Title: New weather.com design: April 2012
Post by: WeatherWitness on April 28, 2012, 07:25:04 PM
Well guys, weather.com has changed again.   It amazes me how they now feel they have to change the design every year.

But this is a HUGE change!!! :o  Everything looks different now...even the local weather pages!  I don't like it; everything looks too cluttered.  What do you guys think?

While the background does look nice, there's just too much stuff on one page. They should have put news headlines in a news section and not clutter the local weather page imo...

I have no idea what change is being discussed here. I didn't see anything different when I went on a there a few minutes ago.

No change on my end either. Do you have a screenshot, Andy?

Here's screenshots I took. I don't use weather.com ever so idk if its new or not. 1st one is from the very top second one is from the very bottom.

Travis, that's not the new design. ;)

I don't know why I'm always the first to see these new designs.  Trust me, I'm not joking.  I am going to provide several screenshots in just a few minutes.  It looks like this must still be in beta test mode, and for me, it is also only showing on IE.

EDIT: Alright, I've provided the screenshots.  The first two show the top and bottom half of the homepage.  The next two show the top and bottom half of the local page.  The third shows only the top half of the 10-Day on the local page.  There are certainly a great deal of changes, and it's difficult to show you everything from a screenshot point-of-view.  But hopefully you get the idea what may be rolling in the next few days or so.

ANOTHER EDIT: As you can see, this is certaily a very Facebook/Twitter-friendly site now.  Also, the "Make it Your Weather" you see on the last screenshot in place of the weather.com logo means that you can essentially change the logo to say something like "Andy's weather."

I'm still not seeing this, even after my cache is cleared

Try typing in "preview.weather.com" (obviously without the quotes :) )

It's ok, it would take some getting used to.  :itsok:

I find it ironic that the new website design is being advertised in an article on one of the the screenshots, but yet I don't see that article and I still don't see this site redesign in either Chrome or IE9!  :P

EDIT: Now I see it thanks to that preview trick from Matt.

Yeah, a bit cluttered for my tastes. Not like it matters for me; NWS is the only site I've been going to for weather information since about a year ago.

Even with the preview URL, I don't see much difference. The only noticeable change is the local weather page. Not a fan. I liked the tabs at the top much better. Now I have to scroll down to get the 5 and 10 day forecasts. Things also seem to be randomly placed. Kind of hard to find what you're looking for. And what's the Facebook thing (love/ugh) about? The last thing I need in my feed is a bunch of useless posts about the weather.

A video was made about it, I don't suppose it's aired?

http://preview.weather.com/services/tutorial-redesign/overview.html (http://preview.weather.com/services/tutorial-redesign/overview.html)

anyway, it's kinda nice I like it, especially the changing background that corresponds to the weather.

Though I don't have it yet, I have no quarrels with what I see or what the video mentions. Chalk this one up to "evolutionary" website changes, and not "revolutionary" new design.

Looks like the new weather.com is launching on May 2, the same day as the 30th Anniversary of TWC.

There is currently a live chat on weather.com to discuss the new layout.  It says discuss the "sneak preview" though, so does this mean the site is not permanent yet?  From the looks of the posts on the chat, a lot of users do not like the "vertical" layout of the Hourly, 5-Day, and 10-Day forecasts (which I can't blame them for).  I, as well as a few others, also miss the "Right Now" page having the current conditions AND the 36-hour forecast.  According to TWC, supposedly they are working on a new design for the 10-Day that will bring back the horizontal view.

Oh, and one more thing, why does TWC ALWAYS neglect to re-design the "Monthly" page???  I mean, I guess it's alright that they don't, but I can't even begin to tell you how old that design is.

I noticed on the left side when you click on the today tab they have that TruPoint forecast  letting you know how the weather will be over a period of about 6 hours. Right now for my area it says occasional thunderstorms expected around 11:00am. I don't believe that, but I'll test it to see how "accurate" it'll be.

So it could be a browser issue for me (though I have tried viewing on several), but I have noticed that within the past week or so the weather backgrounds indicating the current condition on a city's "Right Now" page have vanished.  Has anyone else noticed this?  If so, that's really too bad, especially considering this is one thing they "bragged" about on releasing the new site.  Maybe too many people complained that they were distracting.

They were there for me earlier last week... did they remove them?

EDIT: Andy your right... they are gone!

It would appear a new grey-black color scheme has been thrown in the mix for inclement evening weather. Unless, of course, I just never saw this one when it debuted  :bleh:

Apparently, TWC provides a separate forecast for national holidays that are within the 10 day forecasting range. Right under 10 Day, 4th of July is displayed.

Hmmm...that is interesting; thanks for pointing that out, Tavores!  Since TWC seems to be real concerned with all this "planning your weather" stuff, it makes sense that they would include something like this.  Of course, now that I notice it's the same thing as me clicking on "Details" on the 10-Day for July 4, what's the point?  I guess it does have a countdown and some holiday-related ads, of course.

weather.com has slightly updated their "Today" page for local cities.  Though a minor change, it may take some time getting used to.  I think the format is kind of what they used to have,  though, with the columns like that.

It's been six days since the DST switch, but the "Weather in Motion" maps are still on Standard Time
