Title: TWC Being Bought By Comedian and Mogul Byron Allen
Post by: texasstooge on March 22, 2018, 09:25:42 PM
Some of you may have heard of comedian and mogul Byron Allen and his Entertainment Studios company, some of you haven't. Today, Allen has announced his intent to purchase The Weather Channel.

At least the channel itself will soon be off the hands of the NBCUniversal/Blackstone/Bain consortium. Will we see some improvements like the return of live 24/7 weather?

Do not be surprised if this leads TWC to go from a cable distribution to a digital subchannel.

Highly doubtful. Also the sale has already been finalized; it's no longer NBC's. I can't see there being a whole lot of changes in the interim, although it's interesting they note they want to incorporate more live programming. We'll have to see.

I wonder how this will affect the coverage of global warming?  When it was NBC alone, they were really in-your-face about it.  After all, General Electric (parent company of NBC) is HEAVILY invested in so-called "green" energy, so it only makes sense that they'd use the outlet to indirectly promote their products.  The news division of NBC was always more than happy to comply for political reasons.

God, how many times has someone wanted to buy TWC in the last two years? This seems to be getting repetitive. I wonder if this one will actually go through unlike the ones in the past.

Not sure how related it is to the purchase, but the info is pertinent:

Yeah, feels unlikely. Still, big shift. Makes you wonder what else might be coming down the pipeline.

When the buyout was announced, they officially took ownership. So for all practical purposes, the change is happening as a result of that.

Unless of course this was a decision made by the previous management that they just decided to continue implementation of.

Since TWC is no longer partly owned by NBCUniversal, I wonder who they go to for local stories and reporters now?  Obviously in the past, we'd always see stories, video footage, feeds, etc. solely from NBC stations.  I'm just curious how this works now that it doesn't just have to be NBC.

that's a good question, i bet NBC put a stip in the buyout contract where NBC stations in markets where NBC owns the stations will still bring content to The Weather Channel unless they make a agreement with other companies.

that means if a big weather story happens in the DFW area, TWC would have to get footage from KDFW Fox 4 (owned by Fox), WFAA  News 8 (local ABC station that's owned by TEGNA), or KTVT CBS 11 (owned by CBS) or KDAF CW 33 once Sinclair Broadcasting completes the merger with Tribune Media and launches a true news team for KDAF unless KXAS NBC 5 which is NBC owned still has a deal to provide DFW weather coverage for TWC.

As I'm watching severe weather coverage, it looks like they're still utilizing sky cam footage from DFW area KXAS NBC 5.

I notice that NBC reporters are still appearing on TWC, despite the fact that they sold it (Thank God!) in 2018.

Is it because of this: "As part of the 2016 spin-off, the Bain/Blackstone/NBCUniversal consortium entered into a long-term licensing agreement with IBM for use of its weather data and "The Weather Channel" name & brand"?

I feel like this ended up being the best thing for the channel in retrospect. It's not any better, but it's not any worse. We haven't had any major layoffs since Kim and Vivian 8 years ago. The biggest departures since then were because of either outside circumstances (Dave Schwartz passing away) or because of voluntary departures (Dr. Greg Forbes retiring). Kelly Cass was also able to get her full time position back and is still in a full time position 7 years later.

Mike Bettes and Stephanie Abrams will be hitting 20 years on the channel this year, and Jen Carfagno is also in the 20+ club and going strong. Chris Warren is also in the double digits and Alex Wilson will be at that channel for a full decade as well. I think even Reynolds Wolff has hit a decade with the network. Jim Cantore recently did an interview on a podcast and he says that he has at least 4 years left in him (he wants to hit 40 years on the network) before he might potentially retire or do other things. Not to mention we still have Carl Parker and Paul Goodloe who are also over 20+ years. and for some reason they have even been able to keep Ray Stagich as a freelancer for 20 years now essentially.

All I'm saying is, the channel seems more stable than it was before.
