My opinion is that the Perry , Lecompton, Kansas unit had the most degradation.

Corrent me if I'm wrong, but hasn't that one been fixed?

Yes I know that unit was fixed. I was just mentioning my opinion about how it looked before it was fixed.

That's impressive! That unit could've fallen apart at any minute. I was glad they fixed it instead of upgrading it to an Intellistar.

Me too. I'd take a Weatherstar 4000 or a Weatherstar XL over an Intellistar anyday.

Hey, add me to the list! EVen though both are far less advanced than the Intellistar, the information that the 4000 and the XL can provide are enough for me

I agree. I really wish that Toledo, Ohio (Buckeye Cablesystem) Still used the 4000. I really see no need for an Intellistar in Toledo.

i regret taping over the 4000 videos i recorded =/

I think this one now holds the record for the most degraded STAR ever.

Is that 4000 running the old type of LDL from the 90s with the text? :o
-
That's a sign that there's a sensor hooked up to the 4000.
-
I find it amazing that unit still uses a local sensor package at the headend. That hasn't been around since TWC's beginning in the early 80's, and I thought the concept went completely 'extinct', but apparently not.
-
Could that degradation be caused by a large amount of dirt and dust that could have built up inside the unit over time?

Well if that is the problem they should just open up the unit and use a hose vac to suck all the dirt and dust out of the unit.

I misread what you stated, but it's not really dirt, but rather just bit-rot that just builds up in the unit from continual use and age.
-
Here is another one. This one coming from Carrington, North Dakota.

If I had to make a guess, the first thing I'd check for are bulging/leaking capacitors. Sometimes the electrolyte inside a capacitor goes bad and tries to push its way upward and eventually starts leaking through the top.
At work, I replaced two video cards not too long ago in some high end Dell's whose capacitors did exactly that.
Just a theory anyway as I've never had the opportunity to see a Star 4000 up close.
