and Chattanooga.
Here's the thing: we don't want to be the only ones operating the site. We'd like to have other people interested in weather helping operating the specialty offices. If someone wants to open a local office, they can do so at no cost. So, please reply to this if you're interested. The site is still in the works, but we'll release it by mid-September.

This also will be good practice for those who want to go into the meteorology field testing your skills at forecasting... We both have several fans on Facebook that even after termination still come to us for weather information and we feel like we just left them hanging... So we're going to continue this service and would love to get to know you all and work together to forecast to our best abilities. We also need graphical outlooks done, so anyone with those talents are needed as well as those who can write text based outlooks... Some being technical. Thanks! Join us?
-
A big thanks to those of you who have considered working with us. For you folks who agreed to join us, welcome aboard. For you still considering, please take your time.
The Weather Center will now start regular operations today. Our goal is to provide opportunities to practice forecasting for weather enthusiasts, whether they are enrolled in a college program, or are still in middle or high school. We have several offices you can elect to join and assist with, and more may be opened as the weeks progress. Below is the list of offices we have running:
- Hydrology and Winter Weather Office: Forecasts total rainfall and assesses the risk of flash flooding. During the fall and winter months, forecasts total snowfall and issues statements on blizzards or other winter storms.
- Severe Weather Office: Makes daily forecasts for severe weather potential, assigns risk areas as necessary, and may issue "watches" in close coordination with the National Weather Service.
- Tropical Weather Office: Tracks tropical systems, issues advisories and discussions as necessary.
We also have four local offices operating, based out of Chattanooga, TN; Charleston, SC; Grand Forks, ND; and Cleveland, OH. You are more than welcome to open a local office with us. Just let us know, and we'll have your page set up within the hour.
Here is our website link. Feel free to check us out!

Hi guys, we've posted here before about forecasting for our organization and have had very few to respond. Forecaster might not have been the term needed to describe every job we need, and one of those not listed was graphics producer. I need one if not several slots filled in the Graphics department and if you have time to devote to us, please contact me on this forum via Private messaging or you may email me. In addition, we do need forecasters for our various offices, anyone with time and meteorological knowledge may work with us. Please, if you have any questions, get with me and I'll see that they are answered. Thanks, Don.

For anyone interested in the weather for our friends to the north, The Weather Center will be opening up a Canadian weather office, covering all provinces. A link to the page will be provided shortly.
-
Double post. A few more local offices are in the works here. Our Seattle office is now operational, and a Concord Massachusetts office may also be in the works. We'll release links as we can.
-
In an effort to preserve office coordination, we have split the country into various regions, with certain offices acting as headquarters for each reason. It's almost identical to the Regional Headquarters of the NWS.
Attached is a map of the regions. The list of open offices and the head offices of each region are listed below.
New England Region
No offices open at this time.
Head Office: New York, NY
Southern Region
Atlanta, GA
Charleston, SC
Head Office: Dallas, TX
Midwest Region
Grand Forks, ND
Head Office: Chicago, IL
Western Region
Seattle, WA
Head Office: Denver, CO

Hey folks. Just wanted to show off a small vid that we recorded just a few minutes ago with test material for our stream. Complete with a fully functional lower-thirds bar. A few minor city display errors near the end, along with a small bit of lag between cities, but otherwise it looks good. Market data is reserved for slow days. What do you guys think?
