Welcome to Round 1 of the TWCT/TWCC Forecasting Contest! Your first city is Casper, WY. The NWS daily climate summary for the ASOS at the airport just northwest of this city (METAR ID: KCPR) will be the official verification. You may use anything to make your forecasts, but please make it your own effort. Your Day 1 forecast of the high and low temperatures, the probability of precipitation, and the precipitation amount for Monday, May 6 is due at 12:00:00 AM EDT tonight. Those who are not in Eastern Time must adjust accordingly. We will proceed in this topic until all ten forecasting days are completed and a winner is crowned.
If any issues arise with either the forecasts or the verification, please let Andy and I know so that we may fix them. We will not penalize participants if missing observations occur that cannot be resolved. Also, we will update the scoring as it progresses, but I will sit out this round to make sure everything runs smoothly. Please read the rules at this link, because it will be assumed that you understand them completely when you make your first forecast:
https://twctodayforums.com/forums/forecasting/twcttwcc-forecasting-contest-rules-4808/ (https://twctodayforums.com/forums/forecasting/twcttwcc-forecasting-contest-rules-4808/)
Good luck, everyone! B)

Trevor, I hope you meant May 6 on your forecast and that it's just a typo. I don't want you forecasting the wrong day. :P
Craig, you can always delete your post and make a new one before midnight if you want to change anything. I'm not going to put any forecasts into the spreadsheet until it's past the deadline.

REGION BEGINNING TO COME UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF A CUT-OFF LOW CENTERED OVER THE CENTRAL COAST OF CALIFORNIA. NAM AND UKMET ARE NOT HANDLING THIS SYSTEM WELL...KEEPING A SHORTWAVE TROUGH MOVING AROUND THE BOTTOM OF THE LOW WEAK. GFS AND ECMWF CONTINUE TO HANDLE THE SYSTEM WELL SO WILL RELY MORE HEAVILY ON THESE. THUS...USED ECMWF AND SOME GFS H7/H8 TEMP GUIDANCE AND PRECIP.

Day 4 is finished, and the last day of the first week is here. I made a few tweaks to the contest rules, but nothing will affect the scoring process already in place. I clarified how trace amounts of precipitation are scored, how missing data is handled, and how the verification process works such as where you're forecasting and what is used. You're welcome to ask any questions if needed. ;)
It rained for ten minutes on Day 3, but only a trace of precipitation fell. Thus, it counts as no precipitation according to the rules.

The first week of forecasting is over. I hope you all think this idea is going well, and I will gladly take comments or suggestions for improvement during this little break. You won't have to forecast again until Sunday evening when you will start on Day 6 for Monday, May 13.
Rain was observed again at the airport, but it still only registered a trace of precipitation for Day 4. Mac and Trevor have been assigned a penalty for missing their forecasts.

Mac and Trevor, thanks for at least trying. Hope you both can rejoin during the next round. I also hope there will be more participation once all the school exams finish. So, I'll simply show the four remaining contestants in future scores for Casper, WY.
You four were lucky as rain was briefly observed again at the airport, but only a trace of precipitation fell. I hope you realize that this site does get precipitation as it had 4.7" of snow from a storm on April 30 and May 1. I hope you four feel this contest is going well, and I will take any suggestions to help make it better in future rounds. The leaderboard halfway through this first round is given in the attachment, which shows Craig with the lead by 11.4 error points. Next week, the tiebreaker comes into play, so good luck to all four of you!

It's funny you bring up the precipitation. The times anybody tried to forecast any, there turned out not to be any measurable amount. So, it's easy to just get into the mode of never forecasting any, rather than get busted for it on every forecast.
If there's anything I've picked up on from the first week, it's that this is a lot harder than it looks on TV. I guess you can probably tell by now that I'm not a real forecaster (and I don't even play one on TV).
-
That Friday forecast is the best forecast I've had all week. I was only a degree off (high/low) for a perfect prediction. Too bad I got thrown under the bus on the other days though.
-
Your Day 6 forecast for Monday, May 13 is due at midnight tonight. I didn't receive any feedback about the scoring and rules, so I hope all of you are happy and feel that no changes are needed going forward.

During the last two days, you all have been trying to forecast what ended up as record highs at Casper. Everyone has finished this round of forecasting. Thanks for your participation! I don't know why all of you continue to put a 0% chance of precipitation when showers have been around for the past couple days. More rain arrived late in Day 9, but it only measured a trace. However, 0.08" of rain has fallen in Day 10, which means everyone has already busted again for the final day.
If I can make a suggestion for you four in future rounds, you shouldn't put 0% chance POPs when there's any remote chance of a pop-up shower or thunderstorm, especially in the mountains where orographic lifting can easily trigger them. It's much better to put low non-zero POPs as that strategy will always score better over the long run than just 0% all the time, and it's also far more realistic as a forecast. Were you all really 100% confident that it would not rain? I would have had 20-30% POPs these last few days if playing this round, which would have made a huge difference. I'm sorry if it sounds like I'm upset, but I'm really trying to help you see how to forecast and score better. Here are the Day 9 results:

Congratulations to Craig as he is the winner of the Casper, WY round! He will be picking the next city, and I will put up a new topic when we are ready to start Round 2 of this contest. Craig, please PM me with your choice that is not in the Mountain Time Zone as I started this contest there, and you are welcome to ask me for any help.
